‘A North Country sampler’
Area music lovers will be
delighted by “A North
Country Sampler” – a joint
concert featuring favorite
local musicians. Choral
groups Windrose and
Pumpkin Hill Singers will be
joined by harpist, Bill Tobin,
and The Bob Amos Band.
This year’s presentation is an
outgrowth of last year’s
well-received presentation
which included the three ensemble
groups. This year
those musicians have invited
Bill Tobin to join by sharing
some of his favorite harp
solos including his own
compositions.
The joint concert began last
year when the Pumpkin Hill
Singers invited the other groups
to join in their regular spring
concert. “We were overjoyed at
the response that we got from

Windrose is a popular close
harmony group which is well
known for its animated presentations
and quirky sense of
humor. Their eclectic repertoire
includes jazz, popular, and traditional
songs. The Bob Amos
Band is a rousing combination
of instrumentalists and vocalists
with a distinctive and uplifting
sound. The group features the
guitarist and singer Bob Amos
as well as members of his family
and other area instrumentalists.
In ”A Northeast Sampler”,
the Pumpkin Hill Singers will
present a new song with lyrics by
tenor Steve Parker and arrangement
by Susan Terry. “I heard
this melody, which was written
by an Irish musician, Daithe
Sproule,” says Steve Parker, “and
loved it so much I had to put
words to it”. Parker has written
lyrics which sound Irish in origin
and tell the story of a magical
musical event in a young
man’s life. Also included in their
portion of the concert will be
another new song, “Blessing”.
“This song is by one of our favorite
musicians, Donna Hebert,
a French Canadian fiddler and
singer from Amherst, MA.
Steve and I have been singing
this song for a number of
years”, says group director Susan
Terry, “and all along I’ve known
I had to arrange it for four-part
chorus. I’m really excited to be
sharing this with our audiences
this year”.
The Danville concert will be
Sunday, May 23rd at the North
Congregational Church at 7pm.
The concert will be in two sets
separated by a brief intermission.
A concert will also be held
the preceding night Saturday,
May22nd at the North Congregational
Church in St. Johnsbury.
Saturday night’s concert
will benefit Habitat for Humanity.
NEK Habitat announces new goals
Northeast Habitat for
Humanity will offer a
new program for small exterior
repairs and improvements,
and hopes to break
ground on its first house during
2010. These are the two
main goals set by its Steering
Committee at its February
meeting. In addition, the twoyear
old organization plans to
reach out to more families in
need and more communities
during the year.
Called A Brush with Kindness
by the parent organization Habitat
for Humanity International,
the small projects program offers
help to homeowners with painting,
repairs, weatherization, landscaping,
clean-up, and small property
improvements such as stairs,
ramps, or porches. These projects
are funded with a no-interest,
non-profit loan, often using donated
materials, and completed by
local volunteers. Project partners
are chosen on the basis of need,
ability to provide “sweat equity,”
and ability to repay the small loan,
usually less than $200. Application
forms will be available
through local churches and agencies,
or by contacting Northeast
Kingdom Habitat for Humanity;

Northeast Kingdom Habitat
for Humanity is a local project
committee guided by the Upper
Valley affiliate in White River
Junction. Starting its third year,
NEK Habitat is restoring services
provided by an affiliate which operated
here from 1988-2002. In
its two years of existence, the new
organization has worked on two
single family homes, and seven
smaller projects in six towns.
NEK Habitat for Humanity is
governed by a 12-person Steering
Committee whose members are

West Burke; Sara Heft, Danville;
Cyndy Nye, St. Johnsbury; Jody
Paine, Danville; Rev. Alan Parker,

Beth Williams, Danville.
African safari helps
support NEK youth
The two African Safari
Packages from the famous
Zulu Nyala Compound
in South Africa are just a part
of the exciting live and silent
auctions at Northeast Kingdom
Youth Services’ JUMP
Jazz Jubilee (JJJ). The JJJ will
be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday
May 1 at the St. Johnsbury
Country Club and all proceeds
support NEKYS’ Jump
and Everybody Wins! mentoring
programs.
Jim and Sally Newell successfully
bid the two Safari packages
at the JJJ auction and went to
South Africa with another couple.
In an update of their amazing experience,
Sally said “the accommodations
were very
comfortable, the food was fantastic
and the wildlife tours were remarkable.
It was all we expected
and more – just a wonderful trip.”

young people. The vital one-onone
attention that mentors provide
promotes healthy
development and protects kids
from risky behavior at a critical
age. You can help make a difference
in a child’s life in many ways.
