Tuesday, November 10, 2009 8:00 am – 10:00 am Facilitation Skills Jey Wagner Dale Carnegie of Greater Los Angeles and Ventura County The secret to a successful meeting is to “try honestly see things from the other person’s point of view.” Leaders bring people, ideas and productivity together through providing needs and expectations and creating a riskfree environment. Guidelines for facilitation effectiveness will be discussed in this interactive session. The essential elements that need to be incorporated before, during and after any session will be discussed to improve quality, outcome and follow-up. The ultimate goal is to build cooperation and trust. • Preparation skills • Identify necessary skills/objectives for a “productive” session • Learn strategies for running an effective dialogue • Dealing with assertive/aggressive/passive behaviors • Use communications cushions to “soften the blow” from difficult participants • Conduct a group question and answer session • Discuss the 10 tips for productivity • Discuss the 10 tips for presenting and responding to participants • “Prime the pump” in getting an audience to participate either in questions, participating or focusing • Tips on running an effective meeting or roundtable discussion • Learn a quick 4-step process for running a meeting • Determine some decision making criteria for ending a meeting on a proactive note • Discuss green-light vs. red-light thinking The complexity of facilitation skills is generally in the mind of the leader. Once those paradigms are broken and the leader has a plan, can incorporate their own personality, eliminate personal agendas and incorporate the ideas listed above, a meeting can virtually run itself with the leader simply moving the elements along at the right pace!
