Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
This edition of Today continues our focus on the remarkable “Culture of Giving” that has
been fostered by the dedication of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at St. Joseph’s over the
years. Their charism now infuses every aspect of the school community and has allowed
generations of young men to learn how to share their talents and gifts. So we celebrate our
Culture of Giving in this edition and especially wish to thank those who give so selflessly to
our community and our country.
Hundreds of our alumni serve in state and local police forces as well as fire and emergency
services. Hundreds more work as physicians, nurses, and therapists dedicated to helping
others. Many other graduates serve in local governments. Dozens have become priests,
brothers, and ministers. Hundreds of our alumni are now coaching their children in youth
sporting programs in communities throughout the country. All serve.
All help make their communities better places.
This issue focuses on the men who have given portions of their
lives to defend our country. In a very real way, the courage,
determination, and dedication to an ideal needed to join the military
and put oneself in harm’s way are some of the very qualities that Fr.
Andre Coindre looked for in the young men he recruited as the first
Brothers back in 1820.
When we as alumni look back and remember icons such as
Brothers George, Bernardine, Regis, Clifford and many others too
numerous to name, we remember their enthusiasm, their dignity and
their passion for the life they chose. In fact, a few lines from Fr. Andre
Coindre come to mind when I look back at the influence of the
Brothers on our lives. In a letter to Brother Borgia he wrote:
“Do not forget the young men whom you are training and who in
the world will forget neither the lessons you have taught them, nor your
own virtue, though right now they might not seem to be all that you would like them to be.
They are retaining more than you think.”
As students, we witnessed the way those Brothers put service ahead of their own wants.
We rarely thought about the courage required to live counter to the trends of modern society or
the discipline required to live one’s life according to a set of rules. We rarely thought about
their selfless dedication to God, their fellow Brothers and the countless other students they
served. Many times we forgot to say thanks. Now, as more mature adults, we can look back
and remember.
Over the years, hundreds of St. Joseph graduates have entered the military. Some have
created careers while others served for shorter periods of time in the air, at sea or on land.
Some served in Desert Storm while more recently others have served and been wounded in Iraq
and Afghanistan. For their commitment, their bravery and their sacrifice, we owe them a debt
of gratitude. Over the past two years, five of our graduates have gained admission to a Military
Academy. Their vision of the future is remarkable. To be so young and to have such clear
convictions in one’s country and its future is indeed a rarity. To all those who have served and
to the families who have supported their decisions - thank you.
Finally, I would be remiss not to thank the numerous alumni, faculty, parents and friends
of St. Joseph’s who have supported our Annual Fund and the various events sponsored by the
school and the President’s Office. Your generosity has been overwhelming and your
enthusiasm has been infectious. More alumni have returned for events at the school than ever
before. New faces have stepped forward to help fuel a renewed interest in our school and its
future. Undoubtedly, this is an exciting time at St. Joseph High School.
Sincerely,
Lawrence N. Walsh ’68
The Land of Enchantment
T“The Land of Enchantment.” Not
a bad welcome to my new home.
After driving practically across
the country, and knowing that
there was still six hours ahead of
me, the bright yellow welcome
sign brought an instant smile to
my face, and a simultaneous
fluttering in my stomach. I was
now becoming a part of
something much bigger than me.
Just under two weeks before
my entrance into New Mexico, I
had graduated from Loyola
College in Maryland. It was only
a month prior to graduation that I
had been accepted into and
decided to join Teach for America.
Teach for America is a national
non-profit organization that
places distinguished college
graduates into low-performing
urban and rural communities as
teachers. I had received my
placement: middle-school English
teacher, the Navajo Nation, New
Mexico.
After an intensive five week
summer training institute, I was
hired in the small town of Navajo,
NM. Navajo is a town of twothousand
people, with an
unemployment rate over fifty
percent. More than sixty percent
of the families are living below
the poverty line, which many
argue, including myself, is placed
too low given our current costs of
living.
Nothing would prepare me to
teach in a middle school
environment, especially our
middle school environment,
which consists of eighteen
portable trailers used as
classrooms, offices, and
restrooms. I welcomed forty
fresh faces into my class that
first day. I would soon become
aware that my students’ reading
scores ranged from pre-primer to
seventh grade reading levels, with
twenty-eight of my forty students
reading below a fourth grade
reading level in the sixth grade.
Yet, hope never faded. My
students would eventually be
reevaluated at the close of our
year and nearly all had shown
greater than two grade levels of
growth over the course of the
year, bringing many within two
years of being on grade level.
Personally, this experience has
challenged, tried, and
strengthened me. The spirituality
and traditions of the Navajo
people consistently amaze me and
strengthen my own faith, greatly
nurtured at St. Joe’s. It is only
through “the vision of faith that
promotes justice”, revealed to me
at St. Joe’s, that I find myself
here. My commitment to Teach
for America ends at the close of
this school year, but my
commitment to social justice is
only beginning to truly take
shape.
Brother Bernardine, S.C. Memorial Golf
Classic To Tee-Off on Monday, May 21
12th Annual Event To Directly
Benefit Students Through
Scholarships & Financial Aid
S
Saint Joseph High School will
celebrate the 12th Anniversary of
the Brother Bernardine, SC
Memorial Golf Classic on Monday,
May 21, 2007 at the Forsgate
Country Club, Monroe Township,
NJ. Ernie Feist, Class of 1976, is
serving as General Chairman.
Proceeds from this popular
event directly benefit the current
and future students at St. Joe’s by
providing scholarships and needbased
financial aid.
“With tuition increases, each
and every dollar generated through
the Golf Classic becomes critical in
accommodating the needs of our
students,” relates Feist, who also
serves as Development Committee
Chairman on the Board of
Governors. “Our goal for the 2007
Golf Event is to raise $125,000 in
net proceeds.”
The Golf Classic, named in
honor of Brother Bernardine
Leanman, SC, an avid golfer and
coach of the St. Joe’s Golf Team for
20 years, was initiated in 1996 at
the Metuchen Country Club to
support the budding Development
Program. Its growth and
popularity precipitated a move to
Forsgate Country Club for the 2000
event. Over its eleven year history,
St. Joe’s students have benefited
from the generosity of event
participants with $726,200 raised
to date, stamping the Brother
Bernardine, SC Memorial Golf
Classic a staple in helping to
ensure that an excellent, affordable
Catholic education is available to
young men in central New Jersey.
Competition for the Saint
Joseph High School Governor’s
Cup, now in its third year, will be
featured. Play is on the Banks
course, a championship layout at
Forsgate, and limited to 30
foursomes. The names of the
champions (gross winners) are
permanently inscribed on the Cup,
which is displayed prominently at
St. Joe’s throughout the year.
Competition among teams
representing the forty-two
graduating classes is encouraged.
The fee to participate in the
Governor’s Cup competition, played
as a four-man scramble with
handicaps and offering both gross
and net prizes, is $2,500 per
foursome. Defending champions
are the foursome of Mike Perrilla,
Cosmo Sanchino, Carl DeFazio and
Ernie Feist with a gross score of 16
under par.
The Palmer course at Forsgate
will continue to host the Golf
Classic competition. The format
will again be a four-man scramble
with handicaps, and net prizes will
be awarded. The Golf Classic
remains at $1,200 per foursome, or
$300 per player. First prize is a
round of golf at a prestigious golf
club in New Jersey. Bob Fulton,
Carl Nelson, Rich Uler and Bob
Flanagan, representing the Fathers
Club of St. Joe’s, won the 2006
competition at 20 under par.
There are a number of
Sponsorship Opportunities at
many levels associated with the
event, most of which include
playing privileges in addition to
other valuable benefits.
Participation in either
competition includes the full
complement of gifts, lunch,
practice balls, golf with cart,
cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a sitdown
dinner and prizes. In
addition, both a silent and live
auction will be conducted
featuring both playing privileges at
a variety of renowned New Jersey
golf venues and coveted sports
memorabilia. A raffle, offering a
trip to Las Vegas, a golfing
vacation in Maine, and a weekend
stay at a bed & breakfast in south
Jersey, is also available.
Again this year, the Event
Program Journal will be formatted
as a ready desk reference of
services available through St. Joe’s
alumni and friends, which will be
forwarded to alumni of St. Joe’s
residing in the central New Jersey
area as well as all current parents
– a unique opportunity to do
business with other St. Joe’s
graduates.
To date, five Grand Tournament
Sponsors have committed to the
event, including SJP Properties
(Steve Pozycki ’69), KP Johnson &
Associates (Kevin Johnson ’69),
Feist Engineering, Inc. (Ernie Feist
’76), Vince Maglio ’66, and
Renaissance Properties.
Alumni, parents and friends
competition and camaraderie
Annual Fund Campaign Reaches 66% of Goal
The 2006-2007 Annual Fund Campaign - Become A Part Of Saint Joseph High School
Tradition - celebrates 45 years of providing quality Catholic education by the Brothers of
the Sacred Heart in the central New Jersey area.
To date, the campaign has reached $148,000 from 720 donors
through the mail and phon-a-thon segment of the appeal toward a
goal of $225,000. The Brother Bernardine, SC Memorial Golf
Classic, with a target of $125,000 in net proceeds, advances the
overall Annual Fund campaign goal to $350,000 - funding that
makes a positive and immediate difference in the lives of all St.
Joe’s students.
Of the 720 donors, representing about 10% of the overall
database, 376 are alumni, 178 are current parents and 127 are
alumni parents and friends. The balance are corporate and
matching gifts. The campaign has also attracted 145 new donors. Building the response
to just 15% of the St. Joe’s family would ensure the success of the campaign.
For those who have not yet made an Annual Fund commitment, the spring appeal has
been mailed, providing an easy opportunity to demonstrate your support of the St. Joe’s
mission.
Our founder,
Father
Andre
Coindre
preached
and acted
upon the
spirit of
compassion
that Jesus
exemplified
through his
own life. By
responding
to abandoned
youth, Father
Coindre
gave of
himself, of his own heart. The
Brothers of the Sacred Heart are
called to respond just as Father
Coindre, just as Jesus did. This
spirit of compassion is what
motivates the brothers today.
Commitment,
Bravery, Sacrifice...
One of the great successes of
the Brothers of the Sacred Heart
has been their uncanny ability to
transfer their core values and
beliefs into every facet of the
academic and character-building
life of Saint Joseph’s High School.
This phenomenon is the main
ingredient in what we like to call
St. Joe’s Culture of Giving. It’s
usually acknowledged
when we talk proudly
about community
service, food drives,
disaster relief efforts,
philanthropic support
of the school and, in
street lingo, “covering
your buddy’s back.”
Nowhere, however, is
the concept of “giving
back” more visible and
profound than in St. Joe’s
remarkable record of
nurturing young men who
join the military to serve and
defend our great country.
Our enriched Alumni rolls
include 54 grads currently
serving on active duty or retired
from a military career and 12
currently attending military
academies. The tradition
continues in our senior class
where eight of our finest have
applied to military academies. At
production time, four had already
heard of their acceptances- to
West Point, the Coast Guard, and
Annapolis.
Can this be one big
coincidence? Not if you ask
recently-retired Lt. Col. Bob
Quinn ’78…..
Bob is a bigger-than-life hero.
A counter-intelligence officer and
terrorism expert for most of his
career, he served in the Middle
East with the most
elite
of the elite Special
Forces – Operation Detachment
Delta better known as the almost
mythical, top-secret Delta Force.
“St. Joe’s didn’t just prepare me
for giving back,” Quinn said, “but
for finding truth and justice in
ways you would not believe.”
The Brothers instilled a sense
of “family” in us that we carry
into all relationships in our lives.
All St. Joe’s grads, like military
veterans, walk taller and safer
because of what our brothers in
the military and civilian
life accomplished before
us. I particularly
remember the students who
were senior to me, who died
in the service of their country,
while I was still in school.
They will always remain a part
of me.”
Thankfully, our
great Brothers,
teachers, alumni and
parents can continue
to educate the next
generation of St. Joe’s
students, giving them
the same wisdom of
self sacrifice and
giving back I
received ‘In His
Name’.”
Now
retired,
Bob continues
to give back by
devoting his efforts to
the needs of active
military families
and vets – his
“greater
family.”
Neal Auricchio ’99 is a U.S.
Marine who didn’t think much
about the essence of St. Joe’s
Culture of Giving while a student,
but he learned quickly that being
an alumnus has special meaning.
“The most important impact on
my life was the sense of
‘brotherhood’ that evolved at
school and continues through
today. After graduation, the
United States Marine Corps
provided that same feeling.”
“As I prepared and trained
for deployment to Iraq, I
formed strong bonds with
my brothers-in-arms
and found that St. Joe’s
not only made me a
better man, it made
me appreciate
the pride
one gets in
giving
back.
Coincidentally, Neal’s
unit includes both a Gunnery
Sergeant and a Sergeant who are
fellow grads. “Goes to show,
wherever you go, you’ll always
find Joe’s,” he laughed.
Pat Donahoe ’85 like Bob
Quinn chose the U.S. Army as his
career and felt unusually
prepared and blessed for his
experience at St. Joe’s.
“From my first days at St.
Joe’s, I remember the emphasis
placed on service,” Pat said.
“Whether that was service to
God, the Church, or to
community, the focus was
always on what you had to
offer the greater good, not
‘what was in it for you.’ The
Brothers imbued in their
charges - in us - a sense that we
owed something to the outside, to
the country, to the world.
I think many of my
classmates chose a life of
service in missionary
work, or the Peace
Corps or in volunteerism.
I chose a life in the Service
and I have never been
disappointed. Just as the
Brothers told me, I would
encounter all walks of life
from our own country and I
would deal with the poor in
dispirit lands such as Korea,
Bosnia, Kuwait, and Iraq. I
would also meet with wouldbe
aristocrats in those lands as
well,” he continued.
Most importantly, the Brothers
of the Sacred Heart laid a broad
foundation for me to experience
this world and they prepared me
as well as this unwilling pupil
would allow them, and it has
served me well. I hope I have
served the nation a quarter as
well as St. Joe's served me.”
“From my first
days at St. Joe’s,
I remember the
emphasis placed
on service,”
As his fellow alumni and
brothers before him have served,
so a member of the next
generation prepares to make his
mark. 2nd Lt. Ryan Daly ’02,
fresh from the U.S. Military
Academy at West Point, has
several months remaining in
“St. Joe’s
inspired me
to give back
to my
country,”
the young
soldier said during a break
from training. “It helped me to understand
what truly matters and helped me to forge close bonds
with my teachers and peers. Now as an officer, I will
try to forge those same bonds with my soldiers.”
There is no question that
he has that sense of
kinship in him. It
is part of his
culture. He is a
St. Joe’s alumnus
and he is the
product of a
“Culture of
Giving.”
Regional
Gathering
On Saturday, January 27, 2007,
Vince '66 and Carol Maglio
hosted an informal gathering of
St. Joseph High School alumni
at their home in Hobe Sound.
The sunset view from their
back lawn was incredible as the
over 50 alumni and their guests
enjoyed the evening. The rivalry
between the classes of 1965 and
1966 continues with the 65ers
winning for highest attendees.
