Mission
The Child Guidance Center of Southern
Connecticut is a professionally-staffed
outpatient mental health center for
children and adolescents who experience
psychological, behavioral, development,
social or family problems.We are
dedicated to reducing emotional
suffering and dysfunctional behavior
and to helping each individual achieve
optimal potential.
Philosophy
Our services are guided by a philosophy that emphasizes understanding the unique qualities and experience of
each child as influenced by the complex interaction of personality, emotional and cognitive development, family
situation, and social environment.
We view psychotherapy with children as a dynamic, interactive assessment and treatment process that examines
problems while building on strengths, and believe our intervention is most effective when parenting figures are
actively involved.
We are committed to making our services accessible to all children and families in the community who can safely
and productively participate in outpatient mental health treatment, while offering referral and advocacy for those
who may require a more restrictive and structured environment.
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
As the Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut(CGC) closes the books on our
52nd year of providing professional mental health services to children, adolescents and their families
we celebrate the community’s collective commitment to help troubled children and families.
There is strong evidence that interagency
collaboration is a more cost effective way to deliver
services. But beyond the considerable financial
advantages, we are committed to collaboration
because it has been our experience that the families
who turn to us for help are far more likely to do
well when the community comes together to
provide a seamless network of support.
Our ability to reach out to children and
teens struggling to cope with traumatic events,
difficult family circumstances or mental illness
is strengthened by the conscientious efforts of
community professionals who identify youngsters
who need our help and make referrals to the
CGC. Our success in helping youngsters overcome
problems and reach optimal potential is dependent
not only on the professional expertise and compassionate
engagement of our staff, but also on the
dedication of highly skilled professionals from a
variety of community agencies that we work with
on a daily basis in each of the four towns we serve.
Our partnerships with local public and non
profit agencies are grounded in our belief that each
child is influenced by the interaction of personality,
emotional and cognitive development, family
situation and social environment. To effect positive
change we are committed to reaching out to our
community partners to help each family access the
specific help and supports they need.
Over the past two decades, the Child
Guidance Center has developed and continues to
coordinate three interagency teams for sexually
abused children, youngsters with serious emotional
and behavioral problems, and families with
multiple needs, especially those with issues of child
abuse and neglect. Our interagency teams bring
together police, court, educational, protective and
human services agencies to enhance the human
services network that responds to our communities’
families when they need help.
In the last year, in recognition of our success
developing and leading strong collaborations, the
Connecticut Department of Children and Families
(DCF) awarded CGC a grant to establish a
Managed Service System. With this initiative we
hired an Enhanced Care Coordinator to work
directly with DCF staff to identify those children
who can return to their homes from long term
placements and to determine the specific supports
that are required to help their families, schools and
communities sustain them.
We are just beginning to see the success of
the efforts that began this winter as several
youngsters who had been in residential treatment
for many months or more than a year, began
returning home.Through collaboration with
agencies like Domus, Family Centers,The
Exchange Club, and countless others, our therapists
are better equipped to help these youngsters and
their families build on their strengths to achieve a
more stable and happier future.
Last year the Child Guidance Center
provided mental health diagnostic and treatment
services to 2229 youngsters and families. In almost
every instance, our work with families included
reaching out to schools and making referrals to
other community agencies to assure that the
broader range of the family’s needs were being met.
And just as each child we work with relies on an extensive network of support
systems, the Child Guidance Center relies on a network of individuals, corporations
and foundations to give us the support we need to help these youngsters and their
families. We are grateful for your generous contributions; for the high priority so many
of you have placed on the mental health services we provide directly to families and
the time we dedicate to collaboration with our community partners.
Sincerely,
Sherry Perlstein, MSW
approach to provide a broad range of mental health assessments and treatment
services tailored to meet the individual needs of children and families referred
under non-emergency circumstances. Comprehensive assessments are conducted
for all children and families referred to CGC. An interdisciplinary team reviews
the assessment and develops a treatment plan tailored to meet the individual
needs of each child and family. Specialized evaluations, such as developmentals
for preschoolers, psychological and neuropsychological testing, and psychiatric
assessments, are provided to understand more complex situations.Treatment
services include individual, group, or family therapy, parent guidance and play
therapy, or medications as needed. Care coordination services are provided to
assist families in accessing other community services to meet the multiple needs
of the child and family.
“The Child Guidance – Community Policing partnership with the Child
Guidance Center has greatly enhanced the Stamford Police Department’s
ability to reach out to families and children who have been exposed to
violence. In the Youth Bureau, our relationship with Child Guidance is
an invaluable tool - both for assisting with and providing follow-up care
for victims, and for providing services to aid in the investigation and
prosecution of sexual abuse investigations. The multi-disciplinary approach
to responding to children exposed to violence and “at-risk” youth is a key
element in the Stamford Police Department’s success in reducing crime in
this city. The Child Guidance Center is an extremely valuable asset to the
Stamford Police Department and the citizens of Stamford.”
“The Sexual Assault Crisis and Education Center is very proud of its strong collaborative relationship with the Child
Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut. Since 1989, the SACEC has been part of the Sexual Abuse Response Team.
We work closely with the staff at CGC to make referrals for child victims and to provide ongoing support and
education to families from the time the abuse is disclosed and throughout the legal process. As the agency responsible
for coordinating the SART team, Child Guidance ensures that a coordinated effort is made to investigate and treat
cases of child sexual abuse reducing trauma to children and their families and increasing the likelihood of the successful
prosecution of sexual offenders.”
