Information Technology Digital Literacy and Citizenship Digital Literacy and Citizenship is important and will be supported by the school’s Acceptable Use Agreements (AUA) for students, staff and visitors in order to protect the interests and safety of the whole school community. It is linked to the following mandatory school policies: child protection, safeguarding, health and safety, home–school agreements, and behaviour/student discipline (including the anti-bullying and cyber-bullying) policy. Digital Literacy and Citizenship in the Curriculum Technology and online resources are used across the curriculum. ACS believe it is essential for Digital Literacy and Citizenship guidance to be given to students on a regular and meaningful basis. Digital Literacy and Citizenship is embedded within our curriculum and we continually look for new opportunities to promote Digital Literacy and Citizenship. • The school has a framework for teaching Internet skills • The school provides opportunities within a range of curriculum areas to teach about Digital Literacy and Citizenship • Students are educated on the dangers of technologies that may be encountered outside school • Students are aware of the relevant legislation when using the Internet such as data protection and intellectual property. This legislation may limit what students want to do but it also serves to protect them • Students are taught about copyright and respecting other people’s information, images, (as part of academic honesty) etc. through discussion, modeling and activities • Students are aware of the impact of cyber-bullying and know how to seek help if they are affected by any form of online bullying. Students are also aware of where to seek advice or help if they experience problems when using the Internet and related technologies; i.e. parent/guardian, counsellor, nurse, teacher/trusted staff member, child protection officer or organisations • Students are taught to critically evaluate materials and learn good searching skills through cross curricular teacher models and discussions Parental Involvement We believe that it is essential for parents/guardians to be fully involved with supporting the Digital Literacy and Citizenship programme both inside and outside of school. • The school will disseminate information to parents relating to Digital Literacy and Citizenship where appropriate • The school will hold regular information meetings where technology and Digital Literacy and Citizenship issues can be discussed The Internet At all times, the Internet is an open communication medium available to all.. The Internet is an invaluable resource for education and social interaction. Managing the Internet • Users will have access to Internet resources through the school’s ethernet and mobile Internet technology • Users must observe software copyright at all times. It is illegal to copy or distribute school software or illegal software from other sources • No personal, sensitive, confidential or classified information should be posted or disseminated in any way that may compromise its intended restricted audience • ACS will not tolerate the use of the Internet for illegal or inappropriate activities Personal Mobile Devices (including phones, tablets, cameras etc.) • The school allows the use of personal mobile phones, tablets etc. on the school premises • Visitors should be informed to use the “ACS GUEST” network in order to access the school’s wireless network.. • Students are allowed to bring personal mobile devices / phones to school but must not use them for personal purposes within lesson time. Agreement from the classroom teacher should be sought before the devices are used. Mobile devices /phones must be switched to “silent mode” at all times. If this technology is to be used for educational purposes, users should check in advance with the person paying the bill • Mobile devices may be used outside of class time • The school is not responsible for the loss, damage or theft of any personal mobile device • The sending of inappropriate text messages between any members of the school community is not allowed • Permission from any member of the school community must be sought before any image or sound recordings are made on these devices • Users are responsible for ensuring that all personal devices brought into school have no inappropriate or illegal content on the device that may offend other members of the community ACS Hillingdon | 33
