The Seven Themes of
Catholic Social Teaching (CST)
More on
Back Page
The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of
wisdom about building a just society and living lives
of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society.
Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated
through a tradition of papal, conciliar, and episcopal
documents. The depth and richness of this tradition
can be understood best through a direct reading of
these documents. The following brief reflections
highlight several of the key themes that are at the
heart of our Catholic social tradition.
Life and Dignity of the Human Person
The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is
sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the
foundation of a moral vision for society. This belief is
foundational to all of the principles of our social
teaching. In our society, human life is under direct attack
from abortion and euthanasia. The value of human
life is being threatened by human trafficking,
cloning, embryonic stem cell research, and the use of
the death penalty. The intentional targeting of civilians
in war or terrorist attacks is always wrong. Catholic
teaching also calls on us to work to avoid war.
Nations must protect the right to life by finding increasingly
effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve
them by peaceful means. We believe that every
person is precious, that people are more important
than things, and that the measure of every institution
is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity
of the human person.
Rights and Responsibilities
The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity
can be protected and a healthy community can be
achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities
are met. Therefore, every person has a
fundamental right to life and a right to those things
required for human decency. Corresponding to these
rights are duties and responsibilities--to one another,
to our families, and to the larger society.
Call to Family, Community, and Participation
The person is not only sacred but also social.
How we organize our society -- in economics and
politics, in law and policy -- directly affects human
dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in
community. Marriage and the family are the central
social institutions that must be supported and
strengthened, not undermined. We believe people
have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking
together the common good and well-being of all,
especially the poor and vulnerable.
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable
members are faring. In a society marred by deepening
divisions between rich and poor, our tradition recalls
the story of the Last Judgment (Mt 25) and instructs
us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.
The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
The economy must serve people, not the other
way around. Work is more than a way to make a living;
it is a form of continuing participation in Gods
creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected,
then the basic rights of workers must be respected--
the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages,
to the organization and joining of unions, to private
property, and to economic initiative.
Solidarity
We are one human family whatever our national,
racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences.
We are our brothers and sisters keepers, wherever
they may be. Loving our neighbor has global dimensions
in a shrinking world. At the core of the virtue of
solidarity is the pursuit of justice and peace. Pope
Paul VI taught that if you want peace, work for justice.
The Gospel calls us to be peacemakers. Our love
for all our sisters and brothers demands that we promote
peace in a world surrounded by violence and
conflict.
Care for God's Creation
We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship
of creation. Care for the earth is not just an
Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We
are called to protect people and the planet, living our
faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. This
environmental challenge has fundamental moral and
ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.
Is there interest in a
widow/widowers group?
The Bereavement Ministry has been approached
by several people inquiring about a group for widows
and widowers at OLA.
They are not seeking a formal support group but
an outreach and social opportunity for those who
wish to occasionally get together with others who
have lost a spouse. The purpose would be friendship
and casual support in a welcoming and familiar environment.
We would appreciate your comments so we can
assess whether or not there is enough interest to organize
a new group at OLA. Please feel free to contact
Bereavement Ministers Dolores Simmons (946-
Action Alert...
Ask your assembly member to vote NO on SB131
A controversial measure by a Bay Area legislator that would temporarily eliminate the civil statute of
limitations for a select minority of child abuse victims – but prevent the overwhelming majority of victims
from ever getting their day in court – is being considered by the California Assembly.
Your emails made an impact in the Senate. They influenced many Senators to vote NO or not to vote at
all, so please [go to www.cacatholic.org and click “Take Action/Action Alert”] now to tell your Assembly
Member to stop this bill!
The bill is controversial because it says one thing and does another. It says it helps victims and protects
children when in reality it does nothing for most victims, nothing to most abusers, and makes a mockery of
equal protection under the law.
1. SB 131 will prevent most of today’s victims from ever getting their day in court. Victims who were
abused by teachers or other public school workers are not covered by the bill. Public schools cannot be
sued for any abuse that took place before 2009.
2. SB 131 protects the actual abuser from being sued. The change in statute of limitations only applies to
private or non-profit employers like the YMCA or the Church. It does not apply to public schools, other
public agencies or even to the perpetrator himself.
3. SB 131 only applies to private and non-profit employers – like private schools, the Catholic Church,
the YMCA, Little League and other, similar organizations.
4. SB 131 does nothing to increase criminal penalties
against the actual abuser. The bill increases penalties on
private employers, but not on the perpetrator himself. SB
131 proposes no increase in prison time, and more importantly,
no increase in the criminal statute of limitations
that would let victims get the justice they deserve.
The California legislature already passed a similar measure
10 years ago which eliminated the statute of limitation for a
one year window (2003) resulting in lawsuits against private
and Catholic employers – some of which dated back more than
50 years. SB 131 would restart that process again.
The California Catholic Conference is opposing this bill,
along with the YMCA/YWCA, the California Council of Nonprofit
Organizations, and other religious organizations and private
schools.
– California Conference of Catholic Bishops
NOTE – The Tidings newspaper printed two articles worth
reading: 1) “The Case against SB 131” by UCLA Law Professor
2) “Proposed repeal of statute is discriminatory, say
opponents” by Editor Mike Nelson (5-24-13). These are
Helping victims of abuse
The first obligation of the Church with
regard to victims is for healing and reconciliation.
The Archdiocese continues to reach
out to every person who has been a victim of
sexual abuse as a minor by anyone in church
service, whether that abuse is recent or occurred
in the past.
The Archdiocese’s Victims Assistance
Ministry helps victims/survivors who have
been victims of sexual abuse by - priests,
deacons, or individuals representing the
Catholic Church. The Victim Assistance Coordinator,
Suzanne Healy, is available to
help victims/survivors make a formal complaint
of abuse to the Archdiocese, and to
obtain support for the needs of the individual
and families. Suzanne Healy can be reached
Catholic Social Teaching and Luke’s Gospel
Luke’s Gospel this Sunday presents the parable of the
Good Samaritan. We need to understand some things
which make the story more profound. Most of us have
heard of the strained relations between the Jews and the
Samaritans. However, we may not be as aware that the
road from Jerusalem to Jericho where the story is set was
known as the “Way of Blood” because of its danger and
the criminal elements which haunted it. From the perspective
of Catholic Social Teaching, we only need to look at
those individuals who come upon the injured and beaten
man in the road. The first two quite likely passed him because
they feared for their own safety. They asked themselves
the question, “What will happen to me if I stop to
help him?” It was the Samaritan on the other hand who
asked the question, “What will happen to him if I do not
help him?” Catholic Social Teaching challenges us with
tough questions – risks. Jesus makes it clear that he expects
us to truly follow him, to take those risks and to
reach out in many ways to others. He puts it quite bluntly,
in fact: “Go thou and do likewise.” (See also Page 2.)
OLA Strategic Goal No. 5
By 2017, OLA will increase awareness and
understanding of Catholic Social Teaching
(CST) by moving 300 people into action from
into our liturgies and homilies;
Recruiting, creating, informing, teaching,
and sustaining diverse groups to participate
in the Good News People program
where, as disciples of Christ, they become
motivated to take action.
Save the date: Sept. 11
JustAct Ministry at OLA will host a viewing
of the movie “Not My Life” about the critical
