Dragon Boat Racing and the Festival
Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest growing water activity in
Britain today - as well as the most fun! Up to 10 people paddle each 30’ boat with a
drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the tail steering a straight course. No
previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit!
Gable Events has joined with Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People to bring
you the fifth dragon boat challenge to be staged as part of the Nottingham Riverside
Festival. The Dragon Boat Challenge takes place on Sunday 4th August 2013 and up to 50
crews are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course on the River Trent at the
Victoria Embankment watched by thousands of spectators. The Riverside Festival is one of
Nottingham’s largest family events and includes a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music,
dance, crafts and food from around the world. The Dragon Boat Challenge is supported by
City Life magazine and is set to be one of the highlights of the 2013 Riverside Festival
staged by Nottingham City Council.
Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People
Just like everyone else, local life-limited children need a place to play, laugh and love life. A
place where they and their families are cared for and supported.
Since 1994, Rainbows has opened its doors and heart to those children and the people
who love them most. And now more than ever, they need your help to keep on bringing
care and happiness to their children and families. Their incredible team of people help
relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, support parents and siblings through their
bereavement and care for children until the end.
Katie Baxter, Events Manager at Rainbows, says, “Teams joining the Dragon Boat
Challenge will help Rainbows care for over 230 families every year and offer bereavement
support to more than twice that number. Whilst the children are with us, we help them to
have fun and really enjoy life. The truth is that we can’t do our work without the help of
people like you – and we know that together we can bring more love, smiles and laughter
to our children and families.”
