A national approach to greenhouse and energy reporting - the
National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme (NGERS) - was
established by the Australian Government in 2007. Since establishing
NGERS, the demand for services to assist liable parties comply with
the scheme has increased each year. Melbourne is home to the
majority of industry specialists required to monitor, report and verify
their emissions for NGERS, creating an ongoing demand for carbon
market services.

Carbon Market Institute
The Carbon Market Institute (CMI) is a newly established,
Melbourne headquartered, organisation whose objective is
to assist Australian businesses with the implementation of
climate-related markets both in terms of managing their risk and
pursuing business opportunities.
The CMI works in concert with Australian industry and other key
stakeholders to position Australia as an emissions trading hub
for the Asia Pacific region.
An independent not-for-profit company, the CMI is a national
body with strategic national and international partnerships,
affiliations and an outlook, in time, to serve the Asia Pacific
region. The CMI incorporates the Asia Pacific Emissions
Trading Forum, a business network and information service for
companies and agencies with an interest in emissions trading
development both nationally and internationally that has been
operational since 1998.
