2006 Year-End Message 17
In 2006, YNHH started the Stamp out Stroke (SOS) team to serve the
community by screening and educating individuals about stroke risk factors,
warning signs and risk reduction. SOS nurses from YNHH participated in 10
area community events, where they screened over 450 people.
YNHH reached over 4,000 school-children with services and programs
related to health promotion and education, career exploration and volunteer
service opportunities. YNHH also continued to operate seven school-based
health centers that received over 9,000 student visits.
Once again, YNHH’s CEO chaired the Greater New Haven United Way’s
Day of Caring. YNHH employees donated more than $236,000 to the campaign,
and participated in a number of projects to support the community, and
donated nearly 24,000 school supplies to local students.
Additionally, this year YNHH agreed to provide even greater community
benefits to the city of New Haven including a commitment to hire 100 New
Haven residents a year; establish a citizens’ advisory committee to track
YNHH’s free care policies; invest at least $100,000 per year for five years in
a career ladder program for local residents; create three new $1,500 annual
scholarships for high school students pursuing health care; contribute
$100,000 per year for five years to the Mayor’s Youth Initiative and payment
of a voluntary tax to the city. The Hospital also agreed to improve 12 traffic
signals in the area around the cancer hospital site and work with contractors
to set aside up to 15 trade apprenticeships for residents of the Hill and New
Haven.
In a similar partnership with the Hill Development Corporation (HDC),
YNHH is supporting a free summer day camp; funding $50,000 per year for
three years for a community liaison to address community access to construction
jobs; providing $50,000 of new books for the Courtland S. Wilson
Library branch that recently opened in the Hill; donating $40,000 per year for
three years to provide more day care in the Hill; providing financial and technical
assistance of $50,000 per year for youth programs in the Hill; and contributing
$400,000 per year for three years to support Hill community groups
and programs. Meanwhile, YNHH provided HDC with $150,000 for a period of
three years to create a home rehabilitation program to benefit Hill residents.
YNHH also presented a check for $65,000 to Lincoln-Bassett School in New
Haven to support a language and literacy program that includes a program
coordinator, five certified teachers and 15 teaching assistants as well as professional
development program materials, technology software and general
classroom supplies.
The Cancer Hospital
Last year, the Yale-New Haven cancer hospital received full regulatory
approval from the Connecticut Office of Health Care Access and financing
approval from Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority.
In March 2006, after an agreement with the city of New Haven which
included a community benefits agreement and a separate agreement with
Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which outlined a process
intended to result in a National Labor Relations Board-supervised secret ballot
election, YNHH received regulatory approval for the cancer hospital from
the city of New Haven.
An exuberant groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 6, 2006
with 260 people in attendance, including state and local elected officials,
