SPRING<br />
Hello<br />
again, everybody! As West <strong>Tennessee</strong> experiences<br />
historic flooding along <strong>the</strong> Mississippi River and its<br />
tributaries, parts <strong>of</strong> East <strong>Tennessee</strong> are still cleaning<br />
up from recent tornadoes. Speaking on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> TTA board and its<br />
members, our thoughts and prayers go out to all individuals who have<br />
suffered from this spring’s natural disasters across <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>ast. I can only<br />
imagine what <strong>the</strong>y are going through right now.<br />
<strong>The</strong> TTA board met recently in Nashville to prepare for <strong>the</strong> next<br />
Conference and Trade Show in January. With an enormous amount <strong>of</strong> work<br />
from <strong>the</strong> TTA Conference and Trade Show Committee, <strong>the</strong> speaker lineup is<br />
very close to being completed. As always, <strong>the</strong> board looks to find ways to<br />
increase your educational and enjoyment experience at <strong>the</strong> conference.<br />
In this copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tennessee</strong> <strong>Turfgrass</strong>, you will find our annual Membership<br />
Directory. This is a great source to network outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Conference and to<br />
connect with industry peers that you may be able to help out and/or use <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

GETTING THROUGH<br />
SUMMER<br />
We<br />
have had quite a start to <strong>the</strong><br />
summer season. <strong>The</strong> volatile<br />
wea<strong>the</strong>r has included very<br />
strong damaging storms and unseasonably<br />
warm temperatures. <strong>The</strong> combination will<br />
make for some interesting situations for us all<br />
as <strong>the</strong> summer progresses.<br />
Take <strong>the</strong> time to work through possible<br />
scenarios that could happen with disease,<br />
insect control, plant health, etc., so you can<br />
better prepare yourself for any challenges that<br />
arise. I have always found that when <strong>the</strong><br />
wea<strong>the</strong>r is out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ordinary, trouble is<br />
always around <strong>the</strong> corner when it comes to<br />
managing <strong>the</strong> turf. Looking at scenarios and<br />
solutions early can help alleviate larger<br />
problems down <strong>the</strong> road and keep <strong>the</strong><br />
maintenance costs down.<br />
A good way to help ga<strong>the</strong>r information is<br />
to network among your peers. Valuable<br />
knowledge can be ga<strong>the</strong>red through <strong>the</strong><br />
experience <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. And don’t forget, you<br />
have <strong>the</strong> ability yourself to help o<strong>the</strong>rs within<br />
our industry by networking and outreaching.<br />
Take <strong>the</strong> time to help whenever you can, as it<br />
is part <strong>of</strong> our core purpose and mission<br />
within our organization. Techniques and<br />
practices that may seem routine to you may<br />
be a new and innovative way for someone<br />
else to make positive improvements.<br />
Also keep in mind that we are an evolving<br />
industry with continuous research and<br />

Happy<br />
summer, everyone! Last year was<br />
a horrible summer for everyone. If<br />
<strong>the</strong> flood didn’t get you, <strong>the</strong> heat<br />
did. It still amazes me how quickly<br />
we were able to get back to normal operating mode here at<br />
Gaylord Springs, and yet I know that <strong>the</strong>re are many people still<br />
struggling with <strong>the</strong> aftermath <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> flooding. I have been praying<br />
that this year would be kinder to everyone, both those <strong>of</strong> us in<br />
turfgrass and everyone else. It looks as though <strong>the</strong> year is shaping<br />
up to be challenging. This spring certainly has been changeable,<br />
with 20-degree temperature swings in <strong>the</strong> high in just a day. <strong>The</strong><br />
heavy rains and tornadoes have brought damage to many courses<br />
and friends. I can only hope that <strong>the</strong> summer will be more<br />
predictable and gentle.<br />
I was asked several weeks ago an interesting question: “What<br />
value does being a member <strong>of</strong> an association bring back to <strong>the</strong><br />
facility, and what does it mean to you” After taking some time to<br />
think about it, I realized that being a member <strong>of</strong> an association<br />
makes this job we do much more than “just a job.” I remember <strong>the</strong><br />
first jobs that I had: I went in, did what I was told and took a<br />
paycheck home for my efforts.<br />
Being a part <strong>of</strong> an association, however, made my job <strong>of</strong> being<br />
a superintendent a pr<strong>of</strong>ession and a passion. It’s being a part <strong>of</strong><br />
something bigger than yourself. Being a member gives you access<br />
to o<strong>the</strong>r people who have ideas that can solve your problems.<br />
Vendors and superintendents are some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most resourceful and<br />
creative people I know. <strong>The</strong>y never let anything stop <strong>the</strong>m from<br />
providing a great product for <strong>the</strong>ir guests.<br />
Membership also gives you access to education and research<br />
that are pertinent to your pr<strong>of</strong>ession and that are easy to find —<br />
not only out <strong>the</strong>re on <strong>the</strong> internet, but right here at home. UT is<br />
doing wonderful work every day for us. Call <strong>the</strong> UT researchers<br />
and ask questions; <strong>the</strong>y are always <strong>the</strong>re to help us.<br />
You also become a part <strong>of</strong> a big family that cares about <strong>the</strong><br />
same things that you do and is going through many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />
things you are. I was so touched by all <strong>the</strong> people last year who<br />
came to physically help us recover from <strong>the</strong> flood and <strong>the</strong> many<br />
people who called just to check up on me. Even though we all<br />
technically are in competition with each o<strong>the</strong>r for <strong>the</strong> same clients,<br />
I’ve never known a superintendent who wouldn’t go and help<br />
someone that asked for help. I’ve called superintendents in o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country (or out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country) that I didn’t know, and<br />
<strong>the</strong>y never hesitated to take <strong>the</strong> time to answer my questions.<br />
In short, being a part <strong>of</strong> an association makes you much more<br />
valuable to your facility because you have <strong>the</strong> knowledge and<br />
support <strong>of</strong> everyone out <strong>the</strong>re doing <strong>the</strong> same job. This “job” <strong>of</strong><br />
being a superintendent gets under your skin; it becomes a part <strong>of</strong><br />
who you are, a part <strong>of</strong> your self-identity. I noticed <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r day,<br />
when I was in a group <strong>of</strong> new people and we were introducing<br />
ourselves, <strong>the</strong>y all said, “I work at XYC, and I do ABC.” When we<br />
introduce ourselves, we say, “I am a golf course superintendent,<br />
and I work at XYZ.”<br />
All <strong>of</strong> this mushy stuff leads to one thing. Take advantage <strong>of</strong><br />
your membership. Look at <strong>the</strong> websites: GCSAA, TGCSA and<br />
TTA. <strong>The</strong>re is great information <strong>the</strong>re and links to o<strong>the</strong>r great<br />
sites. Read <strong>the</strong> magazines: <strong>the</strong> information is timely and up to<br />
date. Come to <strong>the</strong> local TGCSA chapter meetings and <strong>the</strong> TTA<br />
meeting. Meet <strong>the</strong> members, talk to <strong>the</strong>m and don’t be a<br />
wallflower. Network and make relationships. You may not need<br />
<strong>the</strong>m today, but you will tomorrow.<br />
As always, if <strong>the</strong>re is anyway that I can help you, don’t hesitate<br />
to ask. And check your Pesticide Points: everyone needs to<br />
recertify by October <strong>of</strong> this year.<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year<br />
<strong>The</strong> annual TTA Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Year Award is <strong>the</strong> highest honor<br />
bestowed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Tennessee</strong> <strong>Turfgrass</strong><br />
<strong>Association</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong><br />
each year, TTA members nominate<br />
deserving individuals who have<br />
made noteworthy contributions to<br />
<strong>the</strong> turfgrass industry in <strong>Tennessee</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> nominees are reviewed by<br />
<strong>the</strong> TTA Awards & Scholarship<br />
Committee, which makes a<br />
