What does life on "The Good Ship
Jarvis" me'an to me? It means ;learning
and tradition, work and fun, sltudy and
relaxation. It means participation in and
enjoyment of a great va6e!ty of :sports,
clubs, and o1Jher extI'a-curricuIar~tivities.
It means knowledge, friendship,
some s ' oda:l life, and interelSting occurrences
in everyday life.
The "Jarvis" is steeped in tradition,
but her mates a.re fuH of freslh, new ideas
for helping to make her run mOire smoothly.
Sihe is lucky to be mannned by such a
good crew and to be Is,aHing on cours,e
by means of ,theoharts and leadership and
guidance of wise and efficient officers.
She even has ,a patron saint in the pe~son
of Minerva, Goddess of Wisdom. Her
motto ,is: "Nil decErt, invita Minerva,"
w!hiclh means: "Nothing is fitting, Miner-
va unwi1lling," or "In allthdt you do, let
wisdom he your guide." ',I
Part of the tradition connected with
'all this ifS a high slclholastic and athletic
rewrd which ha.s been maintained by
crew members throughout the one hunured
and fifty-three years of life on the
"Jarvis". The differ:eillit nationaIJties represented
by her erew give the ,ship 'still
another, a co,smo:pol:itan asped.
I enjoy being on the "Jarvis" becaus,e
of the gr€la:t number of adivities and
aspects whioh tare contaiined in her hoMo
Thi,s shi1p :has been ~ebuilt several times
and !her saHs are ragged; butwthen I
walk on heir marble decks, I feel that, no
mrutter what, she wHl always retain the
s.ame atmosphere of challenge land interest
and promise tJhwt !she has always had.
All this and more are what life on the
"Jarvis" mean to me.
