Biographies of Candidates for I.C.A. Officers PRESIDENT Marguerite Baker Levin is assistant professor of clarinet at Tow son University and principal clari net ist with the Baltimore Op era Orchestra. An active performer in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area, she plays with the Wolf Trap Opera Orchestra, Post- Classical Ensemble, Marguerite Baker Levin Alexandria Symphony, Annapolis Sym - phony, the National Gallery Orchestra and the Key West Symphony. She has substituted with the Kennedy Center Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra. She is a former member of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. Levin was the Artistic Director for Clar - inetFest® 2004 and has performed at Clar i - netFest® conferences in Lubbock, Salt Lake City, Col lege Park and Tokyo. She has also served on the I.C.A.’s judg ing panels for the Young Artist Com - pe tition, the High School Competition, and the Research Presentation Competition. At Towson University, Levin is Leader of the instrumental applied division and serves on the executive committee. She performs with the faculty woodwind quintet, Quintigre, and the Towson New Music Ensemble. Levin is a former faculty member of Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she taught clarinet and music theory for seven years. Levin received a B.M. in Music Edu - cation from North Texas State University, where she studied with James Gillespie, and an M.M. from the Catholic Uni ver sity of America as a student of Leon Rus sian off. She will complete her D.M.A. in May of 2006 from the University of Mary land where she has studied with Loren Kitt. Ad - ditional studies were with Stephen Girko, Robert Genovese and Edward Palanker. Gary Whitman is professor of clarinet and division chair of Wind and Percussion Studies at Texas Chris - tian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Active as a recitalist, he has performed at Clarinet - Fest® conferences in Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Mary - Gary Whitman land. His international performances in - clude Paris, France, Ostend, Belgium, and Stockholm, Sweden. He has served as guest lecturer in wind performance and ped agogy at the National Conser va - tory of Music in Mexico City, the Con - ser vatory of Music “Josafat Roel Pineda” in Lima, Peru, and the Stedelijk Con ser - vatory in Oostende, Belgium. His former students hold positions as professional performers and as music educators in the public schools, university positions, and private studios. As an orchestral performer, Whit man is the bass clarinetist of the Fort Worth Sym - phony. As a member of the FWSO since 1990, he performs during the classical and pops subscription series as well as ballet and opera productions. His chamber music affiliations include the Texas Clarinet Con - sort, and Trio Con Brio, a TCU faculty trio dedicated to performing and commissioning music for clarinet, viola and piano. On March 1, 2005, the trio performed the world premiere of Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano by Eric Ewazen in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. He continues to maintain a busy schedule as a versatile woodwind performer. He is heard regularly in venues varying from Broadway musi - cals to jazz in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and with the top commercial performers in the industry. From 1995 to 2003 he served as advertising manager for The Clarinet, the scholarly journal of the International Clarinet Association, and was exhibits coordinator for the I.C.A. ClarinetFest® conferences. He coordinated the exhibits for Clarinet - Fest® conferences at the University of Ok - lahoma, the Hilton Riverside Hotel in New Orleans, and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He has also served on the judging panels for both the I.C.A. Young Artist and Orchestral Audition Competitions. Whitman holds the BME and MME de - grees from the University of North Texas and was awarded the certificate de stage from the International Music Institute in Nice, France. His major teachers and mentors have been Lee Gibson, James Smith, Andrew Crisanti and Guy Deplus. He has recently been selected for inclusion in the eighth edition of Who’s Who Among Am - er ica’s Teachers, 2004. In 2004 TCU conferred upon him the Dean’s Award for Re - search or Creativity. Whitman is an art istclinician for Buffet Crampon USA, Inc. TREASURER Diane Barger is associate professor of clarinet at the Uni - versity of Nebraska School of Music and a member of the Moran Wood wind Quintet. She currently serves as principal clarinet with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra and is the Diane Barger Page 28 THE CLARINET
Treas urer of the International Clarinet Asso ci ation. Barger served as Coordinator of the I.C.A.’s High School Solo Com pe - tition (2003–2005) and is Chair of the Wind Area at the University of Nebraska– Lincoln. She received the Doctor of Music (1999) and Bachelor of Music (1988) de - grees from the Florida State University and the Graduate Certificate in Performance (1990) and Master of Music (1989) de - grees from Northwestern University. An active soloist and chamber musician, master class clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States, Barger has been a featured artist at numerous I.C.A. Clar i - netFest® and Oklahoma Clarinet Symposi - ums. A specialist in the genre of operatic fantasies for clarinet based on Vincenzo Bellini operas, Barger can be heard as a featured soloist on the I.C.A.’s 1998 Re - cord ing Project in a performance of Do - men ico Mirco’s “La Sonnambula” Fan ta - sia. With the Moran Woodwind Quintet, Barger participated in two lecture/performances at the October 2005 College Mu sic Society National Conference in Que bec City, Canada and the June 2005 CMS International Conference in Alcala de He n ares, Spain. SECRETARY Kristina Belisle is the associate professor of clarinet at the Uni - versity of Akron, principal clarinetist of the Akron Sym phony Or - ches tra and Blos som Festival Band, and clarinetist with the So laris Wind Quin tet. She currently serves as Kristina Belisle Secre tary of the Inter - na tional Clarinet Associ a tion. As a soloist, she has performed concertos with the Hous ton Sym phony, the Flint Symphony, the Cleve land Cham ber Symphony and with orchestras/wind ensembles through - out Ar kan sas and northeast Ohio. She has won numerous awards for her performan - ces including the 1993 William C. Byrd Na tional Young Artist Award for Winds and Brass and the 1992 Ima Hogg National Young Artist Award. As a chamber musician, she has performed with the Renaud Chamber Music Series, the Fon tana Fes - tival of Music and Art, the Nor folk, Bow - doin, and Garth Newel Chamber Music Festivals. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Mich igan State Uni ver - sity where she studied with Elsa Ludewig- Verdehr. Internation ally, Belisle has performed at the 2005, 2003 and 2000 In ter - national ClarinetFest® conferences, the 2002 Xi’an (China) In ternational Clarinet and Saxophone Fes tival and has given mas ter classes in China and Taiwan.
