'Pi1509 Stale Streel and235 West Pueblo StreelTolophone ~2! .. ~<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Barbara</strong> once again became the"City 01 Champions" during the 1975-76school year.Each high school in the area hadeither a team or individual capture a CIF,Southern Section, championship.Carpinteria H igh, led by first-yearcoach Lou Panizzon , finally got past its oldnemesis Paso Robles and won the Class Afoot ball championship for the lirst time in theschool's history by defeating Los AngelesLutheran in the linals before an overflowcrowd at Carpenteria's Memorial Stadium.Only one local high school failed toreach the lootball play<strong>of</strong>fs, with ChannelLeague champion San Marcos bowing in theseco nd round and <strong>Santa</strong> Barbrara and BishopDiego su ffering defeats in the opening round .Actually, a girls' team won the area'sfirst CIF title 0 1 the season when coach LindaDawson 's Bishop Diego High volleyballsq uad captured the Class AA crown. It wasthe third CIF championship in the school'shistory.Mrs. Dawson's quest for a secondchampionship, th is time in basketball, wasfoited when her Chardinals fell in thequarter-finals to Brawley , 61-60, aftermaking the 385-mile trip to the desert.Bishop was top-seeded in the play<strong>of</strong>fs.<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Barbara</strong> High's soccer team wasthe only local squad heavily favored io win achampionship and the top-ranked Donsdidn't upset the odds. In four yearsas head coach at SBHS, Manual Garcia hasposted an 85·3-4 record .Not all champions played on a team .Two girls from Dos Pueblos High--B.J.Hinchman and Mary-Rose Oell--com bined totake the girls' tennis title. Gary Fischer, <strong>of</strong>Dos Pueblos, at 106 pounds and MikeGordon, <strong>of</strong> San Marcos, at 141 , each took thetitle in their respective weight classificationsat the e lF wrestling finals. Fischer then wenton to win the slate championship a weeklater.<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Barbara</strong> H igh's basketballsq uad gave local fans many thrills byreaching the elF quarter-finals before fallingto eventual Class AAAA champion LongBeach Poly before a jam-packed crowd at theSBCC Sports Pavilion. Bishop Diego wasco-champion <strong>of</strong> the Tri-Valley League andwas eliminated in the second round <strong>of</strong> theClass A play<strong>of</strong>fs, while Carpinteria lost in thefirst round.San Marcos breezed to the ChannelLeague championship and then took seventhplace in the CIF championship swimmingmeet.
