Photo courtesy of the Reinhard family. ©2012 Saint Joseph High School All Rights Reserved Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, In June, 1962, Elvis was king; the Beatles were still splitting time between Germany and Liverpool; Camelot reigned in Washington DC; and the first year of classes at St. Joseph High School had just finished. It was an exciting time on the National front; while locally there was a great deal of optimism for the fledgling school. Fifty summers have now passed since the opening of St. Joseph High School. In school years, twelve generations of students have passed through the halls of the school. Together, we have formed a past and shaped a future. On behalf of the entire St. Joseph community, thank you for your support. This issue is a celebration of an alumnus (Kevin Reinhard), who was not even born when the school began and of a lifelong supporter of St. Joseph High School, Brother Robert Sheeley, S.C. (aka Brother Lunch in his early years and later, Brother Bus), who was very much a part of the entire history of St. Joseph’s. Earlier in the year, Marine Corporal Kevin Reinhard ‘05 died far from home in Afghanistan, bravely serving our country. His death touched thousands within, and outside of, our community. In March, St. Joseph’s lost a friend, supporter and mentor when Br. Robert Sheeley, S.C. died. His love of God, humor, and willingness to pitch in and help out were lifelong lessons to generations of Alumni. Traditionally, early summer is a time of transitions. Seniors, whether high school or college, look forward to the next stage in their lives. Eighth graders look forward to their first day of high school with a mix of eagerness and trepidation. May, June, and July are some of the more sought after months for weddings. By their nature transitions are emotional events. They tend to either make us happy or sad - sometimes both. The past few months have also seen many transitions at St. Joseph High School. We say good bye to our seniors with pride in their numerous accomplishments but are saddened by their departure. This year’s class set new standards for excellence. They amassed over $24.5 million in scholarships as well as the highest percentage ever for scholarships (84%). They won athletic and academic state championships. They achieved incredible success inside and outside the classroom. Our College Bowl Team won the MSG Varsity New Jersey Challenge Championship. Our Math Team again excelled in not only Middlesex County but also in the very competitive Catholic Math League. Our seniors, and indeed our entire community, can boast a World Champion, Alex Frey ‘12, who defeated a young lady from Spain in Grasse, France at the World Championship History Bee. Alex won the opportunity to attend the World Championships by winning the National Championship in Washington for the second year in a row! Athletically, we won our first ever Varsity Football game. We won 5 divisional titles.We also won 5 county titles: Swimming (33rd in a row), Hockey, Basketball (3rd in a row), Golf (3rd in a row), and Lacrosse (5th in a row). Finally, we won our 1st ever Parochial A State Basketball Title in the fifty years of our existence. We also experienced transitions in the past few weeks focused on new journeys for our teachers and parents’ organizations. Deacon Rich McCarron retired after nine years as our Pastoral Dean. He will be succeeded by newly ordained, Deacon Robert Yunker. Mrs. Kerry (Capone) Cutillo will also retire to spend time with her infant son. We will also welcome Br. William Cawley, S.C., who taught English here in the 1970’s. Br. Bill will work in Campus Ministry. Mrs. Lisa Dacey’s and Mrs. Donna Rafano’s terms of office as Mothers’ Club co-presidents expired, and they will be succeeded by Mrs. Irene Laki and Mrs. Diane Miller. Mr. Vincent Sollecito stepped down as President of the Fathers’ Club, and will be succeeded by Mr. Chris Kozub ’80. I thank Mrs. Dacey, Mrs. Rafano and Mr. Sollecito for their commitment and dedication to St. Joseph’s. The camaraderie and unselfishness of our parents’ clubs exemplify what we call the St. Joe’s Way. Thanks to our many friends and supporters, the school’s Annual Fund Campaign surpassed its goal of $225,000, raising over $300,000! Monies from the Annual Fund directly support scholarships, financial aid, technology upgrades, curriculum enhancement, and other needs not covered by tuition. Each year, we welcome the freshman parents of the next academic year. I tell them that St. Joseph’s is a dynamic, ever changing community, dedicated to helping their sons grow. Familiar faces retire; new teachers arrive. Old friends pass away. New courses are added as others are changed. But despite the changes, or maybe because of the changes, Saint Joseph’s is still the premier educational institution for boys. We still make excellence, in academics and extracurricular activities, a habit. We let others make it a goal. We remain a Brothers of the Sacred Heart School, where we teach young men to be resilient in spirit and unafraid to pray. Thank you for your support of St. Joseph High School. The 2011-12 Annual Fund Exceeds Goal... Thank You! The 2011-2012 St. Joseph High School Annual Fund makes a difference in the lives of ALL St. Joe’s students! Each year, the Annual Fund provides essential revenue that has immediate and lasting impact as the contributions support all facets of the St. Joe’s community: financial aid, underwriting of campus ministry service projects, academic curriculum enhancements, and athletic program support. Each donation links the donor to our students, who benefit from the quality Catholic education offered by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in the central New Jersey area. This year, the campaign has raised over $335,000 in gifts, pledges and matching gifts from over 853 donors through the mail and phon-a-thon segments of the appeal, exceeding our goal of $235,000. Scholarships and financial aid are also supported through the Annual Fund. A record number of applicants applied for financial assistance this year. As a steady and much appreciated donor, or an alumnus just beginning a tradition of giving, we thank you and hope that you will continue to take a leadership role in our Annual Fund campaigns. We are so thankful for the generosity of those who have given to this year’s campaign. We celebrate you! We are pleased that over the past few years our average gift has increased to $284.00. Your support is needed and appreciated. Due to inclement weather, the 17th Annual Brother Bernardine, S.C. Golf Classic was moved to Thursday, July 19, 2012. Proceeds from this popular and growing event continue to benefit students at St. Joe’s by providing scholarships and need-based financial aid along with program, technological and extracurricular enhancements. In honor of our 50th Anniversary, our net revenue goal for this year’s event is $50,000. Because of the postponement, at press time, the actual, total proceeds from this event are unavailable.
