To date, 76% of the Class of 2011 has received a college scholarship. The aggregate total ofthese awards is in excess of $21 million. Our Valedictorian, Michael Bender, will attend College of theHoly Cross and our Salutatorian, Mark Lee, will attend Brown University; 2 graduates will attend IvyLeague institutions; 33 graduates will attend Rutgers; 3 students will enroll in Service Academies (2 inWest Point and 1 in Annapolis); 5 will attend Notre Dame and 9 will attend Seton Hall University. Ourgraduates will attend schools from Boston University to Wagner College. Our academic teams performed very well! Our College Bowl Team, coached by Mr. Ed Powers, wonthe State Championship, the NJTV College Bowl Challenge and was invited to two nationalcompetitions. Our Mathematics Team once again proved itself to be the top team in the greater NewYork region by winning the Catholic Conference. Our Robotics Team won the Long Island Invitationaland finished 5th in a regional competition held at the Jacob Javitts Center inNew York City. Their performance earned them a trip to the nationals held inSt. Louis. The Falcon, our school newspaper, in national competition, wonFirst Place Honors from the American Scholastic Press Association for the 9thyear in a row! Our Vignette literary magazine, for the fourth year in a row,won First Place with special merit. Our yearbook, The Evergreen, also wonnational recognition.St. Joe’s athletic teams had another outstanding year! Our varsity teamswon 7 divisional titles and 5 county championships. Our Volleyball Teamwon the Central Jersey Sectional Championship. This past year saw theinaugural season for the newest addition to the list of activities at St. Joe’s -our Crew Team. They had a great year in spite of the fact that they sank twosculls! Our alumni resurgence continues at an amazing pace. Alumni in Chicago,Washington DC, New York, Florida and central New Jersey continue to meetat regional gatherings. Alumni supported our Open House in October, servingas guides, and also served on panels for our new student reception inDecember. The annual Advent Mass and Christmas Tree Lighting wasattended by over 400 people. In May, more than 20 alumni returned to speak to our current sophomoresand juniors at our annual Career Day.The Brother Bernardine, SC, Memorial Golf Classic was held at the Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club onMay 16th. Chaired by Mr. Joseph Syslo, a current parent, and led by an outstanding committee, theevent brought together 135 alumni, parents, and friends of St. Joseph’s and realized $80,000 in grossproceeds to help future generations of St. Joseph men. Thanks to our many friends and supporters, the school’s Annual Fund Campaign surpassed its goal of$225,000. Monies from the Annual Fund directly support scholarships, financial aid, technologyupgrades, curriculum enhancement and other needs not covered by tuition. The economy has forced the school to utilize more of its resources for financial aid to keep students inschool. More students have applied for assistance than ever before, telling us that because of difficultfinancial circumstances, they would be unable to receive a St. Joe’s education. In the spirit and Charismof the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, and with help from our supporters, we continue to seek ways toafford our students the opportunity to attend St. Joe’s. While we are elated about the success of ourevents, and indeed much was accomplished, much more remains to be done.As the year winds down, I would be remiss if I did not thank both the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Clubs ofSaint Joseph’s for their hard work and dedication, which directly impacts all of our students. This yearalone, the parents’ clubs have provided scholarships, laptop notebooks and projectors, library softwareand subscriptions and improvements to our physical plant. Their camaraderie and unselfishnessexemplify what we call the St. Joe’s Way.Over the years, courses, clubs and athletic teams have been added and others are changed. But,despite the changes, or maybe because of the changes, Saint Joseph’s is still the premier educationalinstitution for boys. We still make excellence, be it in academics or extracurricular activities, a habit. Welet others make it a goal. We remain a Brothers of the Sacred Heart school, where we teach young mento be resilient in spirit and unafraid to pray.Thank you for your support of St. Joseph High School. No matter the form of that support, know thatit is appreciated and needed. Have a great summer!Sincerely,2Lawrence N. Walsh ’68President

Rock Band of Brothers:Jeremiah ‘05 andDan ‘10 Sullivanby Charles Bruno ‘12St. Joe’s alumni may regardthemselves as united infraternity to all those past andpresent who have passedthrough the school halls. Forbrothers Jerry ‘05 and Dan ‘10Sullivan, St. Joe’s provided afoundation of skills that theyhave used to foster theirrespective interests and grabstatewide headlines, whileenjoying the opportunity to worktogether as brothers andbusiness associates. The Brothers Sullivan: Dan and JerryDan Sullivan and hisprogressive hard rock band,Audio Insight, have taken thestate by storm over the last year. After releasing their debutalbum Dimensions (which isavailable on iTunes), the bandhas “been on a roller coaster ofsuccess,” according to Dan.The three-piece band, whichfeatures Dan on the drums, united in late 2009, when Danmet up with Woodbridgecomrade Mike Deverin. Deverin, the bass player, established theconnection with his WoodbridgeHigh School classmate, AnthonyCeli, the vocalist and guitarplayer; and after a few “jamsessions,” the three recognized amusical chemistry. They cite theDeftones, Tool and Pink Floydamong theirinfluences. The trio hadgrown a small,college-radiofan basefollowing their November2010 release of Dimensions, butfound a fortuitous opportunitythis past spring. Competingagainst more than 400 bandsand musicians, Audio Insightemerged victorious in TheBREAK Contest. The band’s foursongset at the historic AsburyPark Stone Pony earned the bandthe opportunity to perform atNew Jersey’s most prestigiousmusical festival - TheBamboozle, held April 29-May 1at the New Meadowlands SportsComplex in East Rutherford.Through all the success, Danappreciates his musical journey, which he believes has merelyjust begun. From jamming inWoodburn Hall, to performing atthe second annual StudentCouncil Rock Concert, andfinally culminating with theperformance at Bamboozle, Danrecognizes the role others play inthe band’s success. One suchcontributor is older brother,Jerry. “The work my brother andhis team [at Framework MediaStrategies] have done with ourmarketing and press has broughtus to new levels and has trulybrought us to where we aretoday.”While Jerry does not share themusical ambition of his youngerbrother, he has parlayed hispassion for writing andcommunication into a publicrelations degree and a mediastrategies company. Heestablished Framework MediaStrategies in January 2010, asmall operation which offersAudio Insight: (L to R): Mike Deverin, Anthony Celiand Dan SullivanPhoto Credit: Stephanie Takavchinpublic andmedia relations services to adiverse set of clients in andaround New Jersey. Jerry admitsthat Framework is not an agency, but rather the group “assistsclients with their communicationinitiatives…by blendingtraditional tactics like print andbroadcast coverage with newmedia tools such as socialnetworking and microblogging.”Jerry developed his writingability as a member of both TheFalcon and the Vignette staffsduring his time at St. Joe’s. Upongraduation, he took his talents toSeton Hall University, where hecontinued to write for thestudent newspaper, TheSetonian, in addition to taking awork-study position with theUniversity’s Public Relations andMarketing Department. As Dan continues his studiesat Ramapo College and Jerryfinishes his graduate degree atSeton Hall, the two both credittheir alma mater for the successthey have had outside theclassroom.“St. Joe’s has built me into astronger individual…someonewho always strives for success,”Dan commented. Dan returned tothe school, along with the rest ofAudio Insight, on May 20th toshare their tale of success withcurrent students.
