18 2006 Year-End Message mal groundbreaking was preceded by an employee celebration of the start of the project. The cancer hospital is expected to be completed in the fall of 2009. Other Highlights Despite declining governmental reimbursements, a tougher commercial marketplace and increased free and charity care, YNHH achieved positive financial performance in 2006 with great patient demand and careful expense management. YNHH ended the year with a $36 million operating gain – which will help support clinical programs, equipment and facilities investments, the new Cancer Hospital and care of the poor and uninsured. In 2006, YNHH provided more than $79 million to offset Medicaid underpayments and $31 million in free and uncompensated care (at cost). YNHH benefited in many ways from its membership in the Yale New Haven Health System, including clinical quality and patient safety measurement and tracking guidance, cost savings through System-wide supply chain management and economies of scale, revenue enhancement initiatives, emergency preparedness and corporate compliance structures. YNHH’s strong performance reflects the extraordinary dedication and focus of its employees, clinical staff, management team and the support and guidance of the Board of Trustees. In October 2005, Marvin K. Lender was reelected as chairman of the Board of Trustees and Joseph R. Crespo became chair-elect. In October, 2006, Crespo was elected as chair. New clinical chiefs this year included: Brian Smith, M.D., laboratory medicine; James Tsai, M.D., ophthalmology; and Fred Volkmar, M.D., child psychiatry. Additionally, two key section chief appointments were Gail D’Onofrio, M.D., emergency department; and Kim Davis, M.D., trauma and surgical critical care. In her first full year as president and chief executive officer, Marna P. Borgstrom was joined in May by Richard D’Aquila, executive vice president and chief operating officer. For the past six years, Mr. D’Aquila was senior vice president and chief operating officer of New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Other notable administrative appointments included Richard Stahl, M.D., as vice president, ambulatory services; Diane Vorio, vice president, patient services; and Richard Lisitano, vice president, patient services. We view this year’s performance as a testament to the hard work, focus and commitment of Yale-New Haven Hospital’s employees, medical staff, volunteers and the unfailing leadership of its Board of Trustees. Sincerely, Marna Borgstrom Richard D’Aquila President and CEO Executive Vice President and COO Marvin Lender Peter N. Herbert, M.D. Chairman, Board of Trustees Chief of Staff
