Parish Mission Statement
We, the People of God, under the patronage
of Our Lady of the Assumption, are called to
be disciples of Jesus Christ.
As members of the Body of Christ,
gathering for worship around the Table of
Word and Sacrament, we commit ourselves
to love and support one another in faith, hope,
and love.
We are sent forth as apostles, in the power
of the Holy Spirit, to make the Good News
present and alive in our world through
evangelization and hospitality, healing
and service, education and the establishment
of justice.
Living Your Strengths
Alleluia! Christ is risen and is victorious over
sin and death! We are good stewards of our
faith if, like St. Paul, we share this good news
whenever and wherever we can.
Ministries of service
Many gifts of time and talent were offered in service to
enrich the worship spaces and liturgies of our Lenten, Holy
Week and Easter celebrations. We celebrate the
contribution of liturgy planners, lectors, hospitality ministers,
Eucharistic ministers, music minister, priests and deacons;
parish administrative and maintenance staff; Knights of
Columbus and OLA School students under Lena Kho who
produced Stations of the Cross; planners and presenters of
our Lenten workshops and parish mission; gardeners who
brought flowers and plants; the team under Mary Lou Butler
who executed successive environment changes; Uturn
Ministry coordination, cooks and servers at Lenten soup
meals; the families who made it possible for the volunteers
and staff to give their time; and especially our parish family
for joining in our time of preparation, remembrance and
celebration.

The Living Your Strengths workshops
took off in Lent with 90 parishioners signed
up for four weekly sessions on two days,
facilitated by Ann Brown, Tina Gutierrez,
Sharon Hueckel, Mary Jean Neault and
Stacey Weiner.
“Everyone involved seemed to have an
enjoyable and meaningful experience,” Ann
reports. “We all felt a particular grace in
interacting and learning from the old friends
and new friends who shared their time and
insights with us.”
All the participants took an online assessment
through Gallup Press, publishers of the
book used as a guide for the sessions. There
was an opportunity for personal reflection
and sharing in small and large groups about
how to live out of one’s strengths rather than
focusing on weaknesses.
Comments included – “life-changing,”
“well-organized,” “fun,” “encouraging,”
“a gift,” “helpful” and “perfect.”
Next up – two more workshops this year
during the summer and fall.

A Disciple’s Reflection on the Gospel...
Easter: Our own story
Today Christians around the world gather to celebrate the centrality
of their faith – that the Lord Jesus suffered, died, and rose from
the dead to bring new life to all who believe. What difference can
Easter really make in our lives?
Any difference that Easter can bring can be summed up in one
word: hope. Picture yourself as one of the followers of Jesus of Nazareth.
The one for whom you had given up everything, the one in
whom you had placed all your trust, the one who seemed to be the
way to freedom from fear – this one had been put to death in the most
horrifying way. He was nailed to a cross, and on that cross it seemed
that hope itself breathed its last. Have you ever felt that way – that
hope had breathed its last? For many who lose a cherished job, a
spouse to death or divorce, a child to drug abuse or disease, there just
doesn’t seem to be any hope remaining. This was the kind of despair
that Peter, John, and Mary of Magdala must have been feeling on that
first day of the week.
The Gospel story today is, in a nutshell, the story of our very
own lives. It is a story of restored hope. Like those disciples, we must
always, when in despair, see and believe that Jesus Christ rose from
the dead. When we place our belief in the power of God to raise Jesus
from the dead, we also place our belief in the power of God to deliver
us from the death of despair, malaise, and hopelessness. This is at the
heart of why we come to church this day. We look to the empty tomb
to find hope that was lost. It is for this that we raise heart and voice in
an endless “Alleluia!”

A Prayer for Job Seekers
Gracious and loving God, you know our need for meaningful
work. Send your Holy Spirit to guide those who are searching
for employment. Help them to recognize the gifts and talents
you have given them. Deepen their desire to follow your will.
Inspire them as they contact potential employers. Give them
patience as they wait for responses.
Shelter them from feelings of rejection. Protect them from
discouragement. Give them courage to overcome fear.
Shower on them the graces they need to persevere. Let this
time of searching become an opportunity to grow in faith, to
cultivate the virtue of hope, and to experience your healing
love.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Outreach
Bundle Sunday is April 26
St. Vincent de Paul Society will be sponsoring a Bundle Sunday in
two weeks, and providing information on the patio next weekend.
A truck will be parked in the OLA lot from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on
Sunday, April 26 to collect donations of usable clothing, shoes, linens,
house wares and other items in good condition.
The Society is also in need of furniture and
large appliances. Arrangements may be made for
pick-up of larger items by calling (800) 974-3571.
For 100 years, this outreach organization has
been serving the needy in our Archdiocese
through its center for the homeless, a summer
camp for children, and a thrift store with a free
distribution program and low, discount prices.

Celebration of African culture
Fr. John Bosco has invited a Ugandan choir from St.
Genevieve Parish in Panorama City to enliven our
11 a.m. Mass on Sunday, April 19 with African drum
rhythms and a song or two in local dialects. In the auditorium
following the Mass, parishioners will be treated
to a dance exhibition by the same group, as well as educational
displays, African games for children, and a
sampling of African dishes. This celebration of African
culture will be hosted by ViNA Associates, the parish
group that supports Village Network Africa, a non-profit
organization founded by parishioner Anita Boling.
OLA Summer Camp for ages 4-12
OLA’s Summer Day Camp program has entertained
and educated children for 34 years under the direction of
Margie Robinson. This year’s program runs from June 18
through July 31 on the OLA campus weekdays from 6:30
a.m. to 6 p.m. Register your children from 4 to 12 years of
age now by calling 626-3596, ext. 227. Daily activities
include arts and crafts, fun with science, Noah’s Ark, dancercise,
drama club, cooking class, sports, and gardening –
with special entertainment on Fun Fridays such as magic
shows, raffles, and visiting exhibitions. Rates are available
by week, day and “minimum day.”

Baptisms Information about Baptism is available at the Welcome Cart on
the patio after weekend Masses. All parents must attend a Baptism Orientation
during which a date for the Baptism may be reserved. Please allow four to six
weeks before the Baptism. English Orientation begins with 9 a.m. Mass on the
first Sunday of the month, followed by a one-hour meeting. The child’s parents
and godparents are then given instruction at a two-hour Baptism Preparation
Class at 7 p.m. in the church on the second Monday of the month. The
Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on various Saturdays.
