This proved to be the necessary push that set their company on the road to further growth. with the state-owned Philippine Export Import Credit Agency enabled business to take its tentative step in the export market. In 2001, with the rise in demand, Moondish sought out Plantersbank to provide the custom-fit financing for the expansion of their canning operations. From the initial output of a few dozen cans a day, the company now offers variants of canned laing, along with products such as Bicol Express (an exotic mixture of chili, bits of meat and spices simmered in coconut cream), pinakbet, puso ng saging (banana blossom), and other tasty vegetable dishes. “We believe in taking calculated business risks and practicing handson management,” says Ana, who is responsible for the company’s day-to-day operations. “If you want to succeed in business, you can’t afford to stop learning and innovating.” Today, seven in 10 Moondish cans produced at the Taguig plant find their way onto shelves serving the Filipino diaspora in Canada, United States, Western Europe, Middle East, Guam and Japan. The Manriques say the challenge is to expand the market outside the Filipino diaspora. Meantime, the more adventurous European food-lovers are slowly developing a taste for the coconut cream-based vegetable dish.
