The Queensland Rail story On 1 July 2010, Queensland Rail Limited (Queensland Rail) was established as an integrated passenger and rail infrastructure business servicing the passenger, tourism, resources and freight markets. It is Queensland’s largest government owned corporation (GOC) with more than 7,000 employees, almost $6.6 billion in assets, more than 7,000 kilometres of track and a clear vision to set new standards in safety and customer excellence. Queensland Rail is a new organisation with 145 years of history, and over that time has become an irreplaceable part of communities throughout the state. Strengthening these links and supporting the growing state of Queensland is a core focus of the new Queensland Rail. In establishing the new Queensland Rail, the aim was to create a culture where people work together to achieve a shared goal. This philosophy—‘One Queensland Rail’—is likened to a relay race, with all parts of the business working together to service the customer. The Network function starts the relay with track design, construction and maintenance that ensures the network is ‘fit for purpose’. With the track in place, the baton is passed to Operations, who ensure the delivery of reliable services through available rollingstock, traincrew and safe and efficient train movement control. Taking the baton from Operations to run the final leg, the Customer function ensures those relying on the services, whether as passenger or freight customers, can depend on Queensland Rail to provide the service they expect. These are supported by the corporate enabling functions. Every part of the business, whether network, operations, customer, or supporting functions, understands it plays a vital part in each other’s success. Queensland Rail understands that if the baton is dropped or isn’t delivered at the right time, the customers and shareholders—the people of Queensland—lose too. 2 Queensland Rail Limited 2010/11 Annual Report
