ROOF TILES
Goxhill Hand Made Plain Tile

Goxhill
Hand Made Plain Tile
Hand made clay roof tiles have created many of the finest
and most distinctive roofs in Britain today. For over 300 years,
they have provided a richness of colour and texture which
becomes more attractive with age. Accessories such as feature
tiles for vertical applications and elements such as eyebrow
dormers add to the beauty of buildings whose roofs are
frequently seen as the focal point of their design.
Made for decades from our own reserves of natural alluvial
clay from the banks of the river Humber, every Goxhill Hand
Made Plain Tile is unique, with small variations providing
finished roofs of individual charm and character. All tiles are
fired in the most efficient kilns available, to ensure that quality,
durability and appearance are better today than ever, with a
standard guarantee of 60 years.
Brindle Mix
There is now widespread appreciation of the considerable
added value that plain tile roofs in natural clay can provide.
The incorporation of traditional detailing elements such as
junctions with Sussex cutting or Soldier courses, “Winchester
cutting” at verges, and features such as eyebrow dormers and
turrets illustrates just why the visual identity of plain tiled
buildings is now so highly valued by designers.
Some of today’s best contemporary building designs owe much to the
added scope that clay plain tiles have provided. In part, this is due to
their use for vertical as well as roof tiling. Originally used to provide a
lightweight means of waterproofing the upper floors of timber framed
buildings, vertical cladding is now largely used for its decorative qualities.
Formerly associated with the south east and counties such as Essex in
particular, it is now spreading due to the greater prominence of smaller
developments of distinctive properties.
The use of hand made feature tiles in shapes, such as club pattern and
internal or external angles adds distinguishing finishing touches to both
intricate and simple designs.
Goxhill Hand Made Plain Tiles are available in four standard sandfaced
colours, with the option of the “Brindle Mix” achieved by mixing colours.
Sandtoft also has an extensive range of decorative ridges and finials,
to give any roof an added touch of individuality.
Appearance
Small variations between the tiles and the rich colouring of natural clay
provide roofs of great beauty, which become even more attractive as
they mature. Goxhill Hand Made Plain Tiles are available in four colours
as shown above. Colours can be mixed to create a weathered effect.
Brindle mix is achieved by mixing Autumn Brown (50%), Dark Chestnut
(30%) and Dark Red 20%).
Composition
Sandtoft clay tiles are manufactured from naturally occurring alluvial
clay deposits which are processed, extruded or pressed and fired at
high temperatures.
building elements, products and components’ gives the normal
design life of buildings to be a minimum of 60 years. Sandtoft clay
tiles are guaranteed to remain durable for at least 60 years, subject
to the standard terms of the guarantee. All Sandtoft roof tiles are
included in the National Federation of Roofing Contractors’
Co-partnership Guarantee Scheme which offers a 10 year guarantee
Performance
Mechanical fixing
Plain tiles should have a minimum mechanical fixings in accordance
with the following:
At verges, abutments and either side of hips and valleys, the end tile
in each course should be twice nailed.
At eaves and top edges, each tile in two courses of tiles should be
twice nailed.
For rafter pitches below 60°, each tile in every fifth course should be
twice nailed.
For rafter pitches of 60° and above, each tile should be twice nailed.
In addition, a wind loading calculation should be carried out in
accordance with BS 5534 to determine any additional fixing which
may be necessary.
Detailed wind loading and mechanical fixing specifications are
available on request from the Sandtoft Technical Department.
Further information and guidance is available on request.
Roof ventilation
Roofs should be designed to avoid harmful condensation and be
properly ventilated to comply with BS 5250, ‘Code of Practice for the
control of condensation in buildings.’ Further information is given in
the ‘Roof ventilation’ brochure.
Detailed roofspace ventilation specifications are available on request
Health and Safety
Technical data on Sandtoft roof tiles to comply with the Health and
Safety Executive – Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
Regulations is available on request from the Technical Department.
Sitework
Sandtoft roof tiles should be laid and fixed to comply with BS 5534,
‘Code of Practice for Slating and Tiling’ and BS 8000: Part 6, ‘Code
of Practice for Workmanship on Building Sites – Slating and Tiling’.
Further information on mechanical fixing is given in the ‘Sandtoft
Wind Loading and Mechanical Fixing’ brochure.
Maintenance
Sandtoft clay roof tiles do not normally require any maintenance
avoid blockage of the tile rainwater channels.
