LOTE
Our LOTE (Languages
Other Than English)
programme started this
week with Year 7
students being taught
either Maori or French
(they will do both languages throughout the
year) and Year 8’s being taught either
Japanese or German. In addition to this, we
have a composite group of students learning
Samoan with a teacher from Naenae College
and Mr Papas will be teaching Greek. If
your child has chosen to be in our cultural
group they will not take part in the
languages programme. They will be in the
hall with Miss Waikato during LOTE time.
Inter –Intermediate Athletics
Unfortunately this event was cancelled as
the Wellington City Council closed Newtown
Park due to poor ground conditions.
Hopefully it will be re-scheduled for Term
4.
Ki o Rahi Tournament
Ki o Rahi is a traditional Maori game played
with a small ball called a ki. Two teams of
seven players play on a circular field divided
into zones, and score points by touching
boundary markers and hitting a central
target. The game has been introduced to
schools across New Zealand. Last week we
had one team involved in a tournament held
at McEwan Park. The team did extremely
well winning the mixed section of the
tournament.
Earthquake Safety Procedures
Each Term we are required
to practice our
emergency evacuation
drill so students will
know what to do in the
event of an earthquake
or fire. Should there be
a large earthquake with considerable
property damage where parents may have
difficulty getting to school immediately;
students will be kept at school until they
are picked up by a designated caregiver.
Details of designated caregivers should
have been recorded by you on the enrolment
form. If these details have changed or you
wish to add other names then please see Ms
Browne in the office.
Board of Trustees
Our Board of Trustees meet on the third
Monday of each month and parents are
welcome to join us if they wish. The
members are:
Paul Alcock – Chairperson
Graeme Ross – Treasurer
Liz Pereira – Staff Rep.
Steve Black - Principal
Netball trials
Miss Waikato is currently
running trials for the
upcoming Saturday
morning
netball
competition. This year we
will be fielding eight
teams and to date we have coaches for our
top Year 7 and Year 8 teams. If you are
interested in coaching or managing a team
this year could you please contact Miss
Waikato on 939 – 8216.
Venture Class
We had forty-six applicants for Venture
Class. Unfortunately not all the students
met the criteria for entry to Venture Class
and as a result will remain in their
classrooms where their academic needs will
be better served through the provision of
group based literacy and numeracy
programmes. We will have two Venture
Classes this year – Term 2 and Term 3.
Parents will be notified on Friday of which
Venture Class their child will be in.
Australasian Tests
Several weeks ago the students were
invited to sign up for one or more of the
Australasian Exams. These are an initiative
of the Educational Testing Centre of the
University of New South Wales, Australia
and include the following exams (and related
costs): Maths ($7.50), English ($7.50),
Computer Skills ($7.50), Science ($7.50),
Spelling ($9.50) and Writing ($17.50).
The competitions take place each year in
schools throughout Australia, New Zealand
and the Pacific region. All students receive
a certificate and an individual results letter
indicating which questions they answered
correctly, which areas they may need more
development in, as well as the average mark
for New Zealand.
The deadline for entries is Friday 30 th
March. If you would like your child to sit
one or more of the exams, he/she will need
to request a permission slip from the school
office and take it home for completion. It
must be returned to school on or before the
due date, signed with the correct amount of
money enclosed.
Maternity Leave
Room 15 teacher Ms Melanie Searancke will
take maternity leave from the beginning of
Term 2 until the end of the year. We are
busy finding a replacement for her and
parents will be informed of the successful
applicant when the decision has been made.
We wish Ms Searancke all the very best for
the birth of her son and look forward to
having her back at school for the beginning
of the 2013 school year.
