STATEMENT OF NEED<br />
This conference is designed for ophthalmologists, nurses and ophthalmic<br />
technicians. The conference is designed to teach the latest development in<br />
the field <strong>of</strong> ophthalmologic treatments and disorders and will include a wide<br />
range <strong>of</strong> topics relevant to clinical care.<br />
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES<br />
Following this conference, participants should be able to:<br />
• Discuss new medical and surgical treatments for vitreoretinopathies,<br />
inflammatory retinopathies, uveitis, corneal transplantation, scleritis, and<br />
age-related macular degeneration.<br />
• Discuss strategies for preventing and managing complications in patients<br />
with glaucoma, diabetes and eye trauma.<br />
• Describe the science behind disorders <strong>of</strong> the eye.<br />

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential<br />
Areas and Policies <strong>of</strong> the Accreditation Council for <strong>Continuing</strong> Medical Education<br />
(ACCME) through the joint sponsorship <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> and the<br />
Phillips <strong>Eye</strong> Institute. The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> is accredited by the ACCME to<br />

CANCELLATION POLICY<br />

GUEST FACULTY<br />
David J. Apple, MD is the Director <strong>of</strong> the<br />
David J. Apple Center for Ocular Biodevices.<br />
Dr. Apple is recognized around the world for<br />
his contributions to ocular pathology, and in<br />
particular, for his work on intraocular lenses.<br />
A noted international lecturer, Dr. Apple is<br />
the former chair <strong>of</strong> ophthalmology at the<br />
Medical <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> South Carolina’s Storm<br />
<strong>Eye</strong> Institute. In addition to his numerous<br />
honors, his textbook, Ocular Pathology,<br />
Clinical Applications and Self-Assessment,<br />
was first published over a quarter century<br />
ago and is now in its fifth edition. He is the<br />
author <strong>of</strong> more than 350 journal articles.<br />
Christopher J. Rapuano, MD is a nationally<br />
and internationally recognized expert in corneal<br />
diseases, with a special interest in refractive<br />
surgery. He has published several books,<br />
numerous book chapters and over 100 articles<br />
in the peer-reviewed literature on corneal diseases,<br />
refractive surgery and excimer laser PTK<br />
surgery. Dr. Rapuano co-authored a best-selling<br />
textbook in ophthalmology, The Wills <strong>Eye</strong><br />
Manual, which is currently in its fourth edition.<br />
Dr. Rapuano serves on many committees <strong>of</strong> the<br />
American Academy <strong>of</strong> Ophthalmology. He is on<br />
the editorial boards <strong>of</strong> several peer-reviewed<br />
ophthalmology journals.<br />
Howard H. Tessler, MD is the founder <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Uveitis Service at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Illinois <strong>Eye</strong><br />
& Ear Infirmary. He is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />
Ophthalmology at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Illinois<br />
at Chicago. He has authored or co-authored<br />
over 140 scientific publications. He has been a<br />
preceptor for 23 Uveitis post-residency fellows<br />
at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Illinois at Chicago.<br />
