Promoting Indo-Swiss Scientific Collaboration
Workshop - call for participation
Ecology and conservation of Chilika Lake, India
November 25-26, 2011
The Swiss Embassy, in collaboration with KIIT University and the Chilika Lake Development Authority
(CDA), organize a two days workshop gathering Indian and Swiss scientists on November 25-26,
2011. The event will take place at the Wetland Research Centre of the Chilika Lake Development
Authority. During the workshop the Swiss participants will get familiar with the main issues and
ongoing research related to the Chilika Lake ecology and conservation. In addition the participants will
have the unique opportunity to assess the options for bilateral collaborations with selected Indian
counterparts in their field of interest.
Chilika Lake was chosen for this initiative as it has a remarkable potential for original research in
different disciplines within the natural and social sciences. The lagoon, which extends over
approximately 1000km 2 , is characterized by a very rich biodiversity and the key socio-economic
contribution it brings to the region. For an introduction on Chilika Lake, see for instance CDA website
(www.chilika.com), Asish K. Ghosh et al. (2006), Dujovny (2009, pp. 192-195), or Sutaria (2009, pp.
21-33). 1 A location map of Chilika Lake can be found at the end of this document.
Overall, scholarly work on issues related to the lagoon is relatively scanty, but may provide a platform
for future research proposals. Existing studies comprise of research on areas as -1) water quality (see
e.g. A.P. Patra et al., 2010; Satyanarayan Panigrahi et al., 2007); -2) the lagoon sediments (e.g. Asha
Khandelwal et al., 2008; Kwang-Seuk Jeong et al., 2008; Satya Panigrahi et al., 2009; Unmesh
Chandra Panda et al., 2006); -3) biodiversity (e.g. A. Mohapatra et al., 2007); -4) biology (see e.g. J.
K. Patra et al., 2009; T. Raja Swaminathan et al., 2010); or -5) political and human ecology (e.g.
Dujovny, 2009; Sarmistha Pattanaik, 2007).
All researchers, who are interested to participate, are invited to send in a short CV and a brief
description of their main research focus to mattia.celio@eda.admin.ch, until Mai 31, 2011.
