Welcome
Dear Honorees, Families and Athletic Community:
Welcome to the 26th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet, cosponsored
by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table and
the City of Santa Barbara Recreation Department. As you entered
the Red Lion Inn tonight, you were greeted by the many volunteers
who make these events possible. Many thanks to Paul
Menzel, Chairman, and his committee for organizing tonight's
event. Countless hours of hard work, research, and organization
is the only formula that makes tonight's event successful, and we
all owe those involved a great deal of gratitude. Tonight's event
honors the amateur athletes who have demonstrated that the best
of their abilities are superior to others in their respective field of
competition. We are pleased to induct four individuals into the
Hall of Fame for their accomplishments and contributions in
amateur athletics.
Tonight is also a reunion for the many athletes who chose this
event to renew acquaintances and relive fond memories. Through
athletics we all have developed relationships and memories that
last a lifetime. It is our hope that this banquet continues to
provide that forum while acknowledging the hard work and
determination of the champions from within our community.
Thank you to all the banquet sponsors that assist us financially to
underwrite this event. Their contributions allow student-athletes
to attend at a more affordable price in addition to the cost of the
many awards. I encourage your patronage of these fine local
businesses who support amateur athletics in our community.
Mariana de Sefia
Mariana de Seiia has dedicated her personal and professional
life to opening the world of recreation and sport to those with
disabilities. Her lifetime commitment to helping athletes "adapt"
to sports was inspired by her volunteer experience with the
Special Olympics over 15 years ago. Since then, Mariana has
developed into a nationally recognized professional in the
rapidly growing field of adaptive recreation.
Mariana earned her Bachelor's Degree in Health Studies and
Physical Therapy from UCSB and advanced credentials in
Therapeutic Recreation at Cal State Northridge. Joining the
Santa Barbara Parks & Recreation Department in 1980, de Seiia
currently serves as Recreation Supervisor for all adaptive
programs offered to the physically disabled in our community.
Despite depleting funding for adaptive programs, de Seiia
pursues her professional goals with the same drive and competitive
spirit that is the trademark of the special athletes she
serves. Between fund-raising to maintain adaptive programming,
Mariana volunteers for the Special Olympics, Easter
Seals Society, Coalition for Community Access and the Multiple
Sclerosis Society. She works part time in the Head Injury
Program at the Rehabilitation Institute and has given speeches,
published articles and produced a video on creating opportunities
for the disabled athlete to enjoy the rewards of recreation
that we often take for granted. 5

Special
by Mayor David Shiffman. It is
presented annually to a "Special
Diego Sandoval
Diego Sandoval, the 1993 Santa Barbara Special Olympics
Athlete of the Year, is a resident of the Devereux Foundation,
where he first started participating in Special Olympics in 1991.
He quickly became involved by joining the basketball and softball
teams. He was the starting pitcher on the 1991 Devereux team
that went to the Special Olympics State Games at UCLA. Jim
Haberay, the Devereux golf coach, noticed Diego's excellent
swing and asked him to join the golf team. Diego proved to be
such a quick study that he played in the first annual Special
Olympics Golf tournament at Sandpiper Golf Course. Later in
1991, Diego found his true love in power lifting. He trains 4 days
a week for 3+ hours through a 3 month membership donated by
Gold's gym in Goleta.
Mitch Torina, Diego's lifting coach says, "The sport has given
Diego a strong sense of accomplishment and self-esteem; his
personality has grown as he has gotten confidence through Special
Olympics." Diego explains, "There is trouble all over. I love doing
Special Olympics and body building. I love the way it makes my
body feel and look. One of my dreams is to get big and muscular.
Diego is an accomplished artist. He has sold some of his free-hand
drawings. After he graduates from Devereux and learns to drive,
Diego would like to get a job perhaps with Special Olympics. He
would also like to coach and help other athletes in power lifting.

History
of the
Athletic
Round Table
T
wenty-six years ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar
Uyesaka sat sipping coffee at Caesar's Restaurant,
[] talking about the need for a sports group in Santa
Barbara that could pitch in and help out the local
athletic community in times of need. After Jerry and Caesar
shared a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa Barbara
Athletic Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement
and betterment of all sports and athletics in the greater Santa
Barbara area.
The Round Table got off to a fast start. Its first organizational
meeting was held at Santa Barbara's East Beach onJanuary 25,
1968. Hundreds of people attended this meeting and over 200
joined that evening as Charter Members.
The Round Table's first annual banquet was held at Santa
Barbara City College onJune 22,1968. A number of outstanding
athletes in a variety of sports were honored and the
evening's highlight was the induction of local athletes into the
Round Table's Hall of Fame.
Harry's Plaza Cafe was the site of the Round Table's first press
luncheon held on September 14, 1970. This program was
initiated by the new-president, Bill Bertka. These weekly
luncheons were similar to a "Monday Morning Quarterback
Club." All nine area schools were represented by the head
coaches of the sport in season. For 24 years, the Round Table
luncheons have continued to be held at Harry's every Monday,
attended by standing-room only crowds.
Since their first meetintg back in 1968, the Santa Barbara
Athletic Round Table has helped hundreds of individuals and
organizations by raising funds to support their athletic programs.
Through membership dues, contributions, fund-raisers,
and grant applications, the Round Table has raised more
than $1,500,000!
Funds are distributed according to need. The Round Table is
proud that it has been able to help athletes at all levels compete
in events they would otherwise not have been able to attend.
With continued community support, the Round Table is confident
Santa Barbara's sports opportunities will continue to
grow with each new season.
Kathleen O'Conner
The 'Women in Sports' movement has gained tremendous
momentum in the last decade. The Athletic Round Table is proud to
recognize one of the true pioneers in establishing athletic opportunity
for the female athlete. Kathleen O'Conner, a Santa Barbara
native, received her education locally at Carpinteria High, SBCC,
and UCSB. After graduating in 1968, she established the first full-time
Girls' Physical Education program at Laguna Blanca school and
coached four sports. She taught P.E. and science at Goleta Valley
Junior High before moving on to the Santa Barbara City College
Physical Education Department.
Kathleen developed and implemented the first Women's Athletic
Program at SBCC, which included volleyball and tennis. As Health,
Physical Education and Recreation instructor, she turned her professional
concern to an even more contemporary challenge - drug
abuse in athletics.
O'Conner co-founded the Student Athlete Assistance Program at
SBCC. This program has been used and recognized as a model for
substance abuse prevention throughout California. Kathy is also the
first Academic Advisor for SBCC athletes, both men and women. She
has stayed close to her favorite sport by volunteering as the statistician
for both the men's and women's basketball teams at SBCC for
the past 15 years.
As a woman establishing many "firsts" in athletic programing,
Kathleen epitomizes the leadership qualities of this award's founder.

conclusion of his Sophomore year. Upon his arrival, Sunny
wasted no time getting involved in school and the community.
Sunny was elected to the position of ASB President at San Marcos
after just 7 months at the school, and competed at the varsity level
in three sports: basketball, baseball and track. Sunny also
immersed himself in the community, volunteering as a basketball
coach for the Santa Barbara Special Olympics and the Goleta
Boys and Girls Club.
Academically, Sunny has maintained a 4.2 GPA in advanced
classes while at San Marcos, and scored a combined best of 1340
Dick Mires
Dick Mires is not unfamiliar with the Santa Barbara Athletic Round
Table Hall of Fame Banquet. He has planned it, organized it, and as
President, has presented it. Standing at the podium, summoning
award presentors, and congratulating winners has been part of that
responsibility. And he did it so well.
Even receiving an award is not foreign to the personable Mires. In
1972 he was honored by the Round Table as the High School Coach
of the Year, having led Dos Pueblos High School to one of their most
successful football years.
But the R.F. MacFarland Memorial Trophy is an honor of great
significance, for it acknowledges his years of service to the community
and his caring and continued concern for the youth of the
greater Santa Barbara area. He spent 15 years coaching at Dos
Pueblos H.S. eight of which were spent as Head Football Coach and
Athletic Director. Mires unselfishly served as President of the Round
Table for two years and is currently a member of the Board of
Directors. He was a member of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic
Committee as Venue Director of the Rowing and Canoeing event at
Casitas Lake and is a Board Member and Past President of the S. B.
Rowing Foundation.
It is for tremendous service and to recall the lives he has touched,
that Dick Mires is honored with this most prestigious award. We
salute the Mires family, wife-Nancy, son-David and daughter-Julie,
and thank them for sharing their husband and father with us.

Gregg Wilson
University of California at Santa Barbara
In his fifteen seasons at the helm of UCSB swimming, Gregg
Wilson has posted a dual meet record of 122-72. Even more
impressively, his squads have collected 18 Big West Conference
Championships, a record-setting 13 by his men's team
and 5 by his women's teams. Wilson has been named Men's
Coach of the Year 8 times and Women's Coach of the Year 5
times during his tenure in the Big West Conference.
Among the All-Americans he has coached is Olympic Gold
Medalist, Richard Schroeder, who has been elected as a
member of the Hall of Fame by the Athletic Round Table.
A native of Walnut Creek, California, Wilson attended Diablo
Valley Junior College before he went to UC Berkeley. While at
Cal, he participated in both water polo and swimming. At
Diablo Valley he did the same and was an All-American.
Wilson led the men's swim and dive team to its 15th consecutive
and 16th overall Big West Championship. He led the
women's team to its 6th Big West Championship in 10 years.
The Gauchos men's and women's programs were one of only
eleven Division I schools in the country to be honored as All-
Academic teams by the College Swimming Coaches Association
of America.

Norris Fletcher
Bishop Diego High School
Norris Fletcher thought he could.
He thought the Bishop Cardinals
football team could. And before
the 1992 season was over, he had
the young kids thinking that they
could. Perhaps they realized that
"Coach" might be on to something
when they tied league rival Carpinteria
6-6. They won their next 5
games which included wins in the
prelims, quarters and semis of the
CIF SS Championships. As their opponents
realized: "It's not the size
of the dog in the fight, its the size of
the fight in the dog."
His unbelievable winning season
may have seemed like a miracle,
but truly it was the result of dedication,
hard work, perseverance and
great teaching. Norris teaches confidence,
self esteem, and the belief
that you can. His wife Barbara
taught him that if you really believe
you can, you can because even
breast and lymph cancer can't stop
you. She would know.
Satini Puailoa
San Marcos High School
In 1986 Satini Puailoa realized one
of his ambitions: he was selected
as the head Football Coach at
SMHS, following in the footsteps
of his famous father, Sut, a highly
respected Football Coach. Puailoa
assumed a senior class that had
won only 3 games in 3 years. His
first year, the Royals went 3-7! In
the next 6 years, Puailoa led the
Royals to 5 CIF SS playoff berths,
and ultimately to the finest season
in SMHS Football history: 1992!
Dominating as City and Channel
League Champs, the Royals 10-2,
went into the semi-finals against
Hawthrone and were only a bounce
of the ball away from CIF SS Championship
game.
His success was no accident or
surprise. The intensity, the discipline,
the preparedness, the execution
and influence of Satini III
carried through. He is a superb
football coach, master teacher, innovator
and a motivator. A pro! 13

Tom Byron's first college job was coaching soccer,
basketball, and baseball. It didn't get any easier.
He came to Westmont College in 1965 as Basketball
Coach and Athletic Director, and within a short
period of time added a third major responsibility,
that of Dean of Students.
When you peer into the personal background of this
man you immediately focus upon krywords.
Ron Mulder, present Athletic Director at Westmont
says: "Tom was a great leader, he got the most out of
people. He was also a spiritual leader on campus
and in the community. Although small in stature he
was competitive and fiery - very determined. Tom
was also instrumental in the planning of our athletic
buildings and Murchison Gymnasium. Tom Byron
was just a super person."
14
1993 HALL OF FAME
TOM BYRON JR.
Coach
Byron won highest athletic and academic honors in
football and baseball at Wheaton College where he
majored in Philosophy and Theology. He also earned
his Master's Degree at Temple University and was a
USC Doctoral Candidate.
But the only thing he was unable to tackle, throw
out, or trap was the melanoma that benched him
during the '71-'72 season. He was 10 - 1 when the
illness forced him to step aside. He died in February
of 1972.
The spirit of Tom Byron lives in our community and
in the hearts of his family, wife, Dorothy Byron
Hanna; USMC Reserve Major, Tom Jr., and high
school biology teacher, Annie.
And in the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall
of Fame.

How's your math? Add this list of numbers:
8+8+5+6+3+3+3+2=?
If your answer was 38 (or even close) you were
wrong. The correct answer is Diane Sebastian,
superb athlete, Bishop Garcia Diego High School,
class of 1978.
Those significant numbers represent 8 varsity letters
in volleyball, basketball, and track, 8 All-League
honors,S League MVP's, 3 CIF Team Championships,
and 2 times Santa Barbara Athletic Rround
Table Athlete of the Year.
She remains the only female athlete to have been
named CIFSS MVP in two sports in the same year.
Now Diane Pestolesi of Huntington Beach, she and
husband-Tom (wouldn't you guess - he's a coach)
are the proud parents of Tommy, age 5 Y2, Kari, age
4, and by this evening, baby Danny. Diane is a
1993 HALL OF FAME
Diane Sebastian Pestolesi
Outstanding Athlete
Critical Care nurse at Orange County's Hoag
And the numbers don't stop. A three-time Volleyball
All-American at the University of Hawaii, a National
Championship, the Nation's Best in 1980, and State
of Hawaii's Female Athlete of the Year in 1981.
She hadn't quite gotten enough so in 1982 and 1983
she became a graduate assistant at the University of
Hawaii. You guessed it, two more national championships.
Add a few years of Olympic and professional competition,
then ask her what her hobbies and interests
are - being a wife and Mom - and sports.
Good luck, Di, and congratulations!
Where do we start?
Four-time Olympian, world's best water polo
player, ca ptain of our national and Olympic teams,
Doctor of Chiropractic, three-time university All
American, NCAA Scholar-Athlete, male model for
the Coliseum'S Olympic Gateway, or second in
the Jeep Superstars Competition?
So where do we start?
How about starting at San Marcos High School?
Class of 1976, student leader, outstanding scholar,
outstanding citizen, great family, Captain, All
Channel League Player of the Year, All-ClF, All
American, and a full ride scholarship to Pepperdine
University where he graduated Magna Cum
16
1993 HALL OF FAME
TERRY SCHROEDER
Outstanding Athlete
Terry Schroeder is probably best recognized for
his inspirational leadership of our National Water
Polo Team in 1980,1984,1988, and 1992.
Schroeder and his wife Lori - we should say Dr.
Lori - live in Agoura Hills where they both practice
Chiropractic medicine. What else would we
expect? There are fifty-nine chiropractors in the
Schroeder family, two of whom practice locally,
his father, Robert, and his brother, Lance.
He is also the Water Polo Coach at Pepperdine
University where in 1989 where he was named
Coach of the Year in the Big West Conference.
So where do we end? How about with the big San
Marcos Royal carrying the American Flag during
the closing ceremonies at Seoul, Korea in 1988.

The winningest pitcher in the history of Santa
Barbara High school baseball. That's a lot of territory.
But that what the record book says: Rino Filippin,
Pitcher, 8-4 as a Sophomore, 9-3 as aJunior, and
12-2 as a Senior for a composite record of 29-9. Like
we said, the winningest pitcher in the history of
SBHS baseball.
Filippin lettered two years each in football, basketball,
and baseball, was All-CIF as a football tailback
in the single-wing, and was All-CIF in baseball
during both his Junior and Senior year.
But it was baseball that was Filippin's sport. After
graduating from SBHS in 1955, he attended SBCC
where he led the Vaqueros to a State Championship
as a Junior College All-American pitcher.
Following his career at SBCC he signed with the
1993 HALL OF FAME
RINO FILIPPIN
Outstanding Athlete
Cleveland Indians and played five years of professional
ball.
When asked about Filippin, Chuck Sylvester, his
coach at SBHS, said of the right hander: "Rino was a
very smart and intelligent pitcher who had great
control and won games with his head as well as with
his arm, and he did have a great arm."
Sylvester added: "Rino was a natural baseball player
and proba bly could have been All-CIF at any position.
Filippin, who is with the U.S. Postal service, lives in
Goleta with his wife, Julie. They have a son Bill and
a daughter Traci.
Rino Filippin - one of our greatest!
Since 1972, whenJay Smith became a member of the
Goleta Union School District Board of Trustees (and
President,) he has volunteered his services to 24
organizations.
During that same period of time, he has served on 12
executive boards, and been named Chairman or
President on 10 occasions.
As a point of reference, some of those 24 groups he
has served are the SB Athletic Round Table, Goleta
Valley Hospital, Goleta Valley Youth Sports Association,
A YSO, Dos Pueblos High School Site Council,
Santa Barbara School District Educational Foundation,
Santa Barbara Foundation and La Cumbre
Golf and Country Club (that tells you about his
hobby.)
In his spare moments he works more than full time
as the Senior Vice-President, General Counsel, and
18
1993 HALL OF FAME
JAY SMITH
Community Leader
Secretary of Santa Barbara Bank and Trust.
The rest of his time is spent with his wife Sally, an
Administrative Assistant at UCSB, daughter Julie,
and son Taylor.
Modesty is one of Jay's virtues, it is not easy to glean
information about his volunteerism. Like the easy
and anonymity with which he has administered the
High Five Golf Tournament for the last nine years.
At the end of this year that event will have earned
over a quarter million dollars for local high school
athletics. That is not modest!
UC Berkeley and their Boalt Hall School of Law
should be proud of this grad. The community of
Santa Barbara is.
Somehow Community Leader seems too modest.

r-rhe Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Scholar Athlete of the
1 Month Award was initiated in September 1986 after the
Round Table's Board of Directors recognized the need to honor
those students who are not only successful athletes, but who
maintain strong academic and extracurricular credentials.
Qualifications for nomination include participation in varsity
athletics at the high school level and in designated athletic
programs at the college level. Academic qualifications include
outstanding grade point averages, usually greater than 3.5, in
conjunction with other scholarly activities such as honor societies,
scientific societies, extracurricular activities and outstanding
aptitude test scores for high school. Students have been
selected by principals, senior counselors, athletic directors and
coaches at the various high schools and colleges in the Santa
Barbara area, in association with the Athletic Round Table.
The Athletic Round Table feels that the significance of this award
goes beyond recognizing individual students who have outstanding
academic and athletic records. It also is a reminder to
the community that it is possible for a student to participate in
athletics and still maintain outstanding academic achievement.
