FEMALE FRAGRANCE 08 STELLA STELLA MCCARTNEY TALKS ABOUT HER NEW FRAGRANCE, L.I.L.Y with Jane Dunford It’s a big year for Stella McCartney. Not only has she created the Adidas sportswear for the <strong>British</strong> Olympic and Paralympic teams for London 2012, she also held her first show for 16 years at London Fashion Week in February, has a new flagship store opening in South Kensington, and has just launched a brand-new fragrance — the simply named L.I.L.Y. Not bad for a 40-year-old mother of four children all under the age of six. But then, the second child of Sir Paul and Linda McCartney has always had a strong work ethic. Ever since she graduated from Central St Martins in 1995, she’s been determined to succeed through her own merits – often having to shake off accusations of her achievement being down to her family name. Appointed creative director of Parisian fashion house Chloé in 1997, she quickly proved her talent, taking the design house to new levels, before setting up her own eponymous label in 2001. She famously designed Madonna’s wedding dress for her nuptials to Guy Ritchie, has collaborated with artists from Jeff Koons to Gary Hume, launched Stella Kids in 2010, and has a shelf-full of coveted awards. Any designer worth their salt sooner or later dips his or her perfectly-shod feet into the heady world of scent and Stella’s first foray came with Stella, launched to wide acclaim in 2003. A delicious marriage of rose and grey amber, nearly a decade on it’s still going strong. Today, however, we’re here to talk about the latest string in her bow, her second fragrance, L.I.L.Y. Dressed slickly in her own designs and killer heels, she looks fresh-faced and relaxed, and talks enthusiastically about the new scent, which took three years to create with perfumer Jacques Cavallier. We meet in a room with walls that have been covered in moss — a nod to L.I.L.Y’s earthy undertones and the key role Mother Nature played in inspiring the perfume. As the name suggests, lily of the valley comprises the top notes, with depth given by black truffles from the Perigord region of France. Touchingly, Stella tells me, ‘Lily’ was also Sir Paul’s nickname for his late wife Linda — short for ‘Linda, I love you’. Growing up on an organic farm with siblings Mary, James and half-sister Heather, Stella enjoyed an outdoorsy childhood, riding horses and raising sheep, far from the mad whirl of celebrity life. Her love of nature shines through when she talks about L.I.L.Y. “I grew up in the English countryside and I remember lily of the valley growing in shady places,”she says. “I find it breathtakingly beautiful — it’s a very innocent-looking flower, with a real freshness and femininity, which I wanted to bring to the fragrance. “One of the challenges I faced was that it’s IT’S IMPORTANT TO ME TO CREATE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL, SOMETHING YOU DON’T JUST WANT TO THROW AWAY FEMALE FRAGRANCE thought of as an old-fashioned flower, no one really uses it any more,” Stella continues. “For me, it was important to break down these preconceptions.” With the feminine side of the perfume decided upon, Stella was determined to bring in a darker, balancing masculine note. Moss, which grows alongside lily of the valley, was introduced with other earthy elements, but the lightbulb moment came in a restaurant in Paris one autumn. “It was truffle season. I just thought that truffle is the best smell, the missing link in the perfume, the missing masculinity I’d been searching for. It’s sexy.” The fact that lily of the valley appears only briefly in spring, and truffles are found only in the autumn adds to the romance of the scent. “I love the idea of trying to capture a fleeting moment. I love that both lily of the valley and truffles come out at only one time during the year.” One sniff and it’s clear that this is indeed a scent that evokes the freshness of spring coupled with the earthiness of autumn. It’s light yet sultry, with other elements adding depth to the core mix — from the spice of black pepper, to the woody accents of patuchouli and the lightly musky sweetness of ambrette seeds. Of course, being a perfectionist, Stella was involved in the whole production process, from creating the scent alongside Jacques — “I brought the innocence, he has the expertise” — to designing the bottle and packaging, and finally shooting the very natural ad campaign, which was staged in the Kent countryside. The box is beautiful in its simplicity, while the bottle is a work of art in itself. Made from real cut glass and a metal frame, the bottle has a weight and timelessness that was carefully thought out by its designer. “It’s important to me to create something beautiful, something you don’t just want to throw away,” says Stella. “With a square metal frame and the contrasting oval inside, it’s bringing the masculine and the feminine together once again, too.” It seems, yet again, Stella has hit on a winning formula. “I’ve loved the whole process of creating this fragrance.
