3.5.2 Experimental Procedures<br />

The experiment is conducted on one subject per session basis. First, the subject is briefed<br />

about the objectives of this research and consent to participate was obta<strong>in</strong>ed. Second, the<br />

subject is provided with <strong>in</strong>structions and demonstrations about how to use and explore<br />

the HDS system, as the prelim<strong>in</strong>ary tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Assistance/explanation is readily provided if<br />

the subject has any difficulty dur<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Third, the subject is allowed to test the<br />

controls, navigate, and experience the system for about 5 m<strong>in</strong>utes before the actual<br />

experiment.<br />

Then, the subject is given a maximum of 20 m<strong>in</strong>utes to perform learn<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Observation is carried out simultaneously. The subject is given a writ<strong>in</strong>g pad<br />

and pen for notes and sketches, thus enabl<strong>in</strong>g easier and clearer explanation by the<br />

subject. The <strong>in</strong>formation is crucial and enlighten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> answer<strong>in</strong>g the thesis question of<br />

‘what <strong>in</strong>formation was needed to perform learn<strong>in</strong>g’. Later, the subject has to fill <strong>in</strong> the<br />

questionnaire with<strong>in</strong> 20 m<strong>in</strong>utes.<br />

3.6 Data Collection<br />

All data, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g performance tests, questionnaires and transcripts, or work sheets (if<br />

any) are kept confidential and stored <strong>in</strong> special files with anonymous filenames. The data<br />
