COLEY CANDAELE Outstanding Athlete 4 With a passion for football and track, Coley Candaele excelled in both and was named the CIF Athlete of the Year in 1990. As a player and coach, Coley Candaele led the Carpinteria High School football team to four CIF Championships. During 1987-1989 Coley quarterbacked for three Championship Teams. In 1989 Coley was named CIF Player of the Year and was part of the All-CIF team in both 1988 and 1989. In 2002, during his last season as head coach of Carpinteria High School, the team went 14-0 capturing his 4th CIF Championship. Coley Candaele's match-ups during the 1990 track season with rival, Arroyo Grande's Louie Quintana, were legendary, with Coley ending up the national prep leader that year with a 4:06 1600M. Candaele was the Santa Barbara County Champion in both the 800M and 1600M in 1998 and 1989. After accumulating six Individual CIF Championship Titles (800/1600), one Relay CIF Championship Title (4x400) and a State Championship Title in the 1600M in 1990, Coley earned a full track and field! cross-country Scholarship to the University of Oregon. After two years at Oregon, Candaele finished his collegiate career at Cal-Poly San Louis Obispo running track and cross-country. Coley is currently the Head Football and track & field Coach Vista Murrieta High School. Selected as Riverside County Coach of the Year in 2005 after leading the Broncos to a 9-4 record, Coley's team picked up the fIrst playoff win in school history; all in the programs second varsity season.
JON KORFAS Outstanding Athlete Jon Korfas led the San Marcos Royals basketball team to Channel League Championships in each year from 1979 to 1981. In his last two years, the "runnin" Royals posted a combined record of 50-2 appearing in the CIF Finals in 1981. Jon earned First Team All Channel League honors in 1979, 1980 and 1981 and was named MVP in both 1980 and 1981. Jon was voted 1st Team All-CIF in 1981 and 2nd Team All-CIF in 1979 and 1980. Following an impressive high school career, Jon attended USC during the 1981-1982 season and helped the team qualify for NCAA Tournament. In 1982, Jon transferred to Pepperdine where for the next four years, he played for Jim Harrick. Under Harrick, the Waves won two West Coast Athletic Conference Championships and played in two NCAA Tournaments. Jon earned Honorable Mention WCAC in 1985. After college, Jon played professionally in Greece for nearly fifteen years. His team won the Greek Championship in 1992 and European Championships twice in the midnineties. At the conclusion of his playing career, Jon coached in Greece from 2000-2002. Jon is currently the Head Coach of the boys' basketball team at Santa Ynez High School where his teams qualified for CIF playoffs in two of the past three years. The journey to the CIF playoffs was flooded with exciting games including a 61-60 overtime victory over Cabrillo early in the season. 5
