Regency Spotlight — — Regency 3
This is my fi rst year as Regent of
Regency 3. I have had a chance
to visit all the Sections in the
Regency except the Puerto Rico
Section. However, I have been in
regular contact with some of our
new Fellows in Puerto Rico and
I am encouraged that 2012 will
show some great progress.
Geraldine Ferris The fi rst thing I became aware
of in my visits to each Section
was the different ways each Section functions and
communicates with the Section’s Fellows, the state
dental association, and the dental schools. The size
of the Section has a lot to do with this. The Carolina
Section involves two states (North Carolina and
South Carolina) so they are a fairly large Section. The
Florida Section is also very large due to the number
of practicing and retired dentists there.
As I made my visits to the Sections I fi rst thought
that we should attempt to unify the activities and
programs within the Regency. Then I realized that
this is the special charm and uniqueness of each
Section and I do not want to do anything to change
that. I learned a lot about the many activities of each
Section—how they are similar and yet different from
the other Sections in Regency 3. I have met some
wonderful people in the leadership and membership
of each Section. What a wonderful honor it is for me
to have this opportunity. Let me tell you a bit about
my visits to the Sections.
Alabama Section. The Alabama meeting I attended
was in conjunction with the Alabama Dental Association
(ALDA) and was held at Perdido Beach, Alabama.
The Alabama Section also has a meeting at the
University of Alabama Dental School Alumni weekend.
Both of these meetings are joint meetings with
the ICD. They alternate which organization plans
the meeting, but each group has a separate business
meeting before or after the breakfast.
The Alabama Section has a strong ethics role at the
dental school such as the White Coat Ceremony.
There are plans to honor one of their valued senior
ALDA and ACD members with a symbolic Named
Fund in the ACD Foundation at an annual dinner.
Dr Milt Essig, the 2011 Alabama Section Chair, was a
wonderful host and taught me a lot about the commitment
and involvement of the Alabama Section to
the ethics, professionalism, and values of the American
College Dentists.
Carolinas Section. My fi rst Section visit was to the
weekend meeting that the Carolinas Section has
held for many years. It is complete with a two-day
speaker program, golf tournament, and wonderful
dinner on Saturday night. The Section has a great
presence at the UNC School of Dentistry and is becoming
involved in the newest dental school at East
Carolina University. They are involved in the dental
school’s White Coat Ceremony and have an ethics
workshop program in place. I shared my visit with
our Executive Director, Steve Ralls, so he gave most
of the update. Then the new Chair of the Section, Dr.
Kent Tucker, invited me to give an ACD update at
the North Carolina State Dental Meeting where they
have a joint luncheon with ICD. I was very proud of
the ACD representation at that luncheon.
Florida Section. The Florida Section does not have a
separate weekend meeting like the Carolinas Section,
but they do have a meeting separate from the other
honorary organizations. This meeting is held at the annual
meeting of the Florida Dental Association (FDA).
