The College commissioned the creation of a public
relations video last fall, primarily to tell who we are
and what we do. The video is now complete and can be
viewed at www.acd.org. Sections were each sent a DVD
of the video. The video was produced by Ivey Productions
in Dallas. Fellows will also have a chance to see the
video in Las Vegas as it will be demonstrated at a special
ACDNEWS
The Board of Regents is exploring an integration-type
relationship with the International Dental Ethics and
Law Society (IDEALS) similar to the integration recently
completed with the American Society for Dental Ethics
(ASDE). IDEALS is largely, but not exclusively, concentrated
in Europe. IDEALS was founded in 1999 when
a number of experts in the fi eld of dental ethics and
law decided to explore the feasibility of creating a new
The ACD and ICD are planning a joint C.E. conference
on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, 2012 (Thursday
and Sunday are travel days). This will be similar to
previous ACD Summer Conferences with C.E., fun, and
fellowship. The
conference will
be at the beautiful
Westin Savannah
Harbor Golf Resort
& Spa. Details are
being fi nalized and
will be available
in Las Vegas if not
sooner. The meeting
is believed to be the fi rst national-level collaborative
activity with the ICD.
tober 10, 2011, in Las Vegas. To date, 24 Sections and 22
individuals have contributed to the project. The $1,000
donation of the Maryland Section to the video was
inadvertently omitted from our list of donors in our last
issue. We are most appreciative of Maryland Section’s
support.
An Orientation Video that covers different material in a
different format can be viewed using a link at www.acd.
org located just below the ACD Video. The Orientation
Video should also be useful to Sections, Fellows, and the
general public in learning more about the College.
2 August 2011
President’s Forum
This spring has been a busy time for your
President. In March my wife and I traveled
to Memphis, Tennessee, where we were
hosted by Regent Carl Sibelius and his
wife, Judy. Carl kindly took us on a tour of
Memphis and we even managed to have
Thomas F. Winkler III
him take us to Graceland for his fi rst visit,
as well as ours! My wife especially enjoyed
having dinner with a colleague she knew in the 1970s, Dr. Herb
Butts, a past Editor of the Journal of the American Dental Association.
In early April I attended the ACD Board Meeting in Annapolis.
I was pleased to meet Dr. Michael Meru, who is a recent dental
graduate and the fi rst Regent Intern on the Board. Mike is organizing
the SPEC groups (Student Professionalism and Ethics Club)
into a national organization with the support of ACD (now Student
Professionalism and Ethics Association). This is an important part of
ACD’s future. At this meeting we also made fi nal plans for our joint
ACD-ICD C.E. Conference in Savannah, Georgia, in March 2012.
I next traveled to the Indiana Section meeting in Indianapolis. I
was hosted by Regent Bob Wanker and ASDE Liaison Dr. Larry
Garetto, who teaches ethics at Indiana.
In early June my wife and I attended the “black tie” dinner in
Montreal, Canada, sponsored by the Quebec Section. We were
hosted along with our Regent Tom Connolly by past Regent Herb
Borsuk and his wife, Eileen. We all enjoyed a day with Herb and
his wife traveling to the Laurentians.
Our most recent trip was to the Washington Section meeting in
Seattle hosted by Regent Terry Grubb. At the dinner we enjoyed
seeing Past Presidents Charles Farrell and Marcia Boyd. We had
a little rivalry with Marcia that evening since it was the seventh
game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs between our Boston Bruins and
her Vancouver Canucks. We celebrated as our Bruins prevailed,
much to Marcia’s chagrin.
My wife, Barbara has been active in the ACD New England
Section since 1991. We have had an incredible professional and
personal experience through our involvement with ACD over
two decades, the culmination of which has been this year as your
President. Wherever we went we were treated with kindness,
generosity, and hospitality. I was especially impressed by the
Sections’ enthusiasm and individual efforts of participation.
I am looking forward to our Annual Meeting and Convocation
on October 10 th and 11 th in Las Vegas. We have excellent speakers
David W. Chambers conducted a focus group on the
“Practice Ethics Assessment and Development” prototype
of the Professional Ethics Initiative. The program
allowed dentists to assess the ethical climates of their
practices; a signifi cant pre-meeting commitment was
required, this program offered 17 hours of C.E. credit.
In the afternoon, Al Walker gave an informative and
humorous presentation, “Gateway to Excellence.” The
Fellows Forum followed, where the Interactive Dental
Ethics Application (IDEA®) was demonstrated by Dr.
Stephen Ralls, who gave a general overview, and Dr.
David Chambers, who discussed a specifi c case-study
due to another commitment.
Projects and Initiatives Summary—The ACD has
been busy working on a number of important projects
and initiatives—many of which are updated herein—
including the Professional Ethics Initiative, the Interactive
Dental Ethics Application (IDEA®), the Practice
and the ACD-ICD C.E. Conference.
Outstanding Student Leader Award
The national award to recognize student leaders
is called the Outstanding Student Leader
Award. The ACD matches each Section’s cash
award up to $250. The matching cash award
only applies to the Outstanding Student Leader
Award and does not apply to other student
awards. Only one award may be given per
dental school per year. An offi cial form, available
from the Executive Offi ce, must be used
by Sections to request matching funds. Sections
may award more than the $500 matching
total. This matching arrangement is an effort to
encourage Sections to give our only national
student award, thereby helping to strengthen
the identity of the award.

Danube Odyssey
in August 6-19, 2012
The College has made plans to offer a
Danube Odyssey river cruise in August
6-19, 2012 aboard the ms River Odyssey
or ms River Discovery II. You deserve the
royal treatment—and that’s what you’ll get
on this splendid river cruise that traces the
paths of the Imperial Hapsburgs. As you glide along
the fabled “Blue Danube,” you’ll call on baroque
masterpieces such as Linz, where Mozart composed
his famous Linz Symphony over four days in 1783...
or explore the pastoral scenery of Salzburg, where
you may happily recall scenes from The Sound of
Music...and be dazzled by the gilded treasures of
Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace. If you’re a classical
music lover, you’ll adore the private concert at Vienna’s
Kursalon, where Strauss often played. You’ll
even experience the unspoiled beauty of the Danube
Gorge on a wonderful small boat cruise. Best of all,
you can sit back and absorb the sensory pleasures
of cruising about a deluxe riverboat, appreciating
the fi ner things in life, and unpacking just once. The
The luncheon meeting was held in conjunction with
the West Virginia Section of the ICD. Special guests
included the new dean at the WVU School of Dentistry,
Dr. David Felton, along with offi cers in the senior class
at the school, Josh and Laura Abbott. Dr. Ralls spoke of
the exciting projects that are happening on the national
level and also showed the new ACD Video, which highlights
the many accomplishments of the College over
the years. The 15 and 25-year Fellows were recognized
during the meeting.
Don Morrison, Moe Ghalichebaf, James Caveney, Steve Ralls,
Bob Wanker, Sami Ghareeb (l to r)
Although small in numbers the West Virginia Section is
proud of its many programs and activities. This coming
year in Las Vegas eight new Fellows will be inducted
into the College, the most in West Virginia history.
The West Virginia Section has supported many new activities
over the years including the White Coat Ceremony
at the WVU School of Dentistry. It has also fi nancially
supported students attending the West Virginia Dental
Regency Spotlight — — Regency 3
This is my fi rst year as Regent of
Regency 3. I have had a chance
to visit all the Sections in the
Regency except the Puerto Rico
Section. However, I have been in
regular contact with some of our
new Fellows in Puerto Rico and
I am encouraged that 2012 will
show some great progress.
Geraldine Ferris The fi rst thing I became aware
of in my visits to each Section
was the different ways each Section functions and
communicates with the Section’s Fellows, the state
dental association, and the dental schools. The size
of the Section has a lot to do with this. The Carolina
Section involves two states (North Carolina and
South Carolina) so they are a fairly large Section. The
Florida Section is also very large due to the number
of practicing and retired dentists there.
As I made my visits to the Sections I fi rst thought
that we should attempt to unify the activities and
programs within the Regency. Then I realized that
this is the special charm and uniqueness of each
Section and I do not want to do anything to change
that. I learned a lot about the many activities of each
Section—how they are similar and yet different from
the other Sections in Regency 3. I have met some
wonderful people in the leadership and membership
of each Section. What a wonderful honor it is for me
to have this opportunity. Let me tell you a bit about
my visits to the Sections.
Alabama Section. The Alabama meeting I attended
was in conjunction with the Alabama Dental Association
(ALDA) and was held at Perdido Beach, Alabama.
The Alabama Section also has a meeting at the
University of Alabama Dental School Alumni weekend.
Both of these meetings are joint meetings with
the ICD. They alternate which organization plans
the meeting, but each group has a separate business
meeting before or after the breakfast.
The Alabama Section has a strong ethics role at the
dental school such as the White Coat Ceremony.
There are plans to honor one of their valued senior
ALDA and ACD members with a symbolic Named
Fund in the ACD Foundation at an annual dinner.
Dr Milt Essig, the 2011 Alabama Section Chair, was a
wonderful host and taught me a lot about the commitment
and involvement of the Alabama Section to
the ethics, professionalism, and values of the American
College Dentists.
Carolinas Section. My fi rst Section visit was to the
weekend meeting that the Carolinas Section has
held for many years. It is complete with a two-day
speaker program, golf tournament, and wonderful
dinner on Saturday night. The Section has a great
presence at the UNC School of Dentistry and is becoming
involved in the newest dental school at East
Carolina University. They are involved in the dental
school’s White Coat Ceremony and have an ethics
workshop program in place. I shared my visit with
our Executive Director, Steve Ralls, so he gave most
of the update. Then the new Chair of the Section, Dr.
Kent Tucker, invited me to give an ACD update at
the North Carolina State Dental Meeting where they
have a joint luncheon with ICD. I was very proud of
the ACD representation at that luncheon.
Florida Section. The Florida Section does not have a
separate weekend meeting like the Carolinas Section,
but they do have a meeting separate from the other
honorary organizations. This meeting is held at the annual
meeting of the Florida Dental Association (FDA).
Regency Spotlight — Regency 3
This year the meeting, which is normally a breakfast,
was a luncheon due to confl icting schedules with the
association. The luncheon was held honoring Dr. H.
Raymond Klein, Past President of the ACD and Past
President of the FDA, who passed away and couple
of years ago. The Florida Section previously started a
Named Fund with the ACD Foundation in Dr. Klein’s
name and intended to continue honoring Dr. Klein at
the luncheon by providing an opportunity for more
donations. Dr. Tom Winkler, current President of the
ACD and close friend of Ray Klein, made a very generous
contribution and sent a beautiful note for me to
read at the luncheon. Ray’s wife and son, Renee Klein
and Raymond, who is in his pediatric residency, were
able to attend the luncheon. Dr. Idalia Lastra, the 2011
and 2012 Chair of the Florida Section, was assisted in
organizing the luncheon by Dr. Frank Addabbo, the
Secretary and Chair-elect.
The Florida Section is heavily involved in ethics
workshops at both dental schools and numerous residency
programs. There is talk of three new private
dental schools opening in Florida over the next few
years. The Florida Section is going to really need to
activate many more Fellows to help with their commitment
to ethics and professionalism. It will be a
diffi cult challenge, but I am confi dent the Section
Fellows will step up to help.
Georgia Section. The Georgia Section has the opportunity
to meet three times a year: a breakfast at
the Georgia State Dental Society’s Annual Meeting,
a breakfast at the Hinman Dental Meeting, and an
annual dinner they sponsor honoring the memory of
Dr. Jay MacCaslin. These are joint meetings with the
ICD and PFA. They rotate which group organizes the
breakfast, but each organization has a separate business
meeting before or after the breakfast to conduct
their individual business agendas. Dr Richard Weinman
is the 2011 Section Chair, and he has been great
to work with. The Georgia Section is involved in an
ethics workshop and White Coat Ceremony at Medical
College of Georgia College of Dental Medicine.
Members of the Section help treat patients at a Peruvian
dental facility sponsored by the dental school.
Also, many of the ACD Fellows are helping to set up
and treat indigent patients at a ”fi rst time” program
called MOM (Mission of Mercy) that will be held in
Woodstock, Georgia, in August 2011.
Puerto Rico Section. I have already mentioned my
slow but defi nite progress with the Puerto Rico Section.
I have met some wonderful dentists in Puerto
Rico and I know they are willing to work together
with me to establish an ethics workshop at their dental
school similar to some that are held in the other
Sections. They are also working hard to increase the
number of active Fellows in the Section. I am certainly
going to help them in any way I can.
As I attended other Section meetings and reported
on Regency activities I noted the special dinners
that the Georgia Section has for Dr. Jay MacCaslin
and the Florida Section has for Dr. Ray Klein. Both
of these deceased ACD Fellows have lots of friends
throughout the Regency and others may also wish to
make a contribution to our Foundation in one or both
of their names.
In closing my report, I want to repeat what I discussed
at every Section meeting I was able to attend,
and that is membership. I know there are many
dentists who are worthy of Fellowship but they are
overlooked from nomination. We defi nitely want to
maintain the high standards of Fellowship. We are
always talking about tapping the younger qualifi
ed dentists, but there are too many hard-working
“slightly old er” dentists that have been missed because
we “just assumed they were already members”
or that “maybe someone else will do it.” Let’s not fall
back on those excuses. Let’s look around and fi nd the
best and brightest of all ages to nominate for Fellowship.
Then, consider starting a mentoring program in
each Section, assigning a member to each new Fellow.
It may or may not be the primary sponsor. The
mentor can help motivate the new Fellow to become
active in one of the Section’s programs or activities.
Let’s remind our members, including new Fellows,
that Fellowship in the American College is the beginning,
not the end. Now is when the College needs
every Fellow helping us accomplish our mission of
advancing excellence, ethics, professionalism, and
leadership in dentistry.
I am truly honored to have this opportunity to serve
the College.
Experience of a Lifetime—Visit to the “Ike”
On July
15 th and
16 th , I fl ew
on a Navy
“Greyhound”
along with
11 other
civilians and
landed 200
miles out to
sea on the
aircraft carrier,
U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), otherwise
known as “Ike.” The ship carried 3,000 sailors,
average age of 22, and 11 jet aircraft. This carrier is
the training facility for new pilots who were experiencing
their fi rst landings, fl y-bys, and take-offs from
an aircraft carrier. The carrier just fi nished a facelift
in Norfolk, Virginia, before going back to sea. It is
heading to the Persian Gulf next winter.
We were treated royally beginning with our initial
experience of putting on earplugs, headsets, helmet
and lifejackets and taken to the fl ight deck where we
experienced the unbelievable noise of the jets and
the intense heat from the engines. We then visited
the newly upgraded and very impressive computer
rooms, kitchens, and medical and dental facilities,
as well as the hangar where sailors were practicing
how to put out a fi re on a jet. As a dentist and Fellow
of the College I found the dental clinic particularly
interesting.
I was
amazed at
how hard
our sailors
work at
sea—14
to 16 hour
days are not
uncommon.
There is
little opportunity
for
sunlight,
only on
the hangar
deck.
The carrier
is a
city unto
itself. They
distill their own water, have a full bakery, and can
fi x anything on the ship—including all medical and
dental equipment, as well as jet engines and computers.
The pilots were also practicing night landings
which went on until 2:00 a.m. We were given semiprivate
sleeping quarters; we found sleeping with the
“boom” of airplanes landing three decks above a bit
loud for getting a good night’s sleep!
We also toured the bridge, and other observation
deck areas. We were given wonderful mementos of
our trip and a photo album by the Ike’s commanding
offi cer before being catapulted off in our Greyhound.
It truly was the experience of a lifetime and I thank
those involved for making this opportunity possible.
Earlier this year, I lost a very dear
friend. Even though Dorothy was
nearly 94 and 30 years older than I,
we had a very special connection.
After work I would often stop in to
see her and we would usually have
a martini together and visit for an
hour. It was a special time that we
both looked forward to. I was honored
to be able to enjoy her warmth
Thomas J. Wickliffe and wisdom and to share the fi nal
chapter of her life. Hers was a life
well lived! She traveled extensively with her husband
and together they enjoyed each and every day. They were
both caring and generous people and during their lifetime,
they supported many projects and causes that were
important to them. In her fi nal days, Dorothy had a great
deal of satisfaction and peace of mind knowing that she
would still be able to have a positive infl uence, even after
she was gone. Through planned giving, she provided for
those things that were important in her life.
I learned much from this wonderful lady about love
and life and about making a difference. We each have a
unique set of things that are important in our lives. For
most of us family is at the top of the list—for me, my
profession is also near the top. I am grateful to be part of
Please join me in taking a lesson from Dorothy regarding
“peace of mind” and “making a difference.” As you
a planned gift to the American College of Dentists
Foundation. Your gift will help ensure that we have the
long-term fi nancial resources necessary to accomplish
our mission. Your gift will also create an important legacy
to a great professional career and have an indelible
impact on an organization that stands for the very best
in dentistry. There are various ways to make a planned
gift, including a charitable gift annuity, a charitable remainder
trust, or naming the Foundation as the benefi -
Another way is simply naming the foundation in your
will or trust. I urge you to please call Dr. Steve Ralls at
Online Dues Payment and Donations
You can now pay dues online in the “Members” section of
our Web site, www.acd.org. Online donations to the ACD
Foundation can also be made.

What is the endowment?
Thank You for your Continued Support!
Our endowment is the collection of restricted and designated
funds in the American College of Dentists Foundation
(ACDF).
Why do we need to increase our
endowment?
The endowment ensures the American College of Dentists
has the fi nancial resources to accomplish its mission
well into the future. A healthy endowment allows
the College to undertake meaningful programs and
activities that improve our profession and oral health
care while helping maintain the College’s status as the
“Conscience of Dentistry.”
What is the Gies Fellow program?
The Gies Fellow program is designed to raise support
for the endowment. Fellows who wish to participate
contribute $1,000 to the Foundation payable over four
years. Gies Fellows each receive a certifi cate and a special
attachment to their College pins. This is not a new
type of Fellowship, but a means to recognize Fellows for
their substantial contributions to our endowment.
Foundation for the Future
Your support is Needed!
Yes! I want to make a pledge to
the ACD Foundation, as follows:
Gies Fellow
❑ $1,000 single payment
$250 now, $750 for the next 3 years
❑
Gies Fellow to Gies Benefactor
❑ $4,000 single payment
$1,000 now, $1,000 for the next 3 years
❑
Gies Benefactor
❑ $5,000 single payment
$1,250 now, $1,250 for the next 3 years
❑
General Gifts
$_______________ (please specify amount)
Remember the ACD Foundation in your estate.
Donations are tax-deductible under IRS code
Section 501(c)(3). I.D. #23-7222977.
What is the Gies Benefactor program?
The Gies Benefactor program is similar to the Gies Fellow
program, but a Gies Benefactor contributes $5,000
or more to the Foundation, also payable over four years.
Each Gies Benefactor receives a certifi cate, a 10K gold
lapel pin, and a special attachment to the pin. If you are
already a Gies Fellow, you can become a Gies Benefactor
for an additional contribution of $4,000 payable over
four years.
What are Named Funds?
Sections, corporations, or individuals may establish a
symbolic Named Fund in our Foundation for a contribution
of $5,000 or more. This is an excellent opportunity
for a Section to honor an outstanding Fellow, couple,
dignitary, or other entity.
Your support is needed!
The mission of the College is more relevant now than
ever. These are important programs, and fi nancial resources
are needed to make them a reality. As a leader
of dentistry you are committed to improving the profession
and oral health care. You realize the ideals of
dentistry are worth upholding. Can we count on your
support to make a difference and build a “Foundation
for the Future?” Use the pledge card below or call the
executive offi ce for more information, 888-ACD-1920.
Participation in Professionalism
Survey Needed
The ASDE Section once again respectfully requests the
participation of ACD Fellows in a brief survey on the
concept of professionalism. The response rate to this short
survey by Fellows has been limited and we are very
much in need of your views. We are interested in how
you personally defi ne professionalism and what attributes
you would use to describe it. The Professionalism
Survey can be reached by going to the ASDE Web site,
www.societyfordentalethics.org. Scroll down on fi rst
page to the survey. A summary of the survey results will
be reported as an item in an upcoming ACD News and
our goal is to develop this topic into an article or articles
themed around the topic of professionalism to be published
in Issues in Dental Ethics. The participation of College
Fellows in the survey would be greatly appreciated
as you likely represent individuals with very informed
views on this topic. Please help with this project.
ASDE Summer Planning Meeting
Members of the ASDE Board and Planning Committee
will meet at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in
San Francisco on August 13-14, 2011. This summer planning
meeting is a tradition that was initiated by our late
colleague Dr. Tom Hasegawa, Jr. and has been held each
year since 2005. Our planning meeting will again focus this
year on our activities in our role as a Section of the College.
Continuing Education Course
at Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry
An ASDE-sponsored continuing education course
entitled “Culture and Dental Ethics” will be presented
at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco
on Friday, August 12 th . Dental ethics can be diffi
cult in any environment. But in a community like the
San Francisco Bay Area or in the State of California, the
diversity of cultures complicates things and often adds a
challenging twist to conventional ethical decision-making.
This workshop will begin with brief discussions on
culture, real and faux cultural differences, and the problem
of stereotyping. This will be followed by facilitated
small-group discussions of exemplary dental cases. It
will focus on the positive, intriguing, and humorous
ways that culture infl uences the delivery of humane,
high-quality dental care. Practitioner-patient interac-

tions and internal staff interactions will be emphasized.
Participants are invited to bring their own cases for
discussion. The workshop concludes with a summary
of recommendations and cautions. Information about
registration is available through the school’s Web site,
http://dental.pacifi c.edu.
ASDE Ethics Faculty Development Workshop
proposed for the American Dental Education
Association Annual Meeting
A workshop entitled “Engaging Students in Professional
Identity Formation” has been submitted by ACD Fellows
and ASDE Section members, Drs. Muriel Bebeau and
Marilyn Lantz, for the upcoming spring ADEA meeting
in Orlando, Florida. Drs. Lantz and Bebeau will be
joined in this presentation by medical colleague Dr.
Kathy Faber-Langendoen. This session will describe the
experiences of educators who have used the Professional
Identity Essay to measure levels of identity formation
and to engage students in self-assessment and refl ection.
This ASDE workshop will describe strategies for
promoting professional identity formation during professional
education and for remediating professionals
who have violated professional standards. The session
will describe a validated strategy for assessing professional
identity formation as it evolves across the lifespan;
apply evidence with stages and transition phases
of professional identity formation from law, medicine,
dentistry and the military; and present strategies for
promoting professional identity formation with predoctoral
students and for remediating professionals who
have violated professional standards.
Individual School Updates
The Marquette University School of Dentistry held
its fi rst student-run Ethics Club meeting on June 6 th . The
meeting was very well attended with approximately 80
students of varying years present. The format for this
meeting was mainly informational and recruitment
oriented. An ethical case was presented by Tyler Beinlich
and discussed by the group. Several faculty members attended
as well. The club is a subcommittee of ASDA and
will have quarterly meetings that include case discussions,
a journal club, and guest speakers. The faculty
mentor for this club is Dr. Toni Roucka, an ASDE Board
Member at Large.
The Indiana University School of Dentistry Laskin
Lecturer for 2011, Dr. Gerald Winslow, met with IUSD’s
SPEA chapter on July 22 nd and participated in a wide
ranging conversation about ethics in academic and
practice environments. The next day he presented a
formal lecture as part of the Laskin series entitled, “Top
Ten Ethical Issues in Dentistry.” Dr. Winslow is a past
president of the predecessor dental ethics organization
now known as the ASDE. Because of his work in the
professional ethics of dentistry, he was awarded Honorary
Fellowship in the College in 2010.
Nicaragua Dental Student
Mission Trip 2011
During Spring Break March 13-18, 2011, ten dental
students, two hygienists, one assistant and two dentists
traveled to San Marcos, Nicaragua, to offer dental
services to many nearby residents, many who had never
seen a dentist. All dental trips are adventures and this
one certainly qualifi ed. The location was a couple-hours
ride by school bus into the mountains outside the Managua
Airport.
Arriving around midnight, we entered a compound
built by a Canadian organization to service the retreat
needs of many Christian churches and organizations in
that country. The Skylark Retreat Centre is a beautiful
new campsite building grouping in a lush semitropical
landscape. It has a main large medical building that has
a middle open area that lends itself to curtain divisions
of 8-10 bays for dental operatories. On the periphery of
the two opposite sides there are individual small beds
and bathrooms for up to 14 individuals or doubles.
These open to the outside and make for almost instant
access to the dental clinic, a most effi cient set-up for
medical/dental work. Electricity is available but compressors
must be brought in to run dental equipment.
Therein lay the struggles of dental missions in post 9-11
days. To bring in massive amounts of dental equipment
and supplies by airplane is a challenge, a hazard to protect
from damage, a problem to keep safe from theft or
untimely custom delays, and a very costly expense since
airlines now charge for every bag, $50-$100 for each excess
bag, and limit weight to 50 pounds. Dental mission
work is now a very costly and problematic service to the
world in this new global economy. None of this would
be possible without the generous donations of equip-
22 August 2011
Volunteers in Action
ment by ATAC, a fl ying dental missions organization
led by Dr. Jim Berry, and free supplies donated by Dr.
Robert Allen, both of the Dallas area. Those behind-thescenes
dentists are real heroes!
Attempting to see 50-60 patients per day for what
turned out to be rather comprehensive basic restorative
care, we were able to examine patients, give thorough
prophylaxis and oral hygiene lessons, remove a few
teeth, and fi ll most of the cavities presented us! Often
you hear of mass extractions in such settings. We were
privileged to see patients from several churches nearby
who were brought in daily by our rented school bus.
The team of two dentists, myself (Dr. T. Bob Davis) and
Dr. Jody Yarbro, president-elect of the Christian Dental
Society, was complimented by my dental offi ce assistant,
Maria Camacho, and two hygienists, Morgan Harris and
Rebekah Harley. A broad-based dental student cadre
included students from the University of Texas School
of Dentistry at Houston and Texas A&M Health Science
Center Baylor College of Dentistry. Well balanced, it
was composed of two freshmen, two sophomores, four
juniors, and two seniors. This combination was ideal
for accomplishing our tasks. I took my new handheld
portable x-ray (NOMAD) and computer. It was invaluable
to have radiographs on everyone—a fi rst for me in
my 35 years of dental missions! We used a few medical
full-length tables as patient chairs and stood to work
sometimes. Some makeshift dental patient chairs were
made by the Retreat Centre for us prior to our arrival.
These allowed for some sit-down dentistry.
Dr. Yarbro is the ultimate super dentist and team player!
Senior dental student (now dentist) Stephen Sperry
was the proverbial ”Energizer Bunny” as he not only
provided exceptional dental care but also kept all the
equipment running! My assistant Maria provided

excellent translation and chairside assisting as did the
pastor and other staff from the churches. Our hygienists,
Morgan and Beka, worked their fi ngers to the bone
by seeing practically every patient. Our student leaders,
Drew Nalley, Jacob Moore, John Vann, and Stephen led
the group meetings and provided inspiring mentoring.
Freshmen Jing Ge and Stephanie Yang, plus sophomores
Coleman Meadows and John, maintained sterilization
and assisting duties while juniors, Drew, Jacob, James
Vu, and Christopher Williams, provided basic care.
Seniors Nguyet Dang and Stephen demonstrated why
they are now graduates and licensed dentists.
These students were persistent and professional,
concerned and compassionate, fun and humorous
(sometimes at my own expense – Ha!). They never
complained, never lost their cool, while working hard
and long, sacrifi cing physically with aches and pains to
trudge on to the end of the patient load in less-thanideal
conditions. They were the best of what I believe is
so good about our young dental students today! They
inspire and encourage, lift up and pick up. They smile
and shine with hope and they left the patients healthier
Ethics Matters
Continued from page 21
The University at Buffalo is continuing its ethics case
discussions with fi rst-year dental students again this
fall. ACD members serve as facilitators. While this
component of the program has been in place for many
years, three years ago a session with third-year students
was added to the curriculum. The advantage of doing
this again with third-year students is that these students
can look at more clinically relevant cases, since they
now have some experience to relate to the case. In the
spring of 2011 students established a SPEC chapter and
the group will be examining the school’s current honor
system and code of ethics as its fi rst project.
The Oregon Health & Science University SPEA president,
Patrick Corning, held the fi rst offi cial meeting of
the Oregon SPEA group in June 2011. It was a success
with well over 60 students in attendance. The invited
speaker was malpractice attorney, Christopher Verbiest,
who led a stimulating discussion on ethics and law from
the view of the insurance company.
meeting less than three months away in Las Vegas, October
9-10, student leaders from across the country are
fi nalizing plans to ensure the meeting is a success. The
goal of the initial meeting will be to modify and ratify
the constitution, bylaws, and standing rules that are
currently being drafted; to elect a national leadership
team; and to fi nalize a strategic plan which will guide
the association over the next few years. Intermixed in
the meeting will be several training sessions from
leaders in dentistry, including Dr. Lawrence Garetto
and Dr. Bruce Peltier.
In the coming weeks SPEA plans to launch its national
Web site, and begin its registration process. All dental
schools will be invited to send representatives to the
meeting, and will be asked to participate in the fi nalization
of governance documents and election processes.
Election to the national committee will be open to all
dental students. More information will shortly be available
on the Web site as well as through emails to all
dental schools across the country. The future is bright
for SPEA and we are truly grateful for the ACD and
what they have done to ensure that our association
can be available to all dental
students.
