FROM THE TGCSA PRESIDENT Shelia Finney NEWS FROM THE TGCSA Happy summer, everyone! Last year was a horrible summer for everyone. If the flood didn’t get you, the heat did. It still amazes me how quickly we were able to get back to normal operating mode here at Gaylord Springs, and yet I know that there are many people still struggling with the aftermath of the flooding. I have been praying that this year would be kinder to everyone, both those of us in turfgrass and everyone else. It looks as though the year is shaping up to be challenging. This spring certainly has been changeable, with 20-degree temperature swings in the high in just a day. The heavy rains and tornadoes have brought damage to many courses and friends. I can only hope that the summer will be more predictable and gentle. I was asked several weeks ago an interesting question: “What value does being a member of an association bring back to the facility, and what does it mean to you” After taking some time to think about it, I realized that being a member of an association makes this job we do much more than “just a job.” I remember the first jobs that I had: I went in, did what I was told and took a paycheck home for my efforts. Being a part of an association, however, made my job of being a superintendent a profession and a passion. It’s being a part of something bigger than yourself. Being a member gives you access to other people who have ideas that can solve your problems. Vendors and superintendents are some of the most resourceful and creative people I know. They never let anything stop them from providing a great product for their guests. Membership also gives you access to education and research that are pertinent to your profession and that are easy to find — not only out there on the internet, but right here at home. UT is doing wonderful work every day for us. Call the UT researchers and ask questions; they are always there to help us. You also become a part of a big family that cares about the same things that you do and is going through many of the same things you are. I was so touched by all the people last year who came to physically help us recover from the flood and the many people who called just to check up on me. Even though we all technically are in competition with each other for the same clients, I’ve never known a superintendent who wouldn’t go and help someone that asked for help. I’ve called superintendents in other parts of the country (or out of the country) that I didn’t know, and they never hesitated to take the time to answer my questions. In short, being a part of an association makes you much more valuable to your facility because you have the knowledge and support of everyone out there doing the same job. This “job” of being a superintendent gets under your skin; it becomes a part of who you are, a part of your self-identity. I noticed the other day, when I was in a group of new people and we were introducing ourselves, they all said, “I work at XYC, and I do ABC.” When we introduce ourselves, we say, “I am a golf course superintendent, and I work at XYZ.” All of this mushy stuff leads to one thing. Take advantage of your membership. Look at the websites: GCSAA, TGCSA and TTA. There is great information there and links to other great sites. Read the magazines: the information is timely and up to date. Come to the local TGCSA chapter meetings and the TTA meeting. Meet the members, talk to them and don’t be a wallflower. Network and make relationships. You may not need them today, but you will tomorrow. As always, if there is anyway that I can help you, don’t hesitate to ask. And check your Pesticide Points: everyone needs to recertify by October of this year.
