GREAT LAKES VALLEY CONFERENCE
Missouri University of Science and Technology is a member of the Great Lakes Valley
Conference, joining the league in the 2005-06 academic year as part of a league
expansion that brought three institutions into the league. The GLVC, which is
constituted of 15 institutions for the 2010-11 season, made its name as a power in
NCAA Division II basketball but has enjoyed success in many sports and now the league
can claim itself as one of the nation’s top Division II leagues.
Established: 1978
The GLVC will soon become the largest conference in NCAA Division II, as William Jewell
College will become the league’s 16th member in 2011-12 and McKendree University
will give the conference 17 full-time institutions in the 2013-14 school year. The conference
will also add two associate members -- Central State University and Urbana University
from the state of Ohio -- to compete in football when the GLVC begins sponsoring
championships in that sport in 2012.
The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors
of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University
at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions
about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis
and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along
with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC.
Since formulation of the conference, seven schools have joined the league: Lewis
University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University
(1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois
University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994) and UM-St. Louis
(1995). Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season. IPFW left
the GLVC following the 2000-01 academic year and SIU Edwardsville left the conference
after the 2007-08 season.
The addition of Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Quincy, Wisconsin-Parkside and Missouri-
St. Louis in the mid-1990s allowed the GLVC to become an immediate national power in
several sports such as men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball and tennis.
At the start of the 2005-06 season, Missouri S&T, Drury University and Rockhurst
University – all of whom have had a good deal of success at the regional and national
levels in various sports – have enhanced the league’s reputation at the NCAA Division II
level. The conference expanded again prior to the 2009-10 season when the University
of Illinois-Springfield and Maryville University become members of the GLVC and will
become a 16-team conference in the fall of 2011 when William Jewell joins the league.
The league’s staff has also increased along the way, with the GLVC hiring its first fulltime
commissioner in 1996. In 2001, an associate commissioner was also added to the
full-time conference staff and the GLVC’s first full-time sports information director was
added in the summer of 2006.
The conference expanded to include women’s basketball in 1983-84 and immediately
established a women’s-men’s doubleheader format in league play to ensure maximum
exposure for both squads. The GLVC plays its games primarily on Thursdays and
Saturdays in November, December, January and February.
The GLVC can claim schools in all of the Midwest major media markets, with schools in
Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (Wisconsin-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis
(Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville
(Southern Indiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst/William
Jewell), Springfield, Mo. (Drury) and St. Louis (Missouri-St. Louis/Maryville/McKendree).
The conference sponsors 17 championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf,
soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men and basketball, cross
country, softball, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, and volleyball
for women. Football will be added to the GLVC slate beginning in the fall of 2012.
In 2001, the league announced the creation of the GLVC Hall of Fame, with the first class
being inducted in 2002.
Jim Naumovich, a former sports information director and director of athletics at Quincy
University, is in his seventh year as the commissioner of the GLVC. Wispeny Ellis serves
as the league’s assistant commissioner, while Tom Daeger handles the conference’s
sports information duties as the conference’s associate commissioner. The league
offices are located in Indianapolis.
ABOUT MISSOURI S&T
Campus overview
Missouri S&T is one of the top technological research universities in the nation. Surrounded by Ozarks scenery
(Rolla is about 100 miles west of St. Louis), the campus is accessible, safe and friendly. Known for its engineering
programs, S&T also offers degrees in the sciences, liberal arts, humanities and business. About 6,800 students are
currently enrolled in classes, making S&T big enough to accommodate a diverse population but small enough for
individuals to stand out.
MINER BASEBALL
4
S&T students are expected to actively participate in the processes of getting an education, whether that means
joining a student design team, participating in intercollegiate athletics, conducting research with faculty members,
helping to assure safe drinking water in a Central American community, or planning activities for the campus’s next
St. Pat’s celebration. Upon graduation, these experienced students are in extremely high demand by companies
across the nation and around the world.
Without exceptional faculty members and involved alumni, it wouldn’t be possible to give these students a
world-class education. The campus currently employs astronauts, bridge builders, chemists, filmmakers, historians,
pyrotechnicians, rocket scientists, solar energy experts and video bloggers. S&T graduates, many of whom give time
and money back to the university, work on the International Space Station, play professional poker, run NASCAR
teams, search for cancer cures, win Academy Awards and lead Fortune 500 companies.
S&T is a campus in motion. With more than 200 student organizations on campus, there’s a place for everyone
to get involved. Students can be seen pedaling human-powered vehicles in the shadow of Toomey Hall, the new
mechanical and aerospace engineering complex, or building solar-powered cars and houses. Mining engineers are
growing oil-producing algae underground while materials scientists are learning how to mend broken bones with
glass in their laboratories.
Founded in 1870, the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy was the first technological
institution west of the Mississippi River. One of four campuses in the University of Missouri System, the name was
changed to the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1964 and changed to its current name of Missouri University of
Science and Technology in 2008.
ATHLETICS AT MISSOURI S&T
About athletics
Missouri S&T boasts a competitive athletic program as a
member of NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference
in all sports except football (playing currently as an NCAA Division
II independent; the GLVC will add football as a conference sport in
2012) and swimming (aligned with the New South Intercollegiate
Swimming Conference). With the addition of volleyball in 2007, S&T
fields eight men’s and seven women’s varsity teams.
Missouri S&T student-athletes have shown success at the national
level both on the field and in the classroom.
On the field
S&T teams have finished in the top 10 at the national level for
13 of the past 14 seasons. S&T has won four NCAA national titles on an
individual basis in swimming during the past 10 seasons, with Zlatan
Hamzic capturing the title in the 200-yard breaststroke at the 2009
NCAA Division II Championships. S&T’s 200-yard freestyle relay team
won back-to-back Division II championships in 2001 and 2002, while
the 400-yard freestyle relay team took home a national title in 2002.
The Miner swimming team has finished among the top four in the nation
in three of the past four years, headed by a runner-up finish at the
2008 national meet.
Missouri S&T’s men’s track and field team swept the GLVC titles in
2009 and combined with the women’s team to send eight individuals
to national competition -- and all of them finished among the top eight
to earn All-America honors.
S&T’s football team matched its best record over the last 23 seasons
in 2008, while the last year saw S&T’s men’s soccer, men’s and women’s
basketball and softball teams all qualify for GLVC post-season play. The
Lady Miner basketball and softball teams have made NCAA regional
competition in recent years, with the basketball team making it to the
championship game of the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in 2008.
ACADEMICS AND ALL-AMERICA SELECTIONS
S&T is proud of its academic reputation as one of the top
institutions for science and technology. The results are
shown in the consistently strong performance of the
student-athletes on the S&T campus.
During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 219
student-athletes at S&T finished with a 3.0 or better GPA.
The university also has a high number of selections to the
academic teams in the past year that were released by the
Great Lakes Valley Conference, Great Lakes Football Conference
and New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference.
A total of 107 S&T student-athletes were selected to the
GLVC’s All-Academic team for the 2009-10 school year, the
sixth-best total in the 15-team conference.
S&T student-athletes have won 54 Academic All-America
awards, as selected by CoSIDA and its program sponsors,
and 168 Academic All-District awards during the past 18
years. In addition, numerous teams and individuals have
been honored for their success as student-athletes by their
various national organizations.
In the past year, two S&T student-athletes earned ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-America honors. A total of 10
individuals were named to their selected Academic All-
District teams during the 2009-10 season. S&T has had 23
Academic All-America selections over the past six seasons
for a total of 33 since 2000, the fourth-best total in NCAA
Division II.
HEAD COACH : TODD DEGRAFFENREID
Todd DeGraffenreid enters his eighth season as the
head coach of the Miners and will look to get Missouri S&T
into the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in the
2011 campaign.
The Miners have been in contention for a playoff spot in
each of the last three seasons on the final weekend of the
year. Last year, the Miners were 14-18 in the GLVC West and
had a chance to make the playoffs on the final day of the
season, as was the case in 2009. In that season, S&T was
11-13 in conference play and was eliminated on the last
day of action.
Missouri S&T finished the 2008 season with a record of
22-26 and were in contention for a playoff spot all the way
to the final weekend of the season. S&T posted a 15-17
mark in league play last year, its best mark since joining the
GLVC in 2006.
During the 2010 season, the Miners had an all-region
performer in designated hitter Will Morrison, who led the
Miners in hitting with a .391 average and earned first-team
all-region laurels.
In 2007, the Miners ended the year with a mark of 20-27
and had a significant say in the Great Lakes Valley Conference
playoff race down the stretch. The Miners knocked off
three teams -- Quincy, Rockhurst and Northern Kentucky --
who were still in contention for playoff berths and nobody
among that trio qualified for the event. In addition, Missouri
S&T won the season series over eventual tournament
champion Drury.
The Miners had a record of 11-41 record during their
first season in the GLVC, but despite the record, proved that
they could play with the top teams in the conference. Missouri
S&T swept a doubleheader from a Quincy team that
made it to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, played GLVC
champion Northern Kentucky
to three one-run games and
won two of three contests from
an Indianapolis team that also
made the conference tournament
field.
Missouri S&T also had the
league’s top freshman as voted
by league coaches in Thomas
McCormick, an outfielder who
led the Miners in hitting during
the 2006 campaign.
Missouri S&T finished 11-43 in 2004 after going 16-33 in
DeGraffenreid’s first year at the helm. The Miners also finished
with an 11-20 conference record in 2004, but Missouri
S&T was one of only two teams in the nation to post two
victories over a Central Missouri State team that placed third
in the NCAA Division II World Series. The other team to pull
the feat was eventual national champion Delta State.
Missouri S&T also posted a win over Emporia State during
that season; the Hornets later participated in the NCAA
Central Regional tournament.
DeGraffenreid became the Missouri S&T head coach after
serving as an assistant coach at William Woods University for
three seasons while also playing professional baseball. He
started his minor league careeer in the 1999 season when
he played on a championship team in London (Ont.) in the
Frontier League. During that season, DeGraffenreid led all
rookie third basemen in hitting, hits, home runs and stolen
bases.
He later played for Richmond and for the Gateway Grizzlies
in that league before playing in 2002 for San Angelo
and Fort Worth.
DeGraffenreid attended Lincoln University, where he was
a standout third baseman at a time when the Blue Tigers
were emerging as a top team in the Mid-America Intercollegiate
Athletics Association. He later served as an assistant
coach at LU during which Lincoln posted a second place
finish in the MIAA Tournament in 1999.
DeGraffenreid, who completed work on a bachelor’s
degree in kinesiology in 2000, is originally from Searcy, Ark.
Dr. John F. Carney III, Missouri S&T Chancellor
Dr. John F. Carney III, former provost and vice president for academic affairs at
Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass., began his tenure as chancellor at
Missouri S&T on Sept. 1, 2005.
A 40-year veteran of higher education, Carney served as WPI’s provost and vice
president for academic affairs from 1996 through 2004. In that capacity, he hired more
than half of the current tenured and tenure-track faculty. He was involved with the
creation of the Center for Educational Development, Technology and Assessment, led
the renovation of several WPI laboratories, bolstered the campus’s Interdisciplinary
and Global Studies Division, and made WPI, one of the nation’s oldest technological
universities, a more welcoming place for female faculty members.
A civil engineer by training, Carney earned a bachelor’s degree from Merrimack
College in North Andover, Mass., in 1963. He also earned master’s and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from
Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in 1964 and 1966, respectively.
Carney began his academic career at the University of Connecticut, serving on the civil engineering faculty
from 1966-1981. He then joined Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., as professor and head of the civil engineering
department, a position he held until 1983, when he joined Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., as a professor
of civil engineering. At Vanderbilt, he served as associate dean for graduate affairs (1989) and then associate dean
for research and graduate affairs (1993). He joined the faculty and administration at WPI in 1996.
The field of impact mechanics has been Carney’s major research interest for more than 30 years. During this
period, he was awarded a series of grants and contracts with the National Science Foundation, the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization, the Federal Highway Administration, British Rail, the Advanced Railway Research Centre, and
the Departments of Transportation in the states of Connecticut, Washington, Alabama, Georgia, Colorado, and
Tennessee. This research activity resulted in the development and implementation of a whole series of impact
attenuation devices employed in motorway safety applications in the United States and overseas. Carney holds
nine patents in this area. In addition, his work with the railroad research community in Great Britain has led to new
concepts for improving the crashworthiness of trains.
Carney is the author of more than 140 technical publications in the area of structural mechanics and has been
active on numerous National Research Council committees. He is also a fellow of the American Society of
Engineers.
MISSOURI S&T ADMINISTRATION
Mark Mullin, Director of Athletics
Mark Mullin is in his 18th year as Missouri S&T’s director of athletics where
he oversees a program that has consistently finished in the top one-third of the
NACDA Director’s Cup Standings. He also oversees a program that has enjoyed
great success academically, as evidenced by the 33 ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-America awards won by S&T student-athletes since 2000, the fourthhighest
total among NCAA Division II institutions.
During the 2009-10 school year, Missouri S&T enjoyed a great deal of athletic
success headlined by eighteen student-athletes earning All-America honors and
45 all-conference selections from the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The success
also carried over to the academic side, where S&T had 150 student-athletes post a
grade point average of at least 3.5 to earn the S&T scholar-athlete awards.
Academic all-conference awards were achieved by 130 Miner student-athletes last
season.
Under Mullin’s direction, S&T has served as the host institution for the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving
Championships as well as the NCAA South Central men’s regional basketball tournament, MIAA men’s basketball
finals, the GLVC women’s basketball tournament, the MIAA cross country championships and GLVC cross country
and track & field championships. He led the process that allowed S&T to move its conference affiliation to the
Great Lakes Valley Conference beginning in the fall of 2005.
In the last year, he has led a number of significant facility projects. These projects included the completion and
opening of a new state-of-the-art fitness center and varsity weight and fitness rooms; a new indoor practice facility
and new sports medicine center.
A number of facility upgrades have also occurred during Mullin’s tenure. These improvements include: the Student
Recreation Center being constructed; renovating Allgood-Bailey stadium to include a new track, lights, and a
new concession restroom facility; the addition of chair back seats to the Bullman arena, and the building of a new
soccer complex.
In addition to his duties as athletics director, Mullin served as swimming and diving coach for 12 years and led
the Miners to a 96-27 dual meet record and seven regional championships. His final team finished third at the
1998 NCAA Division II Championships, the highest finish ever for a Miner athletic team at an NCAA championship
event at the time.
Mullin has served two terms as the chair of the NCAA Division II men’s and women’s swimming and diving
committee and has also served multiple terms on the men’s basketball and football regional advisory committees
for the region. He served a two-year term as the president of the MIAA after spending the two prior years as the
conference’s vice president prior to S&T’s switch to the GLVC. He was recently elected to serve as the conference
director of athletics representative on the GLVC Executive Committee.
Mullin and his wife Joanie have four daughters, Elizabeth, Katie, Melissa, and Nina, two granddaughters, Halle
and Preslie and a grandson, Jackson.
Dr. Jeff Cawlfield, NCAA Faculty Representative
Dr. Jeff Cawlfield, professor of geological engineering at Missouri S&T, is in his
eighth year as the university’s faculty representative to the NCAA. He took over the
duties in January 2003 following the retirement of Dr. Jack Ridley, who had served
in the role for the previous three years.
After joining the S&T faculty in 1987, Cawlfield was named professor of
geological engineering in 1999 and became head of the geological engineering
department the following year. He moved into the role of associate dean in 2001.
Cawlfield received an S&T Sustained Excellence in Teaching award in 2003.
Cawlfield received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Washington
State University in 1981 and his master’s and doctorate degrees at the University
of California-Berkeley.
Cawlfield is also an Honorary Knight of St. Patrick, an honor he received in 2002 along with a group that
included Dr. Manuel Pacheco prior to his retirement as president of the UM System. He was selected by Pacheco to
attend the first UM Administrative Leadership Development Program during the 2000-01 academic year.
2011 SEASON PREVIEW
For the past three seasons, Missouri S&T’s baseball
team has been knocking on the door as far as making
the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, but was
knocked out on the final weekend on each of those
occasions. With a revamped squad in place for the 2011
season, the hope around the squad is that this is the
year the Miners break through to continue the season
well into May.
Head coach Todd DeGraffenreid is hopeful that a
group of key veterans and impact newcomers can be
the correct mix to get the Miners into the playoffs this
season. With Illinois-Springfield joining the conference
in baseball, the GLVC has adjusted its conference alignment
as it now has defending NCAA Division II national
champion Southern Indiana in the GLVC East.
The Miners – who will open their league slate with a
doubleheader against the Screaming Eagles on March
19 – figure to be competing with division favorite
Drury, Rockhurst, Quincy and improving teams at
Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville for the available playoff
spots from the GLVC West.
The Miners had a great start to their conference season
a year ago, winning eight of their first nine GLVC contests.
However, a slump in April sent S&T back to the
middle of the pack in the GLVC West standings and it
was unable to overtake Rockhurst on the final weekend
to see its playoff hopes come up short.
Zach Carter earned third-team All-GLVC honors
in 2010 after leading S&T in several categories.
The Miners, 19-33 overall and 14-18 in the GLVC a year ago, return their top two hitters from that squad in designated
hitter Will Morrison and third baseman Zach Carter. Morrison earned first-team All-GLVC and all-region
honors as a sophomore after hitting .391 with six home runs and 33 runs batted in, but is expected to miss the
early part of the season as he is recovering from an injury.
Carter batted .369 and drove in a team-high 41 runs – and homered six times as well – from his third base position
and is expected to stabilize the middle of the lineup this spring as he was one of three Miners to post a slugging
percentage of over .560 in 2010.
Missouri S&T also returns two additional top offensive players from a year ago in centerfielder Ben Pieper and
rightfielder Sam Adams. Pieper broke the Miners’ single season home run record last spring by belting nine before
an injury sidelined him for the final two weeks, but he batted .326 with 37 RBI. Adams, meanwhile, hit .338 in
his freshman season in a Miner uniform and figures to be the leading candidate to fill the designated hitter role
while Morrison is recovering from his injury.
Adams could also see time in the outfield along with Pieper and a host of newcomers who are expected to
contend for roles. Lee Voth-Gaeddert, a transfer from Hesston College who hit .466 at the junior college level last
season, is in contention to start in left field and will be challenged by former Rolla High School product Andy
Hall, who comes to S&T after a two-year stint at Three Rivers Community College.
Another newcomer to the mix, Will McCord, will also contend for a starting role and could open the season in
right field. McCord was an all-conferenceperformer at Willison State College in North Dakota, a school that also
produced former Miner outfielder Gerad Fox.
11MINER BASEBALL
2011 SEASON PREVIEW
Carter is expected to anchor the third base position
and returner Grant Brasher is the projected starter at
first base, but the middle infield will consist of players
new to the Miner roster this spring. Nick Burke, a
transfer from John Wood Community College, figures
to see playing time at both shortstop and third base,
while freshman Clint Wobbe will play either at second
base or shortstop. Freshman Eric Van Dyke will also be
in competition for a starting role at the middle infield
positions.
Drew Davenport, who has started for a better part of
the last two seasons behind the plate, returns to that
role and will share the catching duties with newcomer
Josh Caffrey, a transfer from Marshalltown Community
College in Iowa.
They will catch a staff that, similar to that of the
position players, is a fairly even mix of veterans and
newcomers.
The Miners return five starting pitchers with
experience, headed by junior Zack Gronek who spent
the entire 2010 season coming out of the bullpen –
making a school record 27 appearances during the
season. Gronek went 2-2 with a 4.61 earned run average
in that role after spending most of his freshman
season as a starter, but is expected to move back into
the starting role for the most part this spring.
Sophomore pitcher Chris Bowe is one of many
pitchers competing for starting roles in 2011.
MINER BASEBALL
Among the other returners to the starting rotation are
senior Nick Johnson, sophomores Chris Bowe (2-2 as a
freshman) and Kyle Robertson and junior Drew Pyles,
who is expected to come out of the bullpen this season.
Alex Dunn, who has been a reliever throughout his first
three seasons at S&T, is expected to join the starting
rotation this year along with newcomers John Auble,
who recorded a 13-2 record in his final two seasons at
Lutheran South High School and Drew Schrader, who
was a top pitcher last season at Troy Buchanan High
School.
In the bullpen, the Miners are expecting to get contributions
from Pyles and returners Nolan Korn, Matt Walker,
Harry Dunsford and Mike Bush.
12
Will Morrison led Missouri S&T in hitting in 2010
and broke the school record with 75 hits.
