Auxiliary Gives New Shuttle Vehicle
Beginning in January 2001, the campus shuttle has a
new vehicle and extended hours to provide transportation
to residents. In December a celebration was
held for the volunteer drivers who make it possible
for the shuttle to run. At that event the Landis Homes
Auxiliary President Janet Horst handed over the keys
to a 1992 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon to Landis
Homes President Ed Longenecker.
In addition to many volunteer endeavors, the Landis
Homes Auxiliary uses funds raised at the Annual Fellowship
Day in September for projects to benefit the
650 residents who live on campus. For this year the
project is the new shuttle vehicle.
The shuttle service, which first began in March
2000, has operated primarily afternoons since its initiation.
Residents have learned to depend on it for
transportation from one part of the campus to an-
A number of timely events culminated in the purchase
of the new vehicle. A resident and staff committee
was working throughout the past year on ideas for
making the campus more accessible. It didn’t take
long to realize extended shuttle transportation to the
morning hours was necessary. At that time the same
vehicle used for shuttle service in the afternoons was
also used for the post office run every morning. The
What is at the Core?
In a seminar some months ago, several
Landis Homes staff persons were challenged
by the questions, “What is it that
defines your organization? What is
unique about Landis Homes?” We were
encouraged to identify those qualities and
to strengthen them. During this past
summer and fall employees were asked to
help management identify these values.
Because of the tight labor market,
Landis Homes competes with other Lancaster
area businesses for employees. We
depend on a strong work force to provide
continued excellent service. Why does
anyone choose to work for Landis Homes
and stay committed to a life of service
with us? While the pay scale is important,
it is not the only motivator. Employee satisfaction
also has to do with an environment
that values each employee, recognizes
their key contributions and provides
an opportunity for growth.
Through numerous revisions, these
ideas were finally condensed into 7 val-
Core Values
ues. We have
chosen to call
these qualities
our Core Values
because they are
at “the heart and
soul” of everything
we do. This
list was presented
to the
Board on January
23 for final
approval. It will be used for staff training
in late January and February as well as
ongoing orientation for all employees.
We encourage you to examine the Core
Values carefully. They are meant to help
all of us recognize which values not only
make Landis Homes remarkable today
but will also lead us into the new century.
We commit to these values as we honor God in our service to others.
• Compassion • Excellence •
• Integrity • Stewardship •
Hollinger Print Honored in Washington
A painting by Dottie Hollinger, resident of Lancaster
House, was selected for the senior artist’s
collection to be permanently displayed in AAHSA’s
Dorothy Hollinger, seated, is shown with husband Jay and
her limited edition print The Amish Homestead.
the Aging) new headquarters building in Washington,
D.C. A print of her oil painting The Amish
Homestead is among 200 pieces chosen from among
700 works submitted by senior artists from all
across the nation.
Dottie and Landis Homes entered the painting in an
AAHSA-sponsored competition. Designed to celebrate
the creativity of older persons, the juried contest
called for original works of art in a variety of mediums.
“It’s inspiring to see such high level talent and
expression flourishing in our member communities,”
said Sharon Sullivan, AAHSA’s assistant vice president
of education and conferences and the contest’s
coordinator.
Limited edition prints of The Amish Homestead are
available for purchase by contacting Dottie’s husband,
Jay Hollinger, at 717-569-1157. Proceeds of the print
sales go to The Heritage Gift Fund, established to enhance
the quality of care by expanding therapeutic art
and music programs in The Heritage Special Care
Center for persons with memory loss.
Landis Homes has been blessed with committed and
skilled board members. At its last meeting, President
Glen Hostetler welcomed two new members, Teresa
Long and Luke Shank.
Teresa Long comes to us as a Senior Administrator
in HCR Manor Care in Lancaster, a 173-bed skilled
nursing facility. A licensed nursing home administrator
and registered nurse, she has worked in many settings
including missions, home health and long term
care. She has served as a board member of the Nightingale
Awards of PA, South Central PA Alzheimer’s
Association and Sonshine Child Day Care. She is a
graduate of Eastern Mennonite College. She and her
husband, Ray, attend Neffsville Mennonite Church
and are the parents of two adult children.
Luke Shank, a cottage resident, has served on the
Residents’ Council four years, three of these as Council
Chair. He is a graduate of Eastern Mennonite College
with a B.A. in Bible and of Tuskegee Institute
with an M. Ed. in Science Education. He taught at
Lancaster Mennonite High School for 10 years,
worked primarily in accounting with Victor F.
Weaver for 21 years and worked for six years at Tabor
Community Services, Lancaster. He is the father
of 4 children and a member of East Chestnut Street
Mennonite Church.
Two outgoing board members were honored during
the Annual Staff and Board Banquet in Decem-
ber. Lois Good served nine years on the board, including
five years as Board Secretary. Paul Dagen
served two years as a resident board member.
Board President Glen Hostetler expressed appreciation
to Lois and Paul for their combined years of
service and presented each with a framed photograph
of the board.
Get to Know the Auxiliary President
Janet Horst is the Landis Homes Auxiliary president
for the calendar years 2000 and 2001, so she is
currently in the middle of her two-year term. She was
vice president for two years prior, so has had many
experiences with Landis Homes. In addition to her
help in planning annual events on campus such as the
Valentine Hymn Sing, the Strawberry Social and the
Chicken Barbecue at Fellowship Day, Janet also represents
Landis Homes at the Mennonite Women
Council meetings. Her greatest challenge as vice
president she shared involved the chicken barbecue.
It was difficult “to find enough male volunteers to
work in the ‘pit’ on Fellowship Day,” she said.
Janet is a member of Weaverland Mennonite
church, where she is involved with leading the
women’s and children’s Sunday School classes and is
Auxiliary, cont. from page 1
perience,” says Dollie who has provided services to
Landis Homes residents since 1990.
This is a free service and many residents find her
counsel and service to be very helpful in making informed
decisions. The services include the following:
• Free professional insurance counseling
• Evaluation of present coverage
• Assistance with processing claims.
Dollie’s office hours are Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. or by appointment. Her office is located at
the West Main Entrance of Landis Homes. You are
welcome to call Dollie at Landis Homes at 569-3271
or at her home at 239-0556.
in a weekly prayer group. Her community involvements
include being a volunteer with the Literacy
Council and with Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services.
Janet and her husband Glenn live in New Holland
and are the parents of four young adult children.
Janet says, “The most rewarding aspect of my job so
far is in seeing how much the residents enjoy the activities
the auxiliary sponsors each year. I also receive
a great deal of satisfaction from seeing the funds
raised by the annual chicken barbecue used for
worthwhile projects for the residents.”
suggestion was made to the auxiliary to purchase a vehicle
exclusively for shuttle use, including the extended
hours.
At the celebration, Activities Director Tina Mast
Burnett said, “We are already experiencing the good
gifts the shuttle has brought to resident life at Landis
Homes. (Residents have transportation) across campus
for therapy and medical appointments, to get to
the bank and barbershop, to spend time in the game
room or one of the libraries, to use the exercise room
or to swim in the pool. And I think most important, to
take people who are separated from family and
friends across the campus to visit their loved ones as
often as possible. The new vehicle will only increase
these benefits.”
Landis Homes Auxiliary president Janet Horst presents keys
to the new shuttle vehicle to Ed Longenecker.
Residents Assist University
As Ella Weaver, age 89, stuffed materials into an envelope
and put it in a stack, Marian Lichty, 91,
“painted” an envelope with water and brush and
sealed it. Stacks of sealed envelopes were then
counted by other volunteers into groups of 50 or 100
and boxed to send to Eastern Mennonite University
(EMU), Lancaster Campus, for mailing. The place
was Landis Homes activity room and the volunteers
were primarily residents who live on the campus.
Most of the residents live in the assisted living and
healthcare areas.
“It was a great activity,” said Activity Director Tina
Mast Burnett. “As people worked some talked about
their own EMU experiences or family connections
there.” Burnett, whose son is at EMU main campus in
Harrisonburg, VA, reported about 30 to 35 persons
came to work on the 6000-piece mailing on three different
days. Some persons came eagerly to help for a
second or even a third time. “There was something
everyone could do, and it was a nice atmosphere for
visiting together, while working together.”
Irma Brubaker, seated, takes advantage of the assistance of
new staff person Andrea Houck, a certified fitness trainer,
helped with the Eastern Mennonite University bulk mailing.
Lend a Hand
When Evanna Hess was director of Adult Day Services
she wrote a poem entitled “Come With Me” that
depicted vividly the plight of persons with Alzheimer’s.
It was read at the groundbreaking service for The
Heritage special care center in August 1997.
A short segment of that work reads:
“Once the light shone on you. Now you are shrouded
in fog.
Once there was no task too big - now I am putting the
spoon in your mouth.
Once the world listened and looked to you - now uttered
sounds are lost in meaning.
Once you walked as owner upon the land - now you
step with fear and hesitation.
Come with me and we will find a place to rest,
a quiet place of calm.
I will be your friend,
your wife and mother,
your husband and child.”
Since The Heritage opened, resident volunteers
now help with quite a few tasks including mealtimes.
They can be found setting tables, making a pot of coffee,
buttering bread and serving food. A few even help
residents eat their meals. Having that extra pair of
hands at mealtime is such a help to the staff, freeing
them to meet other important needs.
Our goal is to supply one volunteer for one hour
each mealtime. If you live reasonably close and feel
you could lend a hand in this way, please call Helen
or Joyce at 509-5409.
Long-time Staff Recognized
A banquet was held at Yoder’s Restaurant on December
7 to express appreciation to all employees for
the service each provides to enhance the quality of life
at Landis Homes. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal
and time of fellowship. The group enjoyed some musical
entertainment by the Mast family. Two Board
Ed Longenecker presents a certificate to Rachel Brubaker for
35 years of employment as a nurse at Landis Homes.
members, Lois Good and Paul Dagen, were recognized
for their service along with the 37 employees
listed below. We also enjoyed a pictorial presentation
entitled “The People Who Serve,” a tribute to all
Landis Homes employees for the many ways in which
they serve others.
The special focus of the evening was the recognition
of 37 Landis Homes staff persons who reached employment
milestones. Receiving an award for 35 years
of service was Rachel Brubaker who has worked as a
nurse at the community since 1965. Landis Homes
only began operations in 1964, which means Rachel is
the first employee to reach this employment milestone.
Rachel and her husband Luke have been cottage residents
on the campus since 1995. Rachel said, “I had no
idea I would work here this long, but I really enjoy it.”
We are blessed to have a large number of dedicated
staff who have committed to serving for a significant
period of time. This brings stability and quality to the
care that is provided for residents and clients of
Landis Homes. As you have opportunity you may
wish to express your appreciation and thanks to each
one as well. Following is a list of those who were
Important Matters for the New Year
In the beginning of a new year
we take time to reflect on the
past year as we look forward to
the one before us. Some of us
may even make lists or set goals
to work on important matters we
may have neglected the past 12
months and set out with a positive
attitude to accomplish them
in the next 12 months.
Making a new will or updating
an old will may be one of those matters. There is no
law that requires you to make a will or other estate
plans but there are laws that dictate what happens to
your property if you don’t. Through a valid will, trust
or other arrangements such as life insurance and retirement
beneficiary designations you can decide who
will receive your estate or property.
Bering Receives NHA License
Our congratulations to Eva
Bering who received her
Nursing Home
Administrator’s license following
several months of
preparation for the State
Board exam. The computer
examination covers all aspects
of long-term care administration
including management,
resident care, nutrition,
housekeeping, government, finance,
personnel management,
life safety and both federal
and state regulations.
Eva Bering
Eva came to Landis Homes
one year ago with a background in acute care, formerly
as Vice-President of Operations at Susquehanna
Health System in Williamsport. She is a registered
nurse and holds a master’s degree in both health care
administration and in nursing administration.
As Vice-President of Clinical Services at Landis
Homes, Eva oversees the areas of Healthcare, As-
Luminary Lights Lookout
If you purchased a potpourri light from Adult Day
Services, please note the following precautions. The
lights should be lit for only short periods of time and
should not be left unattended. Persons wanting a refund
may return them to the ADS Eden West center.
Faith Hoover
Director of Adult Day Services and Special Care
There is no law that
requires you to make a will
or other estate plans but
there are laws that dictate
what happens to your
property if you don’t.
When you plan your estate you
can provide for your relatives according
to your desires and their
needs. You can also remember
the friends and charitable organizations
you felt close to throughout
your life.
After considering your estate
plan, contact your attorney to
have your will and other plans
put in proper legal form. “Do-ityourself”
wills may or may not be valid.
Once you have either made a new will or updated
an existing one, you may cross that off of your To Do
List for 2001 and have a truly good year. For further
information contact our office at (717) 509-5490.
Cathy Yoder
Director of Development
Eva comments that she appreciates the opportunity
to work at Landis Homes and has a great deal of respect
for the residents we serve and the staff that provide
the care.
