M<strong>in</strong>ute 31: Appo<strong>in</strong>tment of Record<strong>in</strong>g Clerk<br />

We welcome the appo<strong>in</strong>tment by <strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for Suffer<strong>in</strong>gs on 2 December 2006 of Gillian<br />

Ashmore of K<strong>in</strong>gston & Wandsworth Monthly <strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong> as the twenty first Record<strong>in</strong>g Clerk.<br />

The appo<strong>in</strong>tment takes effect from 8 June <strong>2007</strong> on the retirement of Elsa Dicks, although<br />

Gillian will beg<strong>in</strong> work at Friends House on 1 June.<br />

M<strong>in</strong>ute 32: Amendments to Quaker faith & practice<br />

We agree the follow<strong>in</strong>g amendments <strong>in</strong> Quaker faith & practice, except for the first sentence<br />

of paragraph 9.12 which we refer back to <strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for Suffer<strong>in</strong>gs and Quaker Committee for<br />

Christian & Interfaith Relations, to improve clarity.<br />

a. Advice on prepar<strong>in</strong>g testimonies to the grace of God <strong>in</strong> the lives of deceased Friends.<br />

By m<strong>in</strong>ute 6, <strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for Suffer<strong>in</strong>gs held 2 December 2006 forwards an amendment to<br />

<strong>in</strong>sert the follow<strong>in</strong>g text with<strong>in</strong> section 4.26 (l<strong>in</strong>e 10 between ‘advice’ and ‘The<br />

testimony’ – third edition):<br />

<strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong>s decid<strong>in</strong>g to prepare a testimony, and particularly those Friends do<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

draft<strong>in</strong>g, are encouraged to consult the advice <strong>in</strong> the paper Testimonies to the grace of<br />

God <strong>in</strong> lives – an endur<strong>in</strong>g presence, available from the Record<strong>in</strong>g Clerk.<br />

b. Amendments to chapter 9 – Beyond Brita<strong>in</strong> <strong>Yearly</strong> <strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

These changes are necessary to reflect the changes <strong>in</strong> structure of Churches<br />

Together <strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong> & Ireland (CTBI) and are forwarded by m<strong>in</strong>ute S/07/03/ 11 of<br />

<strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for Suffer<strong>in</strong>gs held 31 March <strong>2007</strong>.<br />

BRITAIN YEARLY MEETING AND THE ECUMENICAL MOVEMENT<br />

9.08, 9.09, 9.10 as before. The current sections 9.11 and 9.12 to be replaced as<br />

below.<br />

9.11 After some reorganisation <strong>in</strong> 2006, the CTBI now holds two regular meet<strong>in</strong>gs:<br />

An annual general meet<strong>in</strong>g called the Senior Representative Forum, last<strong>in</strong>g 2-3<br />

days and attended by the adm<strong>in</strong>istrative heads and ecumenical officers of the<br />

churches; it provides an opportunity for those attend<strong>in</strong>g to meet and talk;<br />

A meet<strong>in</strong>g every two years for the “spiritual leaders” of each church to study,<br />

worship and talk together. This Summit of Church Leaders is held over a period of<br />

twenty four hours and provides a steer for the work of CTBI. Members of the<br />

Senior Representative Forum are also <strong>in</strong>vited to attend summit meet<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

It is a pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of CTBI that authority rema<strong>in</strong>s rooted <strong>in</strong> the decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g bodies of<br />

the member churches. ACTS, CTE and Cytûn have become more significant, and<br />

CTBI has now become their agency rather than their organisational superior.<br />

9.12 <strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for Suffer<strong>in</strong>gs appo<strong>in</strong>ts Brita<strong>in</strong> <strong>Yearly</strong> <strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong>’s representatives to CTBI and<br />

CTE. It has agreed <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple that Brita<strong>in</strong> <strong>Yearly</strong> <strong>Meet<strong>in</strong>g</strong> should be represented at<br />

CTBI as follows:<br />

a. at the Senior Representative Forum by the Record<strong>in</strong>g Clerk or a Quaker<br />

member of staff delegated by her/him;<br />
