Yale-New Haven Hospital remains one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers and the
only hospital in Connecticut to be consistently named to the prestigious list of the nation’s best
hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. YNHH is highly regarded for its cardiac care and obstetrics/
gynecology services, and the Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric
Hospital have ranked among the best in the country.
But perhaps what defined Yale-New Haven Hospital in 2006, more than any other area,
was its quest to build a new cancer hospital – to provide a world-class setting for its worldrenowned
cancer services.
While the debate around the cancer hospital’s approval lingered, the hospital won final
approval in the spring of 2006 to build this 497,000-square-foot facility that will rival any in
the world.
The community rallied around the project. Hundreds of people – patients, family members,
employees, physicians, nurses, advocates, some elected officials – came forth to express their
support for the new cancer hospital, and articulate the need for the project. People around town,
and around the state, began to show their support by wearing blue Yale-New Haven cancer
center bracelets.
The passion and the pleas of so many people are still echoing. They were strong,
emotional and persuasive. They were cancer survivors, people who had lost a loved one to
cancer, and concerned citizens. In many ways, it was because of them that Yale-New Haven
Hospital broke ground for the new cancer hospital in September 2006.
In Yale-New Haven Hospital’s 2006 annual report, you will read the stories of some of
those who testified in support of Yale-New Haven’s new cancer hospital. This annual report is
dedicated to everyone who testified and everyone who helped.
