THIRTEENTH DECORATOR SHOW HOUSE SET TO OPEN IN SPRING 2015
BY LIZ ROGG-IVES
Junior League of Hartford (JLH) is proud to announce the 13th Decorator Show House, set to open in April 2015. With the help of a
team of regional designers, the interior and surrounding grounds of a unique house in the greater Hartford area will be transformed
into a beautifully decorated home with upscale landscaping.
The home will be opened to the public for viewing over a three week period during April and May. Past homes have had more than
5,000 visitors tour the Show House and take part in our special events. This year we hope to exceed that number.
Over the past 30 years, the JLH has raised more than $1.5 million through Show House, the JLH’s most successful fundraiser. All of
the proceeds from Show House support the mission of the JLH to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve
our community. Past projects have included Kids in the Kitchen, Souper Sustainers, Freshplace and our current collaboration with
Junior Achievement of Southwest New England resulting in our new project, Career Connections for Young Women.
We are currently seeking a home, preferably with historical significance and architectural details, in the Hartford and West Hartford
community to be transformed into the next Decorator Show House. The home should be a minimum of 5,000 square feet. If you
know of a house please contact the JLH by calling 860-233-4300 or emailing info@jlhartford.org.
In connection with Show House, we are looking for both individual and corporate support as well as local artisans who would be interested
in partnering with the JLH to sell their wares in our boutique at the home. Sponsors will be displayed on our website with a
link to their individual website and given add space in our program book.
Please see the forms on page 6-7 for more information on supporting the Decorator Show House.
BY MEAGHAN COOPER
The Junior League of Hartford (JLH) fall provisional class is in full swing. The 27
provisional members joined 20 spring provisionals for a fall kick-off meeting at Junior
Achievement (JA) of
Southwest New England,
where they were
introduced to the JLH’s
community impact focus
and new collaboration
with JA.
The provisional class is
eager to become involved
in the JLH’s
programs, but in the
meantime, is focused
on better understanding
the JLH and getting to
know one another
through social and
community-focused
activities.
Provisionals and their
advisors spent a chilly October morning at Winding Trails in Farmington practicing
their problem solving skills and working as a team (pictured above). No one expected
the morning to involve singing, but we gave a few spirited renditions of
“Row, Row, Row Your Boat” in order to successfully complete a challenge.
Up next are the two fall provisional projects – preparing and serving a hot lunch at A
House of Bread and delivering furniture and household items to A Hand Up.
The fall provisional class thanks the provisional committee co-chairs and members
for being so helpful and the JLH for welcoming us into your ranks.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY LAURA HUGHES
This newsletter arrives at a time when we are in a season of giving. Giving is something
that has defined the members of the Junior League of Hartford (JLH) for 93
years. Our members give their time, treasures and talent year after year to the Greater
Hartford community through our mission-based activities.
Our members have been connecting with other JLH members and the community over
that 93-year history. It is always great to know how deep our connection to the community
is by remembering that we have been the Junior League of Hartford since
1921. Since then, we have been running the Clothes Horse, our “thriftique,” since
1946 and have been providing nutritious meals through Souper Sustainers since 1986.
This year, we will be presenting our 13th Show House, a tradition that began in 1979.
The 2014-15 league year is continuing to be one in which many opportunities are arising,
allowing our members to continue making connections internally and externally.
In late October, I had the opportunity to spend some time with a large number of our
JLH past presidents. I was privileged to be among such esteemed women. They are
all connected by the role that I now hold as caretaker of the organization. With this
role, I appreciate those who have come before me for their commitment to preserving
our great history. This role in the community requires that we work as a team to maintain
and grow each year. We hold the office of president for a very short time and we
never do this alone.
It is time to celebrate the connections that you make with the Junior League of Hartford
and look ahead to the opportunities offered by the JLH in 2015. As JLH members,
we take what we learn and experience and apply those skills to build a positive future
for our organization.
As we look at the present, the JLH is quite healthy. We have a membership of 445
total members, 292 of whom are sustainers. This year, many of these sustainers are
participating directly with Show House committees and others are active with the Sustainer
Council. Our board of directors is an engaged team of women who are strategic minded and cognizant of the needs of our members.
Our active and provisional members are our present and future treasures. Their resources and energy are motivating.
The JLH is embarking on the pilot year of Career Connections for Young Women (CCYW), a collaborative project with Junior Achievement
of Southwest New England. CCYW is a career academy for teenage girls that will teach the participants career skills and introduce
them to successful career women of the community. This first academy is being offered in the winter of 2015 with plans to host a Career
Conference for upwards of 200 girls in the fall of 2015. Our members are preparing for the launch of this program.
Additionally, JLH members actively participate in the community through short community projects with our Done in A Day program and
Community Outreach projects that focus on our current impact area of Women and Girls Overcoming Obstacles. Opportunities are available
throughout the year to participate on projects such as these.
In the spring of 2015, the JLH will be presenting the Decorator Show House. Since 1979, our show houses have raised over $1.5 million
toward the mission of the JLH. So much excitement and buzz surrounds such a large project and our members will be working on its
many facets throughout the year. Watch for the fun opportunities that accompany this endeavor.
Through our Communications Council, we keep you informed of our activities. We have a robust website and have a presence on social
media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Also, we have a blog and a Facebook page for Clothes Horse. Check us out on these sites
and watch for more to come.
When planning for the JLH, leadership is always looking to our mission of “promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women,
and improving communities through the effective action of trained volunteers.” Through these actions, we can become the civic leaders
of our communities.
After reflecting on the past, present and future, I would like you to think about connections that you make or have made through the JLH.
Please continue that journey through 2015 by participating at some level.
DONE IN A DAY ASSISTS CCMC, PREPARES FOR HOLIDAY SEASON
BY SARAH NEEDHAM & JACKIE STONE
The “Done in a Day Committee” has gotten the League year off to a great start! In October, we supported our longtime partner, Connecticut
Children’s Medical Center (CCMC), by hosting a volunteer event at their annual Storybook Gala. This fundraiser, now in its
22nd year, has brought in more than $2.5 million for CCMC, which will be used to support strategic initiatives and grants for patients
and staff. We are proud of our partnership with CCMC and look forward to
continuing the relationship for years to come.
Additionally, committee members organized a “Done in a Meeting” (DIAM)
project that followed our October General Meeting. League members helped
create decorations to be used in our Winter Wonderland event, which has
benefited many community partners over the years, including Peter's Retreat,
Loaves and Fishes and My Sister's Place, among others.
In an effort to utilize the non-monetary resources that the League provides
(namely, the hard work of our members!), we run this annual DIAM event to
produce a large volume of decorations that would otherwise be too expensive
to purchase. The project not only saves the organization money but it
also provides members who are not able to attend Winter Wonderland the
opportunity to be a part of the event.
We have lots of great events planned for the remainder of the year and are
excited to see how our efforts continue to positively impact our community
partners and engage our members.
THE CLOTHES HORSE WELCOMES NEW MANAGER
BY TIFFANY CUTTING & LAURIE POPE
Over the past few years, The Clothes Horse, Junior League of Hartford’s longestrunning
fundraiser, has seen some amazing changes, including the rebranding and
refresh process of the store. That process, which officially began in 2010, has led to
the new look of our “thriftique,” the integration of social media for marketing and
public relations, and even recent changes in personnel.
Over the summer, the JLH posted a position and interviewed qualified candidates
for a new store manager. Through this process, we identified an individual we felt
would be able to take The Clothes Horse to the next level and continue the refresh
efforts that had been made up to this point.
The JLH is excited to welcome Coreen Sundee as interim manager of The Clothes
Horse. Coreen, who started in September, has already brought a new perspective
and vision to The Clothes Horse. Feedback from staff, the JLH membership and
customers has been overwhelmingly positive. Coreen has a long history with the
JLH and understands the importance and value of The Clothes Horse to the League.
Coreen joined the JLH 20 years ago after moving to Hartford following her graduation
from college. In her years as a member of the League, she served in many leadership roles,
including Clothes Horse committee chair and Fund Development Council Director. She has
been a member of the Board of Directors many times and was President of the League in
2007, the year the Backpack program and collaboration with Chrysalis Center and Foodshare
began.
Coreen describes the store as “a hidden gem” and is committed to helping The Clothes
Horse achieve its true potential as a major source of funds for our organization and projects.
Please stop by the store to meet our new manager and, of course, do some shopping while
you’re there. Merchandise changes daily – you never know what fantastic deal awaits you.
The Clothes Horse store hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday,
10:00 am to 4:00 pm. We hope to see you soon!
CAREER CONNECTIONS FOR YOUNG WOMEN TO LAUNCH SOON
BY DOROTHY MEGGIE
As announced in the Spring 2014 edition of League Lines, Junior League of Hartford (JLH) is partnering with Junior Achievement
(JA) of Southwest New England for a new community impact project, initially named Career Connection for Girls.
Since this announcement, members of the New Project Development (NPD) Committee have been working with JA members on
a steering committee to plan and develop the program. The effort continued throughout the summer and at the start of the JLH’s
2014-2015 year, the NPD Committee decided it was time to “rebrand” itself with a new name reflective of this exciting new initiative:
Career Connections for Young Women (CCYW).
The goals of the project include increasing career readiness, financial literacy, self-efficacy and self-confidence. These initiatives
are developed to be consistent with and further the JLH impact area of empowering women and girls to overcome obstacles.
The team outlined the components of the full CCYW program, including: a one-day fall career conference for 200 girls, a 14-week
Career Academy and job shadowing opportunity for 25 girls and graduation recognition event. The full program starts in fall 2015,
while a pilot program, with a seven-week Career Academy, will be held this winter (February - March).
At the October JLH General Membership Meeting, the CCYW leaders engaged members in an “elevator speech” exercise,
providing buzzwords and phrases to capture the essence of what the program aims to accomplish. Members broke out into
groups, and used the buzzwords to create a two-minute, clever and catchy “pitch” crafted to explain the new program. They each
provided their own distinct spin on CCYW and their content will be used to populate official talks track or elevator speeches to
appear soon on the CCYW homepage.
There will be volunteer opportunities in each facet of the CCYW program and JA will provide training to volunteers before they
participate. Many members of the JLH exhibited great interest in the program and are eager to get involved.
The committee continues to meet regularly to discuss and decide on the CCYW curriculum, schedule and participant selection.
As the program is finalized, the CCYW committee will be communicating with the JLH to keep members up-to-date on its progress
and volunteer opportunities.
