Honorary Fellowship<br />

Honorary Fellowship is a means to<br />

bestow Fellowship on deserving nondentists.<br />

This status is awarded to<br />

individuals who would o<strong>the</strong>rwise be<br />

candidates for Fellowship by virtue <strong>of</strong><br />

demonstrated leadership and achievements<br />

in dentistry or <strong>the</strong> community<br />

except that <strong>the</strong>y are not dentists. Honorary<br />

Fellows have all <strong>the</strong> rights and privileges<br />

<strong>of</strong> Fellowship except <strong>the</strong>y cannot vote or<br />

hold elected <strong>of</strong>fice. This year <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

four recipients <strong>of</strong> Honorary Fellowship.<br />

Dr. Laura J. Bishop is <strong>the</strong><br />

Academic Program Officer<br />

for International, Library<br />

and Outreach Initiatives <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Kennedy Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Ethics and its Bioethics Research Library<br />

at Georgetown University. The Bioethics<br />

Research Library is <strong>the</strong> national reference<br />

library for ethics and <strong>the</strong> epicenter <strong>of</strong><br />

ethics resources <strong>of</strong> all types. Dr. Bishop<br />

is an active member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>American</strong><br />

Society for Dental Ethics Section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>. She has been invaluable in cooperative<br />

efforts involving <strong>the</strong> Ethics Resource<br />

Dr. John D.B. Fea<strong>the</strong>rstone<br />

has served as <strong>the</strong> Dean,<br />

University <strong>of</strong> California,<br />

San Francisco, School <strong>of</strong><br />

Dentistry since 2008. It is<br />

unusual for a dental school to have a dean<br />

who is not a dentist. Dr. Fea<strong>the</strong>rstone is<br />

a scientist with a broad background <strong>of</strong><br />

leadership and accomplishment. He is<br />

leading <strong>the</strong> effort to change <strong>the</strong> standard<br />

<strong>of</strong> care for dental practitioners. It is<br />

expected his research will markedly<br />

change <strong>the</strong> teaching and practice <strong>of</strong><br />

caries management. Dr. Fea<strong>the</strong>rstone’s<br />
