Participation in Professionalism Survey Needed The ASDE Section once again respectfully requests the participation of ACD Fellows in a brief survey on the concept of professionalism. The response rate to this short survey by Fellows has been limited and we are very much in need of your views. We are interested in how you personally defi ne professionalism and what attributes you would use to describe it. The Professionalism Survey can be reached by going to the ASDE Web site, www.societyfordentalethics.org. Scroll down on fi rst page to the survey. A summary of the survey results will be reported as an item in an upcoming ACD News and our goal is to develop this topic into an article or articles themed around the topic of professionalism to be published in Issues in Dental Ethics. The participation of College Fellows in the survey would be greatly appreciated as you likely represent individuals with very informed views on this topic. Please help with this project. Endowed Chair Focused on Ethics in Dentistry Creighton University’s president, the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., has appointed Dr. Gary H. Westerman as the inaugural chair holder of the Dr. Philip Maschka Chair for Ethics in Dentistry. This is the fi rst-ever endowed chair specifi cally dedicated to the advancement of the discipline of dental ethics. Dr. Westerman is the Chair of American Society for Dental Ethics Section Mission Statement The Mission of the Section is to support professional ethics in dentistry as the foundation of oral health care. The members of the Section are dedicated to the ongoing study of ethical issues, ethics education, and the development of the profession to promote integrity and ethical practice in service of patients, community, and society. ASDE invites all Fellows to visit our Web site at www.societyfordentalethics.org. 20 August 2011 Ethics Matters An Update from the American Society for Dental Ethics Section the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry and an ACD Fellow. His research involves dental behavioral science topics in collaboration with Creighton University’s Counseling and Psychological Services and dental laser technology in the area of dental caries inhibition. New Ethics and Law Textbook A new textbook entitled Professional Responsibility in Dentistry: A Practical Guide to Law and Ethics authored by Joseph Graskemper, DDS, JD has been recently published by Wiley Blackwell. This new book is available in both hardcopy and Kindle electronic format from Amazon.com. According to Dr. Graskemper, his book covers many aspects for both new and not-so-new dentists in the fi elds of dental law, ethics, professionalism, risk management, and practice management. Dr. Graskemper is an Associate Clinical Professor at SUNY Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Upcoming Events and Presentation ASDE Summer Planning Meeting Members of the ASDE Board and Planning Committee will meet at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco on August 13-14, 2011. This summer planning meeting is a tradition that was initiated by our late colleague Dr. Tom Hasegawa, Jr. and has been held each year since 2005. Our planning meeting will again focus this year on our activities in our role as a Section of the College. Continuing Education Course at Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry An ASDE-sponsored continuing education course entitled “Culture and Dental Ethics” will be presented at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco on Friday, August 12 th . Dental ethics can be diffi cult in any environment. But in a community like the San Francisco Bay Area or in the State of California, the diversity of cultures complicates things and often adds a challenging twist to conventional ethical decision-making. This workshop will begin with brief discussions on culture, real and faux cultural differences, and the problem of stereotyping. This will be followed by facilitated small-group discussions of exemplary dental cases. It will focus on the positive, intriguing, and humorous ways that culture infl uences the delivery of humane, high-quality dental care. Practitioner-patient interac-
tions and internal staff interactions will be emphasized. Participants are invited to bring their own cases for discussion. The workshop concludes with a summary of recommendations and cautions. Dental Ethics Facilitator Training Course in Las Vegas Members of the ASDE Section are very pleased to present the next course in the Individuals Program of the Professional Ethics Initiative. The seven-hour Dental Ethics Facilitator Training course is described on page 5. ASDE Ethics Faculty Development Workshop proposed for the American Dental Education Association Annual Meeting A workshop entitled “Engaging Students in Professional Identity Formation” has been submitted by ACD Fellows and ASDE Section members, Drs. Muriel Bebeau and Marilyn Lantz, for the upcoming spring ADEA meeting in Orlando, Florida. Drs. Lantz and Bebeau will be joined in this presentation by medical colleague Dr. Kathy Faber-Langendoen. This session will describe the experiences of educators who have used the Professional Identity Essay to measure levels of identity formation and to engage students in self-assessment and refl ection. This ASDE workshop will describe strategies for promoting professional identity formation during professional education and for remediating professionals who have violated professional standards. The session will describe a validated strategy for assessing professional identity formation as it evolves across the lifespan; apply evidence with stages and transition phases of professional identity formation from law, medicine, dentistry and the military; and present strategies for promoting professional identity formation with predoctoral students and for remediating professionals who have violated professional standards. 2011 National Dental Association Annual Session President’s Symposium ACD Fellow and ASDE Section member Dr. David Anderson from the University of Pittsburgh has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 NDAF/Colgate- Palmolive Faculty Recognition Award in the category of Administration/Service. He received this prestigious award from the National Dental Association on Friday, July 22 nd at the NDA Annual Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. He was also selected to present a paper as part of the President’s Symposium of the 2011 National Dental Association Annual Session. His paper, presented on July 23 rd was entitled “Deontological Itera- Ethics Matters tions in Contemporary Clinical Practice” and focused on contrasting the iterations of “duty” in the various environments of medical ethics, healthcare ethics, military medical ethics, humanitarian ethics and social justice. Student Professionalism and Ethics Association News Individual School Updates The Marquette University School of Dentistry held its fi rst student-run Ethics Club meeting on June 6 th . The meeting was very well attended with approximately 80 students of varying years present. The format for this meeting was mainly informational and recruitment oriented. An ethical case was presented by Tyler Beinlich and discussed by the group. Several faculty members attended as well. The club is a subcommittee of ASDA and will have quarterly meetings that include case discussions, a journal club, and guest speakers. The faculty mentor for this club is Dr. Toni Roucka, an ASDE Board Member at Large. The Indiana University School of Dentistry Laskin Lecturer for 2011, Dr. Gerald Winslow, met with IUSD’s SPEA chapter on July 22 nd and participated in a wide ranging conversation about ethics in academic and practice environments. The next day he presented a formal lecture as part of the Laskin series entitled, “Top Ten Ethical Issues in Dentistry.” Dr. Winslow is a past president of the predecessor dental ethics organization now known as the ASDE. Because of his work in the professional ethics of dentistry, he was awarded Honorary Fellowship in the College in 2010. SPEC Becomes SPEA Continued on page 23 The Student Professionalism and Ethics Club (SPEC) is now known as the Student Professionalism and Ethics Association (SPEA). SPEA will be conducting a national organizing meeting on October 9-10 in Las Vegas in association with the ACD Annual Meeting and Convocation. SPEA representatives are expected to attend from nearly 30 dental schools. The ACD is providing meeting space and complimentary registrations to our meeting for the participants. ACD News 21
