Leveraging PLM for manufacturing excellence
(Source: Express Computer Online)
PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) is a business approach for deriving maximum benefit from the product data
during the entire life of the product. The need for the PLM approach and software products has arisen due to prevalent
business challenges.
These include:
Shrinking product lifecycle - Continuous product innovation, a necessity in today’s highly competitive markets, has led
to dramatic reductions in product lifecycles. Businesses have to introduce new, high-quality products and upgrade much
faster and more frequently to survive in a market overflowing with choices for the discerning customer.
Mass customisation - Intense competition has forced businesses to achieve differentiation in the market by providing
highly customised products catering to specific customer needs.
Increasing outsourcing - The current trend in the manufacturing industry is to outsource parts or operations from
specialised vendors who provide more cost effective and/or quality products than those manufactured in-house.
Globalisation - Business alliances have to be forged on a global basis to derive maximum benefit from location,
advantages like cost, quality, proximity to raw material or markets.
These factors have driven the need for better utilisation and management of product-related data across the supply chain
and throughout the lifecycle of a product.
Different PLM components deal with all types of product related data:
Collaborative product design - Deals with the product and manufacturing process design.
Product Data Management(PDM) - Enables functions that manage and publish product data.
Direct material sourcing - Handles product data related to suppliers and vendors.
Customer needs management - Handles product data related to customers.
Product Portfolio Management - Manages reporting and presentation of product data.
Thus, an overlap of functionality can be observed between PLM products of different vendors in areas like engineering
and ERP.
The major benefits of PLM are reduction in time-to-market and product development cost, lower rework/rejection rates,
increased customer satisfaction and revenue generation.
According to emerging trends in the manufacturing industry, advanced software tools are increasingly being used for
carrying out functions like process planning, factory modelling, operation simulation, assembly sequencing line, cell
design, and shop-floor documentation. This helps the company avoid expensive prototyping processes to a great extent.
Analysis of the manufacturing flow can help to optimise factory floor space, identify and minimise bottlenecks, address
quality issues and reduce rework and scrap rates. All such manufacturing process management tools are emerging as the
key components of PLM solutions.
11) A definite corollary of shrinking product lifecycles is that:
A) The businessman’s challenge is the customer’s opportunity.
B) Businesses are unable to maintain a high quality of their products.
C) Customers are more discerning than before.
D) All of the above.
12) A PC manufacturer designs a new laptop and identifies the required changes in assembly-line processes. He wants to
plan and test the changes in the shop-floor layout and workflow, but without creating physical prototypes. To do this, he
will require a minimum:
A) PLM, because simulation is an integral part of PLM.
B) Advanced simulation and planning tools.
C) Advanced simulation and planning tools integrated with PLM.
D) None of the above.
B) Once the product design is complete.
C) During the design of a product.
D) During product pre-planning.
14) An Indian IT company that specialises in providing application software services will implement PLM so that it can
benefit by:
A) The seamless information integration that PLM provides.
B) Garnering outsourcing contracts of product parts.
Read the passage and answer the questions that follow on the basis of the information provided in the passage.
Microprocessor
Microprocessor (abbreviated as µP) is an electronic computer Central Processing Unit (CPU) made from
miniaturized transistors and other circuit elements on a single semiconductor Integrated Circuit (IC).
Before the advent of microprocessors, electronic CPUs were made from individual small-scale Integrated Circuits
containing the equivalent of only a few transistors. By integrating the processor onto one or a very few large-scale
Integrated Circuit packages (containing the equivalent of thousands or millions of discrete transistors), the cost of
processor power was greatly reduced.
The evolution of microprocessors has been known to follow Moore's Law when it comes to steadily increasing
performance over the years. This law suggests that the complexity of an Integrated Circuit with respect to minimum
component cost will double in about 18 months. From humble beginnings as the drivers for calculators, the continued
increase in power has led to the dominance of microprocessors over every other form of computer; every system from the
largest mainframes to the smallest handheld computers now uses a microprocessor at their core.
As with many advances in technology, the microprocessor was an idea whose time had come. Three projects arguably
delivered a complete microprocessor at about the same time: Intel's 4004, Texas Instruments' TMS 1000, and Garrett
AiResearch's Central Air Data Computer.
A computer-on-a-chip is a variation of a microprocessor, which combines the microprocessor core (CPU), some
memory, and I/O (input/output) lines, all on one chip. The proper meaning of microcomputer is a computer using a
(number of) microprocessor(s) as its CPU(s), while the concept of the patent is somewhat more similar to a
microcontroller.
16) Which of the following descriptions would NOT fit a microprocessor?
A) Electronic computer. B) Central Processing Unit.
C) Memory disk. D) A single integrated chip circuit.
17) Select the TRUE statement:
A) Microprocessors and computers on a chip are variations of each other.
B) Integration of processing power on chips has made processing power cheaper.
C) Before microprocessors, CPUs were not made from individual small scale ICs.
D) A microprocessor circuit only has transistors in it.
