FUND-RAISING GOLF
TOURNAMENTS MAKE SUCH A
Big Difference
As
a professional organization, the
East Tennessee Golf Course
Superintendents Association
(ETGCSA) has a mission to provide for its
members’ continuing education, opportunities
for information exchange and career
assistance. Part of the continuing-education
process involves assisting turf research
efforts in the area that will provide information
useful to ETGCSA members. Part
of the career assistance process is assisting
future golf course superintendents through
scholarships and other grants for educational
opportunities.
ETGCSA has been blessed throughout the
years with great support from its members
and industry partners. This support has made
the ETGCSA Scholarship and Research
Tournament very successful every year,
which has made it possible to provide scholarships
and research grants every year.
The 2008 event, held at Tennessee
National Golf Club, was no exception. With
a full field and a wealth of sponsorships,
ETGCSA was able to have a very successful
event at a time when our economy
would not suggest it possible. As a result of
this event, plus the success of previous
tournaments, ETGCSA was able to award
a total of $3,000 in scholarships to Sean
Elverd at The University of Tennessee, along
with Brad Floyd and Andrew Odom, both
at Walters State. A donation of $500 was
also given to the UT Turf Club, for participation
in the Turf Bowl at the Golf Industry
Show in New Orleans. For research,
$7,500 has been set aside for future grants
when requested.
This year will mark the 19th year since
ETGCSA started this fund-raising event, and
we are looking forward to another successful
tournament at Cattails at Meadowview
Golf Course on October 13, 2009.
