Dear Reader,
Drive along any main artery that passes
through the capital and you will see
construction in progress. The buildings
being built are no doubt luxurious and top
of their class, but for the younger, less
financially endowed people of this country,
finding property is still a difficult task. That
is why we were delighted to hear about a
residential development from the Al Khonji
brothers who made it their mission to
provide affordable luxurious property to
young local professionals. In this issue, we
speak to Mr. Mohammed Al Khonji about
the development of AQAR’s latest complex
that will provide much needed relief to
house hunters in Muscat.
Also in this issue, we take you on a venture
through an Al Sharqiyah sandstorm,
WINNING
LETTER
GIVE US DIGNITY, NOT MEDIA
HYPE
Dear Y Readers,
I refer the letter “Is the World a safer place after Osama Bin Laden’s death ?”
(Issue-173) and would like to tell this innocent school child that the death of
Osama Bin Laden can certainly get some kind of instant political mileage to
some of the politicians but for sure the world can never be safer and peaceful
place even with out Osama Bin Laden or several other wanted Alqaeda's men
like him unless the root cause of this kind of unrest is nipped in the bud. It has
become a 'might is right' king of world once again today. Lies are repeated again
and again in the media till finally it is accepted as truth. To be very precise, so far
American administration has never shown any concrete proof to United nations
or to the world media to prove their claim of the involvement of Osama Bin
Laden or Al Qaeda behind 9/11 attack. In my opinion Al Qaeda has never been
so highly skilled to execute such kind of disastrous plans in such a fool proof
manner and that too in a country like United States which is technologically the
most advanced country in the world. It is needless to mention that there was
a time when the root cause of the blood shed around the world was said to be
Isarael’s illegal occupation of Palestine but the double standards of Nato,US &
it’s allies and the invasion of Iraq on fabricated grounds have opened several
new flood gates in the Asia and middle east region. They might open many
more as well in times to come. The World can never be a safer place to live
unless each and every individual living on this planet is insured of dignity, social
justice, unconditional love and acceptance of each other among the society .
The world powers have to treat all creed and nations at par and no double
standards. Let us pray that our Creator guide us towards the right path of social
justice, humanity and peace so that we can lead a fearless and happy life on
this beautiful planet.
HEAT RAGE
Dear Y,
The summer is back and there appears to be a serious
increase in road rage these days. The sun can do crazy
things to people, but, is this reason enough to be driving
dangerously? Just the other day I was driving out of my
building onto the main road when I almost got bashed by
a car driving at nothing less than 100kms/per hour in the
slow lane; fortunately I managed to pull to the side fast
enough to get out of that person’s way, but I was counting
my stars for the next few minutes.
It shocks me that people find it so difficult to abide to
simple rules. There is a fast lane, a middle lane and a slow
lane – how hard is that to understand? If you want to drive
fast, then please use the extreme left lane, which the fast
lane. Is it not obvious that people in the slow lane, choose
to be there because they don’t want to drive fast?
There have been many times when I have seen people
being flashed out of the slow lane because someone in
a really hurry want to overtake from the right hand side
(the slow lane), the one hazard stressed on in any driving
examination.
Oman is a beautiful country, and has laws that should
be abided to ensure the smooth and peaceful running
of the country, and we as people residing in the country,
should cooperate with these rules and regulations for the
betterment of the country.
There have also been many incidents where young boys
are racing around on the road with dune bikes. This is not
only dangerous for them, but for the rest of the people in
the area as well. I plead with the people of Oman to respect
the liberties the country gives us all, and don’t misuse it.
I wish you all the very best.
PK, Al Khuwair
A Point of Health
Dear Y,
Although I acknowledge the vast improvements made in healthcare in the country highlighted
in the last issue of Y, there is still clearly room for improvement in certain segments of health
services on offer. Without mentioning any names, I was shocked to find that although one of
the country’s leading hospitals does offer allergy analysis it would take two weeks to get the
results back because the readings would have to be shipped off to labs in Dubai for analysis.
One of the tests would take even longer, skipping Dubai and going instead to labs in Paris. I
have experienced healthcare facilities in various countries in the Middle East, and although
Oman undoubtedly has some of the best medical technology on offer, this allergy analysis,
a vital service in my opinion, is easily available in countries in the Levant where results are
presented to you on the same day. Healthcare should mean being treated as close to home as
possible, and now I am planning on a trip home to Beirut to avail of this service for faster and
more convenient results.
I would like to further add, however, that the country still has some of the finest facilities I have
seen for other services and this should be commended.
Best regards,
Cool It!
Dear Y,
I would like to suggest to Y suggests some tips for beating the
summer heat. This is not my first summer in Muscat, but it is
certainly not getting any easier. The humidity levels means that
I end up spending most of my weekends indoors as it’s simply
too unbearable to stay outside for long periods of time. I’m
sure there are plenty of activities to keep busy in the summer
months but I can’t think of too many apart from the beach or
the mall.
Just a thought, and I hope to read your suggestions in the
A Better Environment
for All
An Introduction to Islamic
Banking
The Oman Green Awards awarded those who have
managed to prove their positive ‘green’ intentions
towards Oman, through different measures for the
interest of society at large. The OGA was initiated
for the second time by Oman Economic Review.
Recently at the Bustan Palace Hotel, OGA 2011
took place with His Excellency Mohammed bin
Salim bin Said Al Toobi, Minister of Environment
and Climate Affairs, His Highness Sayyid Tarik bin
Shabib, Editor in Chief, Oman Economic Review,
and Sandeep Sehgal, Chief Executive, United
Media Services (UMS) present at the event.
Here are the winners, although I believe that all
nominees were winners in the bigger picture:
HSBC Bank Middle East Limited, Oman, won
the ‘Green Campaign’ award, with a special
commendation going to Electricity Holding Company. The ‘Green
Champion’ award went to Renaissance Services and a special
commendation for ‘Green Cover’.
Caledonian College of Engineering grabbed the ‘Green Education’
award, while American British Academy (an IB World School) won a
special commendation in the same category. For Haya Water it was
the ‘Green Footprint’ award they picked up, along with Cowi and
Partners who were awarded a special commendation.
The ‘Green Habitat’ award went to Bank Muscat and a special
commendation to Port of Salalah. Mawarid Mining picked up
the ‘Green Innovation’ award, with a special commendation was
awarded to Al-Abrar Petrogas.
Water Management Project’.
Ministry of Tourism and Carillion Alawi won the ‘Green Guardian’ award and the special
commendation, respectively. The ‘Green Research’ award went to the Directorate General
of Agricultural and Livestock Research at the Ministry of Agriculture, with Vale Oman
Pelletising Company collecting the special commendation in the same category.
Panasonic received the maximum vote in the ‘Public Choice Award’. Judges picked
Petroleum Development of Oman and the Department of Soils, Water and Agricultural
Engineering of Sultan Qaboos University for the ‘Special Jury Award’.
Akshay Kumar Parija, Producer of ‘The Living Ghost’, and Ashok Suvarna, Executive Director,
NPA Events, received a special recognition trophy in honour of the group’s commendable
work towards the environment through entertainment media.
Last week, Ernst & Young presented a fascinating programme on
‘Introduction to Islamic Banking’, which introduced Islamic banking
concepts, along with an overview of different Islamic banking products.
Finally, this session ended with a comparison of Islamic Banking to
conventional banking, as well as practical applications of the correct
banking products, along with commercial and personal banking
activities. It was rounded off with an interactive Q&A session.
Speaking at Ernst & Young’s Islamic Banking session at the Muscat
Holiday Hotel, Ashar Nazim, Executive Director and Head of Islamic
Financial Services, Ernst & Young MENA, said: “The Islamic banking
opportunity could be substantial as we expect the industry to reflect
its performance in other GCC markets. As an indication of how Islamic
banking would evolve in Oman, we can look at the neighbouring UAE
market, where it has captured a significant share in a short period of
time. New Islamic banks and Islamic banking windows in conventional
banks are set to capture a significant share of the market over the
coming months.”
There has been keen interest in
Islamic banking here in Oman,
and I am told that day-by-day,
more and more individuals are
enquiring about Islamic Banking.
Ahmed Al Esry, a Senior Director
at Ernst & Young Oman, said: “The
Islamic banking window operation
is accepted as a successful
model and in many markets such
as Saudi Arabia, where Islamic
windows account for nearly half of
the Shari’a assets, and UAE where
they have an 11 percent share. Given the similarities in the demographic landscape
and appetite for these services, we see great potential in the Omani market for Islamic
offerings. Successful Islamic windows understand the various Shari’a implications
on the banking business and are able to apply its requirements in their strategy,
operations, product, and governance and risk management functions.”
On the landscape front, it was Muriya Tourism Development Co. who
got the ‘Green Landscape’ award and Sultan Qaboos University the
special commendation for its ‘Central Control System for Irrigation
‘The Living Ghost’ has, previously, been nominated for an international film festival award
in both Cairo and USA.
With final groundwork underway for what should be a bedazzling Opening
Ceremony planned for 25th June, excitement is already growing in the
Omani camp where competitors are busy with final preparations and last
minute training. “It’s almost time for our departure for Greece and the
greatest event of 2011 for Team Oman. We’re privileged to have such a
dedicated team of volunteer coaches working tirelessly to have the team
be the best they can. Representing your country is the highest honour any
athlete can aspire to,” said Saleh Al Aghbari, Managing Director of Special
Olympics Oman. Team Oman sponsor, Omantel’s Hamdan Al Harrasi said,
“As part of our support for Special Olympics, we’re particularly proud to
sponsor Team Oman and I’d like to wish every one of our eight athletes
the best of luck in Athens.” Younis Al Maashani, Assistant Managing
Director, commented, “It’s thanks to individuals and
to unique corporate support from Omantel that we’re
able to continue to enrich and advance the lives of
our athletes and their communities. We’re proud of
this commitment by Omantel to show such valuable
support for some of the most inspiring athletes in the
world.”
Look out for more information on the team’s
preparations for the Games in next week’s issue of Y,
but in the meantime we wish Team Oman all the best
with the Games to come.
Team Oman
Preparing for Glory
Team Oman will join 7,500 athletes from 185 nations this June,
for one of the highlights of the sporting calendar – the Special
Olympics in Athens. The Special Olympics is one of the world’s
greatest displays of sporting talent, with athletes competing in
events such as football, powerlifting, basketball and aquatics.
The Games began in 1968 in Chicago, when Anne Burke, a PE
teacher, developed the idea for a sporting event for athletes with
special needs. After initial funding of 25,000 dollars, more than
1,000 athletes from across North America gathered in Chicago
for the first Games, which was heralded a triumph. In 1971, the
US Olympic Committee granted the Games the Olympic title and
since then the Special Olympics has become a highly anticipated
and hugely competitive international sporting event. Oman will
send eight athletes to the Games in Athens, selected for their
physical prowess, dedication and aptitude for sports, who will
compete in the powerlifting, bocce and athletics tournaments.
Four specialised coaches will also join the team, along with
friends and family who will be there to cheer on Team Oman.
His Highness Sayyid Faisal bin Turki Al Said, Chairman of Al
Amal Association, said: “I’m delighted and proud that Omani
athletes will be participating at the Special Olympics this
summer in Athens. Each of our athletes has shown great
motivation, discipline and tremendous skill in getting this far
and it’s worthy of real celebration.” The skills these athletes
hold has put them on a platform to compete with some of the
world’s best and this is an achievement in itself. His Highness
Sayyid Faisal bin Turki Al Said goes further to add, “In my
opinion, they’re all winners and it’s a remarkable achievement
for all our athletes, their coaches and families. Indeed, I know
Oman will be cheering them on in June and I’m really looking
forward to being in Athens to enjoy and share the experience
with our athletes. Their participation at the Games is the result
of hard work, commitment and dedication and I congratulate
all eight athletes.”
Luxury Rewarded
Pet Minding Service in Muscat
Last week, we reported on Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort
and Spa winning the ‘Best Resort Hotel in the World’ award, in
UK travel magazine ‘Ultratravel’. To celebrate the award, Barr Al
Jissah has announced some fantastic special deals that include
50 percent off the regular price of accomodation at all three of
its hotels. The Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa is
set on one of the most spectacular shores in Oman, with rooms
looking out to a clear turquoise-blue sea. Amenities include 20
world-class restaurants, cafes, lounges and bars, along with
six swimming pools and extensive options for recreation. The
resort has proven to be a huge draw for outside travellers and
more residents and nationals appear to be taking advantage of
the entertainment facilities on offer at the three hotels, in recent
months. Shangri-La is a chain with luxurious properties across
Asia, Europe and North America and to find out more about the
brand, visit the group’s website www.shangri-la.com.
Most of us pet lovers will dread this heartbreaking
moment, and it’s usually around this time of
year. Taking our annual holiday is a time that we
welcome loved ones back into our lives, but leave
others behind, and our pets are usually the ones
who suffer the most from this period of separation.
That’s why we were thrilled to see a new service in Muscat, and the name says it all -
Petpals! So while mummy or daddy are away, you can be sure your moggy or pooch is being
looked after by an expert, who promises to indulge your pet in some much needed “tender
loving care.” The Petpals team of animal lovers offer a range of services, from dog minding
to pampering, and cleaning to healing, while you’re out of town. The service begins with a
home visit, where they will meet you and your animal, gather information on specific needs
and requirements, get a veterinary release form, and arrange for times and days to pop in
on your pet. While you are away, the pet sitters will serve up fresh food and water for your
pooch, take care of grooming, and clean up any mess your pet might make. To ensure
your animal is healthy your helper will give your pet any required medication or arrange for
medical treatment in case of illnesses. Dog walking is also available.
ESO Takes Home Regional Award
The Environmental Society of Oman was awarded the 2010 Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah
Informatics Award for best website amongst Middle Eastern civil society organisations.
Held under the auspices of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-
Jaber Al-Sabah, the ceremony was attended by a host of important dignitaries including
His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. This was the
10th awards ceremony, and only the 5th to include participants from outside Oman, which
this year included civil society organisations. The judges, made up of experts in the IT
industry, selected the winners from criteria that included content, design and technicalities
of websites. Dr. Mehdi Ahmed Jaaffar, Vice President of ESO, received the award on
behalf of the society and commented, “ESO is both surprised and honoured to receive this
prestigious award. It is equally heartening to learn that our website was selected among
more than one thousand contestants and evaluated by different referees to finally earn the
award.”
Philippine’s National Day
Celebrated
Philippine’s Independence Day was celebrated in style this year,
and McDonald’s employees marked the festival in style, taking part
in a range of celebrations centred on Muscat’s Filipino community.
McDonald’s employees managed a successful run in two competitions
organised for the Philippines’ 133rd Independence Day, one a photo
exhibition at Muscat City Centre on 3rd July, and the second a
beauty pageant titled ‘Search for Mr. & Mrs. Philippines 2011’ on
10th June at Al Falaj Hotel. Dennis Del Rio, Business Development
Manager, McDonald’s said, “I, together with my Filipino colleagues,
express our deepest appreciation to McDonald’s for its continuous
support to the Philippine Independence Day Celebrations here in the
Sultanate of Oman for many years. Likewise, for giving the Filipino
people an opportunity to build and enhance our careers over the
years. I am proud a lot of Filipino employees and their families have
gone such a long way in their profession within the McDonald’s
organisation.” Ali K. Daud, Development Licensee and President of
McDonald’s Oman said, “I congratulate the Filipino people in Oman
in the celebration of their Independence Day. My sincerest thanks
to the Philippines Embassy in particular for supporting McDonald’s
with a wealth of talent that brings warm hospitality and helps
develop our young Omanis.”
This is a fantastic service for those who need to leave their pets behind during holiday season, so if you’re out of town and want to give your pet first class
treatment, type PetPals Oman-Petsitting in Facebook to visit the group.
learning about children with disabilities.
She said, "In the first workshop, we will introduce special education
to the community, and what it is and what are the theories we work
with children within a special education setting. We will discuss all
kinds of disabilities, such as autism, Down’s syndrome, different
types of mental retardation, learning difficulties, the importance
of early intervention as well as IEPs and how they are used. This
workshop will be very beneficial to parent that have handicapped
children. The instructor is a Professor of Special Education, with
over 21 years experience working in the special education field.
We are also giving another workshop for Omanis and expats for
teacher’s aide. In this workshop they will learn how to work with
children that have different kinds of disabilities and how they can
Movie Review
Blitz
Jason Statham, as always, brings something very special to a movie, and ‘Blitz’ is no exception.
Topping the list of British beefcakes, Statham always brings action to the screen, entertaining
his fans in every role he has taken, in this case a highflying, unorthodox, rugged London cop
who believes in making sure justice is served, but on his terms and conditions. British crime
thriller ‘Blitz’, cut short, is the story of cop who stops at nothing to track down and eliminate
a crazed cop killer, whose assault on the police leaves the city trembling. The high point of
the movie, however, I believe, is Aidan Gillen, who does supreme justice in his role as the
‘Blitz’. Shining as a burbling, orthodontically challenged, out-of-his-mind villain, Gillen masters
this complexed role with such perfection that at times you will come close to believing his
convictions. ‘Blitz’ is based on the Ken Bruen crime thriller novel, and it is just as good as the
original, if not better. The Verdict: Definitely worth a watch.
Starring: Jason Statham, Paddy Considine, Aidan Gillen,
David Morrissey, Zawe Ashton
Directed by: Elliott Lester
Making a Difference!
We are proud to share with you
that British writer Penny Destro
has recently presented a cheque
to the National Association
for Cancer Awareness, to help
with the running of the Mobile
Mammography Unit. On behalf
of NACA, Dr. Wahid Al Kharusi, the Association’s Secretary General,
accepted the cheque from Penny, where 'Frothy Coffee' made
1,500 rials.
Penny Destro is the author of ‘Frothy Coffee’, a book which I had fun
reading, and I enjoyed presenting to friends as gifts. It is filled with
short stories and rhymes for women. ‘Frothy Coffee’ was sponsored
by Y and Caribou Coffee, and it was written for the purpose of
supporting charities. At the presentation in Caribou Coffee, Bareeq
al Shatti, Penny thanked her sponsors, the many outlets across
Muscat who have sold the book, and all those who bought a copy.
She said, “I believe the Mobile Mammography Unit is one of the
most important innovations affecting the women of Oman in recent
years. It takes a vital service to areas where previously there was
none. Having friends whose lives have been saved by early diagnosis
of breast cancer, I wanted to do something to help.”
Ladies, call the NACA head quarters to find out more about the MMU
on 24498716. A BIG thank you to Penny for making a difference in
the world!
Album Review
Automatic For The People
R.E.M
After the release of smash albums ‘Green’ and ‘Out of Time’, R.E.M engraved their place in
the alternative-rock history bringing a moody flavour to the global music scene (that at the
time was not so popular), steering away from the regular up-tempo hard rock. But it was
their following album ‘Automatic for the People’ released in 1992 that forever placed them
amidst the legends in the music world, which till this day they stand unmoved, and are still
remembered for their lyrical brilliance and haunting melodies. This particular album offers the
best in their song writing abilities, as well as a melodic pique. Tunes like ‘Drive’ take on gritty
acoustics with a touch of soul that would appeal to rock and soul lovers alike. ‘Everybody
Hurts’ reaches out to the discomforted soul, bringing a feeling of hope and harmony, but
it's also a song that many can easily relate to. ‘Star Me Kitten’ brings a soothing, almost
mesmerising feel to it, while ‘Man on the Moon’ is practically impossible not to sing-along to.
This album by R.E.M is a must add to your record collection, because this group was nothing
ordinary, but instead is almost imperfectly perfect in many ways.
Summer
Sandstorm
Nomadic life and pristine deserts have been regular settings
for some of the world’s greatest stories. One of the greatest
examples of ‘desert literature’ is that of a British officer,
turned adventurer, T.E Lawrence, who wrote about his
experiences in Arabia during the First World War in ‘Seven
Pillars of Wisdom’. The autobiographical work features vivid
descriptions of the Middle East culture, from a western
context. Many years ago travelling in an old worn-out bus
travelling from Bur Safaga to Suez , I read this book for the
first time. At that point I never realized that in several years
time I would experience many adventures in the sandy and
uninhabited deserts, myself.
I was reminded of this moment two weeks ago, when I tried
to check out the western threshold of Sharqiya Sands. In the
evening I took a short break and hid between the small faded
orange sand dunes of the desert, somewhere southeast of
Sinaw. I walked a little, investigating the area and found a
landscape completely different from what is usually found
in the Bidiya area. The sand dunes are small, clustered and
not too high. The whole area is also dotted with small acacia
trees and shrubbery. Initially it was very hot, dry and quiet
with a weak wind that veiled the desert in silence.
Suddenly, around 5pm, the weather conditions completely
changed and I was beaten back by strong winds. It soon
picked up into a full-blown sandstorm coming out from
the east but it created the perfect light conditions and
atmosphere for good desert photography. Immediately, I
protected my camera from the dust, and started snapping
away. A few times the wind blew my legs out of place, making
it challenging to walk through the soft sand and blankets of
dust blinded my eyes. I had taken around 300 photographs
when the sun set. Visibility was poor so I decided to set off
for the asphalt road using my GPS locator.
The sandstorm was not extremely strong, or very dangerous,
however the awareness of being alone, surrounded by pure
nature was a great pleasure and experience. I recommend
anyone who wants a real desert adventure to go there during
the summer sandstorm season.
HOUSING
FOR ALL
Words Karima Farid
What is a home?
A home is a place of residence or refuge. When it refers
to a building, it is usually a place in which an individual
or a family can rest and store personal property.
English-speaking people generally call any building
they routinely occupy, ‘home’. Many people leave their
houses during the day for work and recreation, and
return to them to sleep and for other activities.
What is ‘renting’?
Renting is an agreement where a payment is made for
the temporary use of a good, service or property owned
by another. A gross lease is when the tenant pays a flat
rental amount and the landlord pays for all property
charges regularly incurred by the ownership from
landowners.
What is an apartment?
An apartment (in American English) or flat (in British
English) is a self-contained housing unit (a type of
residential real estate) that occupies only part of a
building.
Are you thinking of buying property in Muscat? Well, this week we have
one option for you, the kind of answer that we at Y have been looking into
for a while, now. Previously at Y, we looked into topics related to housing
and living in debt. These kinds of issues are the ones that affect young
Omani couples more than anyone else.
During our research for the story, we came across Farhan Al Shahaibi,
who is a pilot and a highly respected member of society, who was ready
to lend a hand in suggesting some advice based on his own experiences.
To recap this story, Farhan said in the issue: “Most banks only give you a
loan from the age of 25 and that would be the best time for you to use the
‘age’ advantage. The older you are, the more you may need to get medical
examinations and have a shorter period of time to pay it back. The younger
you are, the easier things will get as you will have minimum commitments
at that time. Saving is especially important when you are younger, as long
as you are not forgetting to have fun and live a social life, too. Whether it
is through a bank, or a trusted society, shelter is always more important
than anything else, it should be your priority. Invest in your country as one
day you will go home. I was away for 15 years, and if I had the chance to
go back in time, I would surely invest in a property.”
Back in November last year, our Work Editor investigated a problem faced
by young Omanis – purchasing a property of their own. He said, “No
matter where in the world you are, getting onto the property ladder whilst
being a newlywed can be notoriously difficult. Gone are the days when
a steady supply of property coupled with sustainable population growth
guaranteed affordable housing for all. Here in Oman, relatively low wages
for young workers and fresh graduates, and combined with
high property prices, are beginning to bite, and it’s local
young professionals who are amongst the hardest hit.”
Up until two weeks ago, for the younger professional Omanis,
owning any form of housing was near to impossible due
to mounting property real estate prices. Although paying
rent in reality gives you little return, it has still been one of
the only options for young couples. Although lower-priced
homes are still for sale in different parts of the Sultanate,
there is always the ‘but’ factor that stops you from buying
when you get to the small print. It’s either that the location
is inconvenient, the facilities aren’t good enough, or maybe
the finishing is substandard.
After a long wait, and looking into the reasons why younger
Omanis are still hesitant to buy property, this week we are
proud to have looked into RIMAL. In my opinion, this is a
project that will change the real estate market in the country,
for the better. On June 4th, a remarkable development in
Muscat occurred when two brothers announced that AQAR
(Al Khonji Real Estate & Development) has launched
RIMAL apartments for individuals in Oman and the GCC.
The exclusive real estate agent for RIMAL is Better Homes
conference, “The real estate
market has been looking
for a development like
RIMAL for some time. It
is true that young Omanis
and GCC residents want to
invest in their own homes
and until now it has proved
difficult to find a quality, Mr. Mohammed Al Khonji,
luxury accommodation at
an affordable price. We
have already experienced a great deal of interest in RIMAL from buyers who
are impressed with the location, the layout of the apartments and the quality
of the architecture, which isn’t surprising considering that it has been designed
by Mr. Mohammed Al Khonji and his brother Mr. Qaboos Al Khonji who
have been able to incorporate their passion for European architecture into this
premium new project at the same time as staying true to their Omani heritage.”
These apartments are unique in location, facilities and architecture.
We met Mr. Mohammed Al Khonji, Chairman and CEO of AQAR personally.
He chatted to us about his beginnings and their latest project, RIMAL. Mr.
Mohammed reflects authenticity, as his main concern is to cater to young
Omani couples and families. Located in Bowshar, RIMAL’s architecture and
apartment designs have been carefully planned by AQAR to capture Omani
heritage and European designs which makes it the perfect place for individuals
Oman. Glenn Meek, General Manager, said at a press to live alone or with their families.
22 23
Here is what he had to say about the project:
studies, professors would always say ‘Location,
Location and Location’ - not once, but three times,
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
We come from an old heritage, business family. Our
origins in business started with our grandfather in 1920,
here in Oman. Since then, we have been moved into in real
estate, and I along with my brother Qaboos, are the third
generation of the Al Khonji family. Since then, we have
diversified into different areas such as trading, business,
so location is vital. RIMAL is at the tip of the sand
dunes; you can see everything that you want. You
have an option of overlooking the sea, mountains,
sand dunes, the pool, the garden or the city. So
whatever your requirements, it is all there. All you
have to do is choose the position of your apartment
in the building.
and real estate and also, we deal in manufacturing services.
So we have been growing our business both here in Oman
and internationally.
When did you and your brother Mr. Qaboos start your
business?
We started investing in real estate in 1991, and initially
began in the USA while I was in university. With just a
small amount of money and two other partners, we bought
a big real estate development for a small amount of money.
We were lucky at the time as there was a boom in the real
estate market in Colorado, and we made a good profit and
that is how we jumped into the next project. From then
on, we invested into a bigger complex, and then an even
a bigger one. I really enjoyed my studying years in the
USA because it was a really good experience in using my
practical experience in real estate, while studying.
What was your first project in Oman?
Our first real estate project in Oman was in 1999. We
started then with a nine unit apartment and today we are
very proud to announce RIMAL with 254 units, and also
a shopping centre. With the different range of facilities and
amenities that we made sure were available at RIMAL, we
are proud to have launched this great project. For two young
brothers to be able to think of the requirements of small
Omani families here, I believe we are catering to what is
missing here. We had been studying this project for a whole
year before we came up with this concept. We took our time
in this, and looked at from different angles like the size and
mix of apartments. Also, we looked at the kind of facilities
that are missing in other projects, also the pricing as far as
five years ago. Back then prices started at 43,000 rials for a
one bedroom apartment, and five years later we at RIMAL
started from 37,000 rials - the right pricing of RIMAL is
something that was very important to Qaboos and I, and I
believe we have got it right. Plus, as I said, our main target
is starter-up families, graduates and young couples who have just gotten married,
and maybe have two kids.
Please tell us about RIMAL.
Whilst looking into what was missing in other projects, we found that a shopping
centre is a perfect fit for this kind of project. We also added a large swimming
pool, and a smaller one for the kids. And for the first time in Oman, we introduced
a building with three floor underground parking. We also have two free health
clubs, one for ladies and one for gents, as well as garbage shoots, a problem
which is often overlooked in many other projects.
Also, climate controlled corridors - this new development will be one of the
largest of its kind in Oman ranging from one, two and three bedroom single
storey homes, as well as three and four bedroom duplex apartments together
with a house keeper’s room. With 24 hour security for people and cars, it is
indeed a safe and secure complex.
In my opinion, RIMAL is located in one of the best locations in the Sultanate,
how important was location to you?
Well, the first thing that comes to anyone’s mind when it comes to living
arrangements, or to invest, is location. So when it comes to real estate, and market
The apartments are affordable, how did you
manage to enclose beautiful architecture, with
such facilities at this price?
This is a good question. Unlike others who build
projects further away from the city, they are looking
to offer a cheaper apartment with basic specifications
for sale. Here we thought no! let’s have bigger land
with more levels and better deluxe finishing at an
affordable price. That is why from the launch until
today we have already sold a good percentage of the
apartments, which is a getting a great response from
the public and proves we got it right.
What are the Al Khonji brothers individual roles
in regards to RIMAL?
In AQAR, I am the CEO and Chairman. My brother
and I have been working together to bring RIMAL to
reality while not forgetting any details. My brother is
mainly handling Better Homes as he is the Managing
Director there, and also he is the Managing Director at Al
Binaa Construction. His role actually comes in the selling
of RIMAL properties which we are doing through Better
Homes. He also deals with finishing which we are doing
through Binaa Construction.
Do you think that this project will change the property
market prices?
I think we will be playing a small role in change. We
are looking forward to healthy competition and that our
competitors deliver. We really want other developers to
come into the market with their products, as that will help
them and help us. It is good to have varieties and choices for
the end user, and we are ready for it.
I would like to thank Mr. Mohammed Al Khonji for his time,
and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Al
Khonji brothers on behalf of the Omanis of my
generation. This project is surely the start of
hope for many locals here to own a property at
a place like RIMAL. I hope future developers
will cater more to locals too, and we are eagerly
awaiting healthy competition to begin!
Watch out for the Affordable Housing
Development Summit Oman next week, which
will be held on June 19th to June 22nd at the
experts who will share their experiences and
suggestions on low-cost housing projects.
First Steps
To find out more about TLC, email info@tlcoman.com
or call +968 99381458 to make an appointment.
The greatest time of human learning is unsurprisingly
during the years prior to school. Not only is this a period
we develop faster physically than at any other time, but
also when we take our first wobbly steps on both feet, form
simple sentences and learn important lessons in a moral
code. Some preschools waste this golden opportunity and
limit learning time to a series of undemanding games and
simple handicrafts. What has been missing in this country,
parents say, is a holistic approach to education which will
stimulate and nurture children during school time and help
them to reach their full potential later on in life. The TLC
school aims at just that, providing life skills a child needs to
blossom in their early years in a fun, challenging and caring
environment. TLC’s Sally Vale says, “We all believe that
while academic achievement is important, our programmes
should recognise and grow personal, social and emotional
skills.” Her role in the school is equally diverse. Officially she
is the Academic Director and one of the school’s investors,
but this in itself brings a whole host of other responsibilities.
Sally says, “In a small school this means many things but
most importantly my role is to support TLC staff, providing the resources and
opportunities to do their work efficiently.” However, this flexibility has given
Sally the opportunity to shape learning in a way that best suits the children.
This is achieved thanks to a bounty of experience from her teachers, with Sally
adding, “TLC works with its teachers to develop and enhance its core curricula
and teaching approach. Our Primary teachers are mainly British; we are familiar
with the UK National Curriculum and therefore base our programmes on its
standards and systems.” It is hoped that this will add an interesting dimension
to preschool teaching in Oman and raise the bar for other competitors to follow.
Sally’s grounding in the field of education has been a key to this, and has taken
many different routes throughout her life. She muses, “I trained as a Secondary
teacher of English Language and Literature but have taught age groups from
nursery through to university level. I’ve worked in a wide range of cultures as
well. I have seen how children and adults can be transformed by challenging and
inspiring educational programmes and teachers.” Challenging is the word that
best captures TLC’s path to existence, but through hard work and steely support
the school is already on its first steps to success.
It all began after careful consideration and painstaking planning. Sally says,
“I came to Oman 10 years ago and worked as head of languages at the Oman
Tourism College. Five years ago I moved into training and consultancy
for corporate clients. Working independently gave me the confidence to
consider setting up, with my husband (David), a nursery and primary school,
something I’d thought about but hadn’t attempted before.” Sally’s plans came
into fruition when she met Raya Al Riyami, an educator who has a diverse
portfolio of skills she has garnered from her career in nursing, education
and tourism. “Raya Al Riyami introduced us to Her Highness Sayyida Aliya
bint Thuwainy bin Shihab Al Said and together we founded TLC in January
2008. Sayyidda Aliya is well known for her work with a range of charities and
initiatives; for example, she is Chair of the Blind Association and the Oman
Hereditary Blood Disorder Association.” Raya has also worked on a range of
social projects. She was the pioneer of the Girl Guide Association in Oman
and a founding member of the Handicapped Children Association and now
she brings the expertise she learnt from these groups to the TLC working as
Director of Communications, and is responsible for communication between
the school, students, parents and the community.
“We had to learn this from scratch,” Sally says about the drive
to push through TLC’s promise to provide a holistic form of
education. “Fortunately, we have received wonderful support
from the Ministry of Education and Social Development. We
now have classes up to Primary Three and next year will be able
to offer up to Primary Six.” However, TLC has worked with the
existing educational channels in the country to develop a niche
in the market. Sally says, “Oman has many good nursery and
primary schools. TLC is slightly different in that we now can
provide for children aged 18 months to 11 years old. Others tend
to focus either on nursery provision or Foundation and Primary.”
Now, with 160 pupils at the school, “TLC plans to have its own
purpose built school within the next 3 to 5 years. We also hope
to open more branches of TLC in other areas of Oman.” After
a steady start, TLC could give schools in the country a gentle
push to provide even higher standards of education and to cater
lessons and syllabus around their students’ mental growth.

A proud national of Oman, Abbas al Lawati is in love with his
country and his people. Currently pursuing an Association
of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) degree, Abbas
holds a BSc. Honours in Applied Accounting from Oxford
Brooks, and is currently working as a relations officer in the
corporate department of one of the banks here in Muscat.
He has also worked as an external auditor in one of the four
biggest auditing firms, and has recently taken up kickboxing
as his first sport. This, however, is only a few of the very
many characteristics that make up Abbas; the one that
stands out the most, or stands up if you please, is his great
sense of humour. It wasn’t very long ago when Abbas thrilled
audiences with his opening act for international stand-up
comedian Rajiv Satyal, during his visit to Oman. This is
where I met our very own Omani joke-box. Y conducted an
interview with Abbas in order to find out more about this
young upcoming talent and the potential of the newly found
art of comedy in Oman today.
What encouraged you to take up stand-up comedy?
I was usually the funny guy in the group and I did like that
title. I started using my jokes on different groups of people
to see how they respond to my jokes. I tried it on serious
people, people with humour, geeky people, and several other
groups, and got a pretty good response. I started feeling
that my humour was unique; when I used the same jokes on
different people and people I would meet for the first time,
it would still make them laugh, and not only that, but when I
would meet them again they would remember my jokes and
that gave me a lot of confidence. I always found humour as
the perfect ice-breaking method; people that I would meet
for the first time would instantly feel comfortable opening
up when I dropped a few funny punch lines, and to be honest
it would also put me in my comfort zone. Usually people
have the impression that humour can only be used when
the time is right, but in my opinion, humour can be used at
any moment, be it a serious situation. How many times has
it happened that you see a face smiling and it has made you
smile? Well, being a stand-up comedian gives you a chance to
look at a hundred faces smiling at you, and I would say that
was my biggest inspiration to take it up.
How do you see the future of standup
comedy here in Oman?
I think there is scope for stand-up
comedy in Oman. Even though there
are not many venues or occasions to
perform in, which puts a comedian in
a very difficult situation, because he
will have to come up with new material
every now and then entertain the same
set of crowd. People of Muscat have a
strong appetite for trying something
new and entertainment shows in
general have always attracted a decent
number. There is not much stand-up
going around in Oman, which means
there is a lot of room for it to grow,
and if it gets the right kind of support,
it might just be the next big thing in
town.
What kind of response have you
received from the shows that you
have done? Are there any particular
jokes that audiences appreciate here
in Oman?
The response I got from the shows
I did was amazing. The crowd was
wonderful and very receptive. I did
a couple of corporate shows too and
did not have very high expectations
from it, but to my surprise it was really
good. Yes. The crowd really likes it
when my jokes are localised; they
like it particularly because they can
directly relate to what I say, and when
you can do that it automatically paints
a picture of exactly what I am trying to
say.
Would you say that there is level of
sensitivity here in Oman that might
hold you back from delivering jokes?
In other words, do you ever have to
tone down your jokes in order not to
hurt people’s feelings?
Not really. I mean, I do have to take
a word or two out of my routine but
I never had to tone down my jokes to
an extent where I had to write a new
one from scratch. I would say that the
crowd here is amazing when it comes
to being a sport, but yes, sometimes
you just don’t feel that it’s right to use
a word or a line from a joke, and when
I get that feeling I just scrap that line
because I don’t want to take any chance
hurting anyone’s feelings, because if it
wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be on the
stage.
Who would you reckon to be the
best stand-up act in the world today,
and do you have any mentors in the
world of stand up?
Russell Peters is the best act in my
opinion; I like the way he trademarks
his jokes, they are so hard for any other
comedian to react and do it the way he
does. I also like the way he researches
on the jokes he performs; facts make a
major part of his jokes and then it’s the
extremely funny punch lines that he
drops. I watch a lot of his stand-up acts,
not to copy his style or his jokes, but to
learn the art of stand-up in general.
Do you create your own material,
and where do you draw inspiration
from?
Yes, I do write my own material, and
even if someone else did you wouldn’t
know (that was just a joke by the
way). My material is mostly inspired
by observing not only people, but all
the things that are around me. When I
notice something funny I make a note
of it, make it funnier and work on the
delivery of the joke, add a few punch
lines and you have a good two minute
set to do on the stage.
Do you plan on performing on an
international stage someday?
If I do get a chance I would love to.
Recently, I opened the show for Rajiv
Satyal, who has opened shows for
big names like Russell Peters, Dave
Chappelle and Tim Allen. Even though
the show was local, there was a lot of
pressure on me because I was sharing
the stage with an international standup
comedian, and despite of all that it
was a great feeling. I have also done a
show for Ahmed Ahmed who is a part
of Axis of Evil Show which includes
names like Dean Obeidallah, Aron
Kader and Maz Jobrani.
What do you feel needs to be done to
improve or further promote standup
comedy here in the country?
I think that the event companies, radio
stations and other organisations in
Muscat should play a part and take
an initiative in organising stand-up
events in town, and rather than calling
international stand-up talents they
might want to try giving local talents
a shot. Surely there should be a right
balance between calling comedians
from abroad and having local shows at
the same time.
Do you plan on making stand-up
a profession, or do you have other
plans in the long run?
Like I said before, I would love to take
up stand-up comedy as a full-time job,
but then at this time I don’t know. I
have been getting shows every now
and then, and I try to perform as much
as I can so that I improve further and
at the same time don’t get rusty, so if
I can be that good at it then why not…
I’m just waiting for the big break.
Do you see a future for stand-up here
in the country, or will you look to
perform outside Oman for a better
response?
I see a bright future for comedy here
in Oman, and the crowd is just right
for it to click. Even then I would like to
travel and perform in other countries
and experience that feeling. Being an
Omani I know Arab humour, and I will
be honest – it’s very funny, the only
thing that needs to be done is to have
a steady platform for comedians to
perform, and believe me there will be a
tsunami of comedians pouring in from
all parts of Oman.
Anything you would like to say to
young upcoming stand-up acts in
Oman?
Well, keep chasing what you have a
passion for and sooner or later you
will have it. All your shows might not
go as planned, but that’s what teaches
you that there is no limit to learning
and you can go on and on. No matter
where you perform, it can be at the
dinner table entertaining your family,
entertaining a bunch of people at your
friend’s birthday party or on the stage
in front of thousands of people; it is
all the same and requires the same
level of skill that you need to make an
individual laugh. So keep laughing and
making people laugh... believe me it’s
the best job.
Last week was probably the hottest that we have experienced this year, and we
are still only in the month of June! We naturally searched Muscat for products
that could calm us down, or cool us off. Check out our picks for this week, for
both men and women!
Coco Mademoiselle
I tried this out with my sister, and let me just say
it is indeed a scent to remember. It is perfect,
‘summery’ and is definitely a perfume you can buy
Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour
Cream
After rave reviews that I have read about
this product, I finally tried it out. Although I
was warned that it doesn’t smell really good,
and it doesn’t, it does work well on your lips.
Check it out!
again and thanks again to Kiwi for this.
IIa Portable Door Alarm Wedge
For travellers who aren’t too comfortable sleeping in hotels, worrying about the
fact that there is a chance of someone creeping into your room in the middle
of the night, the IIa Portable Door Alarm Wedge, priced at £14.95 (9.4 rials), is
one gizmo that will come as a relief. By slipping the device under the door before
hopping into bed for a good night’s sleep, the wedge acts as a security sensor
that will sound a shrill alarm if any intruder may attempt to make an entrance. For
more information, go to www.firebox.com.
WeWood Chrono Watch
It’s most likely that this is the first time you would have heard of the WeWood
brand. Environmentalists, though, may be more familiar because these madefrom-wood
watch makers are on a mission to 'save the trees'. With WeWood
pledging to plant a tree for every watch purchased. These 100 percent natural
wood-made timepieces are a true work of art that can tell time ‘naturally’. It’s
uncertain as to whether the device is fire proof, but if not, then it could come in
handy around the campfire. Priced at $119.99 (46 rials), the WeWood Chrono
Watch is available online. For more information, go to www.thinkgeek.com.
Lacoste L.12.12
Fragrance Collection
Last week, whilst shopping,
my husband tried out the Blue
Lacoste and it smelt gorgeous.
Ladies, this could be a perfect
gift for your man! Inspired by
Lacoste’s famous polo shirts,
these perfumes come in white,
Wireless Speed Wheel for Xbox 360
Xbox 360 gamers, and more so racers, have much to cheer about with the introduction
of the Wireless Speed Wheel for the Xbox 360, that promises to bring a more realistic
feel to racing and air combat gaming. This baby is designed much like the regular Xbox
360 controller, sporting similar buttons for convenience. It is uncertain exactly when the
device will be available in the market, but reports state that is shouldn’t be too long. The
estimated price of this baby is around $60 (23 rials); a price that any gamer should be
comfortable paying to get a much improved gaming experience. For more information, go
The Kaya Skin
Care Challenge
Finale
After a month of using face products from Kaya, I am confident to declare that this has
been one of the best challenges I have done so far. This is because it has given me the
benefit of not only having better skin, but stuck me on a skincare regime that I can never
give up.
For those of you who pick up products off any supermarket shelf for your skin, please
don’t simply do that! Ladies, if you invest in your skin, in the long run it is an investment
that can never fail - it is indeed a good investment! Go to Kaya Skin Clinic and check out
what I have been using this month as an option, of course, according to your own skin
type. Kaya Skin Clinic’s products left my skin nourished, radiant and I have had more than
a few people commenting and asking me about my skin! Thank you Kaya!
TRAMP-It Jump Shoes
If you’re looking to add a little spring to your step, then these TRAMP-It Jump
Shoes are sure to do the job. Designed uniquely in three different sizes (small,
medium and large), the device will add a considerable amount of speed and
agility to your step, which will probably get you to wherever you need to be a
tad earlier. Constructed from extremely tough and flexible material, durability
is something that users need not worry about. I can’t help but think that
these babies would be useful in a game of basketball – talk about an unfair
advantage! Priced at £99.99 (63 rials), £109.99 (69 rials) and £119.99 (75
rials), according to the size of the shoes, these hoppers are definitely worth the
buy. For more information, go to www.firebox.com.
A Bentley for Break fast
Words Kiran Jay Haslam | Photography Jerzy Wierzbicki
“I’ll have a cup of English breakfast tea please, thank you.” I
smiled at the waitress. A definite foray into unchartered territory
for me; these days you’d normally see me sipping an espresso.
Or two. Or three! But it is here, within the confines of the
Shangri-La’s glorious grounds, that I am indulging in quite a
spectacular breakfast, of the ‘continental’ kind.
Freshly squeezed juice. Now, this article is my
very last editorial piece for Y Magazine. So, in an effort to go
out in a somewhat spectacular fashion, I thought long and hard
about what my parting car review should be. Should I write about
a rather rare Porsche? A flamboyant Italian roadster? A French
pocket-rocket? In the years I have spent behind various wheels
in the Gulf, I have driven just about every luxurious supercar out
there - and a whole bunch of high-end fluff, too: Astons, Ferraris,
Porsches, Rolls Royce, Lamborghinis. Some more manic than
others, some astoundingly charming in their own quaint little
way. However, I felt I needed to bid thee farewell with the only
car that has stolen my heart and astounded my automobile
sensibilities. Yep, it’s a Bentley.
The first time I experienced the new Continental
GT I was lucky enough to be in the car with
one of its creators - Member of the Board of
Bentley Motors and Engineering wizard, Dr.
Ulrich Eichhorn. What a great way to understand
the vehicle’s dynamics and pick up on nuances
that would otherwise go unnoticed. Instead of
getting all giggly over the 567hp ‘W’ configured
6.0-litre bi-turbo 12-cylinder and focusing solely
on the 700Nm power delivery from the insanely
fast ‘Quickshift’ transmission - that now sees
gear change times slashed by 50 percent - the
pivotal centre’s ability to shift at the mercy of a
damper control function pretty much dominated
our conversation. It plays a key role in making
the 2.3 ton GT feel about 500kgs lighter and
unbelievably agile. So agile, in fact, that I’d gladly
select Bentley’s 2011 Continental GT for a spot of
spirited weekend fun, over and above anything
else out there.
‘The Bentley Continental GT is
an archetype of the ‘automobile
collective unconscious’, from
which every other supercar
merely pays homage.'
A warm, flu f f y croissant. The new GT is
impossible to fault. Large enough to carry four passengers, it
remains a shining example of a vehicle that questions motoring
dichotomy. French philosopher, Jacques Derrida, once penned,
“Unless a distinction can be made rigorous and precise it isn't
really a distinction.” Well Jacque, who said a vehicle with supreme
sporting prowess, the ability to rocket to the speed limit within
4.6 seconds and pound the horizon line all the way to 318km/hr,
couldn’t be distinctly family friendly? Or distinctly practical? The
Continental GT certainly is.
It is hard to put any Bentley into words, especially so the
Continental GT – well, at least without using the word ‘sumptuous’.
It’s beautifully designed, crafted and engineered. The layout of the
dash, inspired by the Bentley flying wings logo, is home to most
of the controls and everything is perfectly situated if you’re in the
driver’s seat. The seats are unsurpassed in comfort and support,
and in this car, are gloriously trimmed in supple Saffron leather,
highlighted with Imperial Blue hide and contrasting stitching.
The ‘cobra’ style seats also harbour exquisite seat
ventilation and a state-of-the-art massage system. If
this were my daily driver, my therapist, Umesh, at the
Sri Sri Ayurvedic centre would be most pleased!
The technology used in this car is a serious
step up from its predecessor, not just in terms
of manufacturing the chassis, mechanicals and
superformed bodywork, but also in terms of safety and
multimedia. The touch-screen system is impressive,
with a totally redesigned graphic interface that controls
vehicle dynamics, telephone, navigation and an
audiophile’s sonic dream: an exclusive Naim audio
package. Balanced Mode Radiator speakers and digital
processing alter your perception of the acoustic space.
Of course there’s plenty of space inside a Bentley, but
the separation and clarity of this system defies the
cabin layout.

Rock, pop, R’n’B, house – all your
favorite hits –on the road, at home,
at work and at play. All the latest
sounds from around the world,
and angular roof; the crease lines taper towards the rear haunches, where
exaggerated arches beef out the rear end. From some angles there is a clear
connect to a 1950’s R-Type Continental, and the pinched lines across the side
and over the front arches bolster that connect.
delivered with local flavour and style.
Popping in Lee Ritenour’s Harlequin album on CD – my
preferred disc for testing high-end audio systems - I was
immediately transported to an auditorium, where I could
probably identify the particular brand of strings used in
the grand piano parts on the 90’s Jazz fusion classic’s title
track. I heard more detail in this Bentley than I have done
with a pair of AKG-K701 headphones on! Magnificent.
So much so that I called an audiophile friend of mine in
Vietnam, and proceeded to blast the track to him down my
cellphone, whilst racing along the Sultan Qaboos Highway.
“Quem terá esse vício bendito - Quem terá o ofício bonito -
Pra fazer minha gente feliz novamente?”
Succulent seasonal fresh fruit. The
flowing lines and low roofline of the GT make it robust
yet regal, with a slightly butch, almost ‘chopped’ appeal.
An enormous chrome grille rises steeply to a long bonnet
It’s almost inconceivable to picture any Bentley Continental GT owner getting
into another car and being truly satisfied. They’d be left wanting for the fine work
of artisans and master craftsmen. The bespoke appeal of this Bentley sits at its
core. And remember: this is a car that can thunder past any vehicle obstructing
it, only to leave deflated egos and sections of tortured tarmac in its wake.
It was Hans Urs von Balthasar who said, “Beauty is the disinterested one,
without which the ancient world refused to understand itself, a world which both
imperceptibly and yet unmistakably has bid farewell to our new world…” Well,
it is indeed a shame that old Balthasar never got behind the wheel of Bentley’s
new Continental GT. It is the most beautifully crafted and most electrifying
motor vehicle on the planet. It is the stuff of dreams. It sits in a modern world,
with undiluted purpose and ‘engineering resolve’; it is now the only car that
creeps into my imaginary world when I sleep and the first thing on my mind
when I wake. For an enthusiast such as myself, the Bentley Continental GT is
an archetype of the ‘automobile collective unconscious’, from which every other
modern supercar merely pays homage.

Sailing Completely Omani
Omani sailing has come a long way over the years, and testament to this is the 100
percent Omani crew that participated in the Grand Prix de l'École Navale that took
place in France’s western coastal city of Brest, just recently. Gracing the waters
were Oman’s Mohamed al Ghailani (Skipper), Mohsin a Busaidi (Main), Fahad al
Hosni (Trimmer) and Ali al Bulushi (Bowman) in Team A. In Team B, Abdulla al Farsi
(Skipper), Ahmed al Mamary (Main), Yassir al Rahbi (Trimmer) and Nawad al Ghidani
(Bowman).
Showing true talent and class against a fleet of 45 boats of the same class, the Omani
crew sailed a J80, a similar class used during the Sailing Arabia Tour earlier in the
year. The team managed to successfully overcome challenging weather conditions
in a unique race amongst the best sailors of the world. “I am very pleased to see the
team’s performance. Not only is this the team’s first time to compete in the J80s, but
also it is their first time to sail with a full Omani crew. The Omani sailors have come a
long way in offshore sailing and this sets a great training platform for the Omanis to
helm the boat as they compete with top sailors around the world,” said Coach Alistair
Moore.
Commenting on the complexity of the race, that the Omani squad managed to
successfully tackle, Moore added, “The J80s are unlike the other sailing boats. They
are smaller and much slower compared to Far30s and the M34. However, this is not
a game of speed but rather a game of tactics and the team has made some great
tactical decisions onboard.”
It is also important to mention that the Omani team was the only one from outside
Europe to compete in the regatta, as 99 percent of the registered boats and sailors
were French, English or Italian.
Going up against serious competition, the Omani squad never looked to be backing
down from the challenge, surging through with tremendous determination. “Some
of the top sailors of this class raced here today with some fierce competition. But our
boys did not stop fighting. The competitors have been massively praising the Omani
teams for their professionalism in dealing with the boat as well as their behaviour and
sportsmanship with the other competitors,” Moore says.
"We are happy with the overall result. This is
our first time as a full Omani crew on board.
At one point we left 15 teams behind us
who were more trained than us. This is very
promising for the Tour de France à la voile,
however, we need to continue training and
learn from our mistakes. As the skipper, I
was quite stressed at the starting line on day
one, since it was the first time that we were
competing with 45 boats, but this stress was
soon gone. Both I and Abdulla were racing
very close at all times, which means that we
are all progressing at the same pace. It is
great. It was a great training opportunity and
we had a lot of fun."
OMANI DUO
MAKE THE
FINALS
It was announced
this week that two of
Oman’s karting aces will
be soaring at the Rotex
Max Grand Final that will
take place in the UAE in
November this year -
the biggest kart racing
series in the world,
today! Young and very
talented siblings, Sanad
and Abdullah Al Rawahi,
both win themselves a
chance to compete for
the championship title
in the senior and junior
categories, respectively.
Going up against 250 of
the world’s best karting
drivers who will be racing
in this prestigious event
to be held at the Al Ain Raceway, much hope lies on the shoulders of these
young racers, a burden that many believe they are capable of carrying.
“This is a great opportunity to represent Oman, and I am so proud of our
achievements,” said Sanad pointing out that the preparations were already in
full swing. Abdullah is positive that he will be successful in both the events,
saying, “I will do my best to get the maximum experience and get the best
results for my country. I also look forward to my participation in the Under 18
World Championship Academy Trophy Award, which carries the FIA campaign
to promote road safety.”
To qualify for a race of this magnitude, drivers must first prove themselves in
their respective countries, and only then are the best chosen to compete in
the Grand Finals.
Father and manager of the young racers, Suleiman Al Rawahi, says, “The
plan is for the boys to move up to Formula racing through careful planning;
this requires continues support from the country’s private and public sector.
We hope that through our success we can attain the funding and support
needed.”
We at Y wish them the very best.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the figures given at the
bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following
the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, form
left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below
the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of
the nine numbers only once.
