The College had a number
of notable accomplishments
last year. The College
is involved in a number of
projects and these are summarized
online (see www.acd.org/
projects.htm). Besides those, the following are other
2010 activities or initiatives of note:
ACD 2010 Annual Meeting and Convocation—
Our ACD 2010 Annual Meeting and Convocation in
Orlando took place Thursday and Friday, October
7-8, 2010, at the Rosen Centre Hotel located at 9840
International Drive. We had an outstanding line-up
of speakers and entertainment. On Thursday morning,
Patrick Kuhse, an executive formerly convicted of
white-collar crime, spoke on “Prominence to Prison:
Why Smart People Do Dumb Things.” Michael R.
Ragan, a dentist and lawyer, presented on “Critical
Decision Making in an Era of Increased Litigation and

2010—A Year in Review
Dental Board Actions.” Also on Thursday morning, Dr.
David W. Chambers conducted a focus group on the
“Practice Ethics Assessment and Development” prototype
of the Professional Ethics Initiative. The program
allowed dentists to assess the ethical climates of their
practices; a signifi cant pre-meeting commitment was
required, this program offered 17 hours of C.E. credit.
In the afternoon, Al Walker gave an informative and
humorous presentation, “Gateway to Excellence.” The
Fellows Forum followed, where the Interactive Dental
Ethics Application (IDEA®) was demonstrated by Dr.
Stephen Ralls, who gave a general overview, and Dr.
David Chambers, who discussed a specifi c case-study
utilizing a video. The day concluded with the Meet
& Greet. Dr. Bruce Weinstein, otherwise known as
The Ethics Guy®, provided the keynote presentation
on Friday morning. John Pullum, unbelievable mind
reader, entertained us after lunch. The U.S. Surgeon
General, Regina M. Benjamin, MD, MBA, was scheduled
to be the Convocation speaker, but she cancelled
due to another commitment.
Projects and Initiatives Summary—The ACD has
been busy working on a number of important projects
and initiatives—many of which are updated herein—
including the Professional Ethics Initiative, the Interactive
Dental Ethics Application (IDEA®), the Practice
Ethics Assessment and Development program, the
integration with the American Society for Dental Ethics,
the Ethics Scholarship Program, the ACD Video,
the ACD Travel Program, the “Introduction to Dental
Ethics,” “Dental Ethics Facilitator Training” courses,
and the ACD-ICD C.E. Conference.
Outstanding Student Leader Award
The national award to recognize student leaders
is called the Outstanding Student Leader
Award. The ACD matches each Section’s cash
award up to $250. The matching cash award
only applies to the Outstanding Student Leader
Award and does not apply to other student
awards. Only one award may be given per
dental school per year. An offi cial form, available
from the Executive Offi ce, must be used
by Sections to request matching funds. Sections
may award more than the $500 matching
total. This matching arrangement is an effort to
encourage Sections to give our only national
student award, thereby helping to strengthen
the identity of the award.
