and one of his elves.
Big Thanks
A big thank you to the many community
groups, individuals and companies who
kindly performed, visited and donated
presents to our hospitals. Your support
during the festive season is greatly
appreciated and really helps to put a
smile on the faces of our patients.
Small Change
Big Difference
This year we are asking our supporters to really
get behind us by donating small change to help
us make a big difference to our hospitals and the
patients we treat.
When it comes to fundraising many people feel
that unless they are able to make a large donation
they are unable to make a difference: this campaign
aims to dispel that myth because as the old saying
goes, look after the pennies and the pounds take care of
themselves.
Here at RMCH Charity we are grateful for any donations
that we receive and recognise, that collectively, pennies
and small change can soon add up to really help make a
difference to our patients.
Over the coming year we are looking to
place 500 collection tins throughout the
North West and we need your help to do
so. When filled with spare change, a
collection tin, on average, holds around £30
and if 500 tins were filled twice a year it
would raise a whopping £30,000!
If you know a shop or business in your local
community that may be willing to provide a home
for one of our collection tins, or if you could spare
a few hours a week to contact local organisations
to see whether they will take a collection tin
on our behalf, please contact a member of the
Charity team on 0161 276 4522.
Together we can
make a difference.
In the Community
Jenny’s Pennies
14-year-old Jenny from Prestwich continues to work
hard to make a difference by fundraising for research
into endocrine diseases at the children’s hospital. Jenny
supports research as she was diagnosed with a rare
endocrine condition, which means that her body could
begin to shut down if she receives a shock.
To date, Jenny has raised over £13,000 through music
evenings, coffee stalls, Christmas parties and her latest
venture of selling new bags. In addition her brother
Thomas recently proved he had a head for heights by
taking part in a skydive and donated his sponsorship
towards his sister’s fundraising efforts.
Louisa presents consultant
Naomi Davis with a cheque
for her Both Feet Forward
Fund at the hospital.
It all went Swimmingly!
Congratulations to 11-year-old Louisa on completing a
sponsored swim at Walkden Pool (Fit City) in Salford.
Louisa, who is a pupil at Manchester High School for Girls,
decided to swim 64 lengths, the equivalent of one mile,
following what she calls a ‘eureka moment’ on a bus!
Louisa raised over £38 which has been donated to
support children with clubfoot.
The Aimee Drew Trust
Ian Drew of the Aimee Drew Trust recently met with
Dr Arkwright to recognise the fundraising achieved by the
Aimee Drew Trust over the years. The Trust was set up in
memory of Aimee who had a rare immunology condition and
sadly lost her battle with lymphoma in 1997.
Since forming, shortly after Aimee’s death, the Aimee Drew
Trust has held many events including an ‘Allo ‘Allo themed
evening, head shaves and a 70s night to fundraise to
support the immunology department at the hospital.
The Trust has raised over £70,000 which has helped to
support research and the purchase of new equipment, such
as infusion pumps for use in the immunology clinic at the hospital.
Jenny sells her bags to help
make the pennies add up!
Ian presents the cheque to
immunology staff, including Dr
Arkwright, to mark the achievement
of the Aimee Drew Trust.
Corrie Come Dine with Me
Patron and former Coronation Street star Tupele
Dorgu recently appeared on Channel 4’s Come
Dine with Me Coronation Street special.
Tupele, who played Kelly Crabtree in the soap,
was joined by Phil Middlemiss (Des Barnes),
Julie Goodyear (Bet Lynch) and Ken Morley (Reg
Holdsworth) for four nights of fine dining.
Despite cooking up a treat for her guests, it was
Phil who took the crown and showed himself to
be a true gent by splitting the £1,000 winnings
between each contestant for their chosen charity, with
Tupele donating her share to the children’s hospital.
Ruby’s Winter Walk
After hearing that the daughter of a friend was
undergoing treatment on Ward 84 at the children’s
hospital for a rare type of cancer called
Rhabdomyosarcoma, Jamie Whittaker decided to use
his legs to support the work of the ward and organise a
fundraiser in honour of Ruby, now 19-months-old.
After placing a post on Facebook and receiving lots
of messages from people wishing to get involved, Jamie
organised ‘Ruby’s Winter Walk’. Jamie was joined by a staggering 600 well
wishers and supporters to walk four miles on a very cold winter’s morning.
Even comic Jason Manford, who is related to Ruby’s mum Adele, got involved.
The walk that started and ended in Debdale Park in Gorton raised over £16,000.
100 Miles for Franky
Dave Dean and friends recently ran 25
miles-a-day over four days to raise money for
the children’s hospital in memory of Dave’s son
Franky who died in 2008, aged two.
The group started in Blackpool and crossed
the finish line 100 miles later in Manchester’s
Whitworth Park, close to the children’s hospital.
Thanks to their hard work and determination,
Dave and his friends have raised over £8,200
to date and the money is still coming in!
Jason Manford with
organiser Jamie,
Ruby and family.
The runners mark their achievement by
posing for a celebratory picture!
Hoedown Raises £2,700
Sneaky Moon Line Dancing Club members Carol
Bates and Marilyn Bailey recently visited Royal
Manchester Children’s Hospital to present a cheque
for the proceeds of their line dance fundraiser held
at the John Alker Ex-Serviceman’s Club in Flixton.
The duo presented a cheque for over £2,700,
raised by the Urmston-based club, to Royal
Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity mascot
Humphrey. The line dancing evening was organised
by Carol and Marilyn along with fellow member
Lorraine Kennedy.
Winning Our Hearts and Minds
Over £25,000 was raised for the cardiology unit at the children’s
hospital recently thanks to the fantastic efforts of three friends
fundraising under the banner ‘Hearts and Minds’.
The Hearts and Minds challenge saw many events taking place
including a golf day and a bike ride that saw participants cycling
400 miles from Mizen Head – the most southern point in Ireland
– to the most northern point, Malin Head, in just four days.
Cyclists celebrate with
Keith Duffy.
The 2010 challenge came to a close with a celebration charity ball
held at Lancashire County Cricket Ground’s, The Point, which was attended by over
700 guests.
More events are planned for 2011, with the hope of beating last year’s total!
Celebrate and Donate
We have recently launched ‘Give in Celebration’ cards, which are a personal,
meaningful way of thanking your guests for celebrating your special occasion.
Suitable for place settings at weddings, civil partnerships, christenings or any other
celebration, the personalised cards show that the host has made a donation to the
children’s hospital instead of a more traditional ‘favour’ or small gift for their guest.
For those hosts who wish to give their guest a keepsake to remind them of their
donation, children’s hospital pin badges or ‘trolley’ key rings may be purchased
from the Charity team and attached to the cards.
TV’s Theo Lends a Hand
TV personality and BBC dragon Theo Paphitis is once
again backing a campaign that asks small to medium-sized
businesses to support the children’s hospital by getting
involved in the Many Hands Campaign.
Theo joined over 100 guests at the campaign launch which
was hosted by BBC presenter and journalist, Ranvir Singh
at Room Restaurant in Manchester. Theo took to the
stage to ask companies to ‘think outside the box’ in the
challenge to each raise £1,000 over the next 12 months
and to tell guests how by coming together they can be
part of something special which will directly benefit
patients at the hospital.
As well as offering great networking opportunities
to the companies taking part, the campaign is also
offering ‘Many Handers’ the chance to enter the Many
Hands Award, with the winner receiving one day’s free
coaching from leading business coach Nick Robinson,
as well as the opportunity to meet with Theo.
In the current economic climate we know it can be hard
for businesses to make the impact they want to a charity –
the Many Hands Campaign is a great way for companies to
come together and fundraise towards one goal.
The campaign is kindly being supported by
thebusinessdesk.com, Journey9 and Montpelier
Chartered Accountants - leading advisers to SMEs.
Manchester City Players Play Out
City stars and officials got the chance to see firsthand the
difference that the Club’s support has made to patients at
Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital when they visited
the hospital for the official opening of the Manchester City
Football Club-funded outdoor play area.
Carlos Tevez, Patrick Vieira and Joe Hart joined patients
and their families at the hospital for a party in the new
play area, which was formally opened by Manchester
City FC Chief Executive Garry Cook and Maurice
Watkins, Chairman of Royal Manchester Children’s
Hospital Charity’s Fundraising Board.
The opening also provided the perfect opportunity for
Manchester City to announce that the children’s hospital
would continue to receive support from the Club and
their fans in the 2010/11 season, as one of the Club’s
nominated charities.
The Club has pledged to donate
£25,000 to fund the production of an
animated DVD which will be used as
a tool to prepare patients and their
families about what to expect when
they are preparing for a planned
Fashion Aid
Thanks to the hard work of staff from GAP, Marks &
Spencer, John Lewis and The Trafford Centre the first ever
charity boutique was a resounding success.
The exclusive boutique – named Fashion Aid – was open
for one weekend only at The Trafford Centre, and offered
shoppers the chance to grab a bargain from leading
retailers who had kindly donated clothes and accessories.
With items such as Cath Kidston bags up for grabs,
the store raised over £10,000 which GAP very kindly
match funded resulting in over £21,000 being donated
to the hospital.
Premex Donates
Premex employee Hayley Davies said thank you recently for
treatment her son has been receiving at Royal Manchester
Children’s Hospital. Hayley’s son has a rare condition, known as
congenital hyperinsulinism, which causes low blood sugars in
babies and children.
Hayley wanted to thank the Northern Congenital Hyperinsulinism
Service (NORCHI), based at the hospital, by raising money to help
make a difference to other patients with the same condition.
Over the course of 2010, Premex employees organised a number
of events and raised over £1,920 which the company has match
funded meaning that a fantastic total of £3,840 has been donated.
Bruntwood, the family-owned commercial property
company, have donated £510,000 to Royal
Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity, smashing
their original target of £500,000.
In 2005, the staff of Bruntwood made a pledge to raise
£500,000 for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and,
over the last five years, with the support of their suppliers
and customers, have been working hard to achieve this goal.
They have undertaken a wide variety of activities including
cycling over 25,000 miles, baking cakes, swapping clothes
and jumping out of airplanes, to mention but a few,
to meet this target.
Teddy
Toddle
Over 30 nurseries and play groups from across the
region took part in our 2010 Teddy Toddle, which saw
two lucky groups receiving a visit from Humphrey.
Each organisation that registered to take part in the
short sponsored walk was entered into a free prize draw
to win a visit from our mascot Humphrey with Brinnington
Sure Start Children’s Centre in Stockport and Rockwood
Nursery School in Burnley being the lucky winners.
Humphrey visited both nurseries, walking round Brinnington Park in Stockport and
then joining in the fun with the different nursery classes in Burnley.
Thank you to all of the nurseries, crèches and play groups that took part
and helped us to raise over £7,250.
Teddy Toddle is now back for a second year and you can join in the fun of a short
sponsored walk to help us make a difference to our patients.
We are once again asking nurseries, crèches and play groups to get involved by
organising their very own short sponsored walk for toddlers and pre schoolers on
or around Wednesday 11 May.
Any organisation that registers to take part in The Teddy Toddle before 15 April
will be entered in to a free prize draw to receive a visit from Humphrey on Teddy
Toddle Day.
All organisations and groups that register, regardless of date, will receive a free
Teddy Toddle pack which will include stickers, sponsor forms, balloons and
certificates, as well as activity sheets for hildren.
If you are unable to take part in or organise your own
Teddy Toddle then why not
pop along to the Charity’s
Project Focus
Home from Home at Saint Mary’s
We are supporting a project to
refurbish the Midwifery Led Unit
(MLU) at Saint’s Mary’s Hospital to
provide women with a more homelike
environment. Research amongst
our patients suggests that although
women choose to have their baby
in hospital they want a more “homefrom-home
environment”.
Evidence also suggests the homelike
environment is associated with
less need for pain relief in labour,
less medical intervention and greater
satisfaction with care.
Our aim is to soften the environment
with textures and lighting to make
the rooms less clinical and more
warm and inviting. We are also raising
money to purchase an additional
Birthing Pool
birthing pool to give more patients the
option to birth in water.
We are also hoping to purchase
additional equipment for the MLU
such as birthing balls, birthing bean
bags, supportive seats, a birthing
Water Aids Recovery
The therapy and dietetic department at the children’s hospital provides up-to-date
specialist services to children and young people throughout the North West with
varying abilities. One of the areas within this speciality is the Hydrotherapy area
which helps a child’s rehabilitation and recovery following injury or illness and
provides therapeutic procedures.
We would like to ensure that our first class paediatric Hydrotherapy area is provided
in a child-friendly environment that creates a feeling of wellbeing, calm and fun
whilst also helping recovery and lessen the stress associated with being ill.
We want to make the Hydrotherapy pool area more child-friendly using visual and
audio techniques from water and aquarium-themed art work to sound art. Providing
rehabilitation in a less clinical environment will aid a child in their treatment making
it more interactive and improving the delivery of care to children with complex
medical and social needs.
An illustration of how the
unit could look.
With the help of charitable donations we will be able to equip this area
with the latest therapeutic lighting, visuals and sound technology.
Our vision for how this unit could look can be seen in the
images at the top of this page. The cost of ensuring our young
patients benefit even more from this specialised treatment
in a less clinical environment is £300,000.
Breathe Easy
Thanks to a donation from the
Freddie McGuire Trust, patients on
the paediatric intensive care unit are
already benefiting from a piece of
equipment that provides respiratory
support, helping us to provide the right
care at the right time to critically ill
children.
The Optiflow is a non-invasive piece of
equipment that administers humidified
oxygen at pressure to children or
babies via a face-mask or nasal
cannula (tube into the nose).
To find out more about how you can get involved and
support the Hydrotherapy project please contact a
member of the Charity team on 0161 276 4522.
This form of respiratory support helps
to reduce the irritation of the airways
plus, compared to other ventilators
there is less equipment around the
patient lessening the psychological
and emotional stress for our patients
and their families.
The Optiflow
also helps to
make feeding and
cuddles easier, all
helping to make
a difference to
the treatment and
care our critically ill
patients receive.
Celebrities Got a Grilling
Saint Mary’s Hospital
Mr Aziz officially opens
the sitting room.
Celebrity Grilling: The Sequel, hosted by Angus Deayton,
saw two celebrity teams going head-to-head to cook
signature dishes, shake things up behind the bar and
serve up a unique experience to guests at Restaurant
Bar and Grill in Manchester. As well as trying to impress
guests with their skills, the two teams had to meet
the approval of celebrity Head Chef, Something for the
Weekend’s, Simon Rimmer.
Actor John Thomson captained Team Fork, which also
included Hollyoaks stars Nick Pickard and Ashley Taylor-Dawson, Coronation
Street stars Samia Smith and Brooke Vincent and former Hollyoaks actress
and TV presenter Terri Dwyer.
But it was former England and Liverpool footballer John Barnes who led Team
Knife to victory on the night! John was joined by Sale Sharks and Welsh Rugby
International Dwayne Peel, fellow Sale Sharks and England Rugby International
Charlie Hodgson, Bolton Wanderers footballer Ivan Klasnić, Blackburn Rovers
footballer David Dunn and Hollyoaks stars Jessica Fox and Rachel Hassan. On the
night John was also offered £1,000 to perform his famous World in Motion rap – and
he didn’t disappoint. The former Liverpool winger rose to the challenge and helped
the event to raise more than £50,000 for the children’s hospital.
Thanks also to patron Cole Page for providing the
pre dinner entertainment and Key 103’s Mike Toolan
and Hugh Ferris who really got the auction going.
Aziz Family’s Gift to NICU
Thanks to the Aziz family the new parents sitting
room on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at
Saint Mary’s Hospital is a welcoming and homely
place to take a break from the unit and to chat to
other parents who have a child in the unit.
Alizay Aziz was treated on the unit so the family held a fundraising birthday
party. After speaking to the family support group they decided to buy comfy
leather sofas, lamps, pictures and shelves with the money they had raised.
Bag Packing for Neonatal
Sally Barber and colleagues from the neonatal intensive care unit developmental care
team decided to go the extra mile recently to make a difference to their patients.
The group organised a Sunday bag pack at Tesco in Portwood to raise money towards
developmental equipment.
After helping shoppers to fill their bags they raised over £460 which will be used to
buy positioning aids such as a snuggle up nest which gives tiny babies the type of
boundaries that they had in the womb.
Supporter’s Letter
Dear Charity Team
Our grandson was born 10 weeks premature at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Without the
specialist care given to him by the unit, both before and long after his birth, along
with much love, he would not be the thriving baby boy he is today. My husband
recently celebrated his 65th birthday and, as a thank you, asked for donations to the
unit instead of gifts.
The amount raised is just a small thank you to all the wonderful staff who gave so
much support, love and care to our family during those long weeks of worry and
anxiety.
Many Thanks
Mr and Mrs Johnson
Jive Night Raises £600
A jive night at Sale Masonic Hall helped to raise money for the children’s Cleft Lip
and Palate service at the dental hospital.
The event, organised by the It’s Only Rock and Roll group saw around 150 guests
enjoying a 50s night with a live performance from Colin Paul and the Persuaders.
Following an auction, including a jive shirt that went for a £100, donations from the
group and Colin Paul donating the proceeds from the sale of his CD on the night,
the event raised over £600.
Jivers Then Got on Their Bikes
Plus, nine family and friends of singer Colin Paul decided
to take on the challenge of a Manchester to Blackpool
bike ride. After cycling 64 miles the group raised over
£700 with pedal power for the Cleft Lip and Palate fund.
Despite finding it hard going, the group are thinking about
doing it all again, hoping to beat their times from last year!
Infants’ Charity Fun Run
Around 150 pupils from Stamford Park Infant School in Hale took to the school field on a
bright Sunday morning recently to help raise money for Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.
As a thank you for treatment one of their Year 2 pupils received at the hospital, the school
and its parent support group decided to ask pupils to raise sponsorship to take part in
their annual fun run.
After each year group completed ten laps of the
school field, pupils were awarded a certificate of
achievement. Thanks to their fun run
fundraising the school raised over
£900 for the eye hospital.
Royal Infirmary
All Aboard!
Madeline Kelly, the daughter of
a patient on the cardiac ward at
Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI)
nominated the ward to be one of seven
beneficiaries of the Orient Express Northern Belle Charity Dinner.
The seven carriages on the Northern Belle train each represented one of the chosen
charities and it was the Duart Carriage in support of the MRI that sold out first.
Passengers departed from Manchester and Crewe, enjoying spectacular cuisine
with a sumptuous five course dinner and elegant entertainment, helping to raise
over £3,000 for the cardiac ward.
Butterfly Ball Spreads its Wings
The inaugural Butterfly Ball held in support of Ward
44’s CALLM (Caring for Adults with Leukaemia,
Lymphoma and Myeloma) Fund at Manchester
Royal Infirmary was a huge success with over
70 guests attending the event at the Thistle
Hotel in Manchester.
After a bucks fizz reception, guests took part
in a guess the weight of the giant cupcake
competition for a chance to win a Pandora
bracelet and the very same giant cupcake!
With two corrects answers being guessed the
winner was decided by a ‘dance off’ with hip
wiggling and strange dance moves.
The Butterfly Ball, along with challenge
events and support from Ward 44 patients,
has helped to raise over £10,000 which will
be used to improve the patient experience
on the ward.
