NAGAPATTINAM TO SUVARNADWIPA<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Reflecti<strong>on</strong>s</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chola</strong> <strong>Naval</strong> Expediti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>to</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>Asia</strong><br />

Edited by Hermann Kulke, K. Kesavapany and Vijay Sakhuja<br />

The expansi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chola</strong>s from <strong>the</strong>ir base in <strong>the</strong> Kaveri Delta saw this growing power subdue <strong>the</strong><br />

kingdoms of sou<strong>the</strong>rn India, as well as occupy Sri Lanka and <strong>the</strong> Maldives, by <strong>the</strong> early eleventh century.<br />

It was also during this period that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chola</strong>s initiated links with S<strong>on</strong>g China.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>currently, <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>Asia</strong>n polity of Sriwijaya had, through its Sumatran and Malayan ports,<br />

come <strong>to</strong> occupy a key positi<strong>on</strong> in East-West maritime trade, requiring engagement with both S<strong>on</strong>g China<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> north and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chola</strong> kingdom <strong>to</strong> its west. The apparently friendly relati<strong>on</strong>s pursued were, however,<br />

<strong>to</strong> be disrupted in 1025 by <strong>Chola</strong> naval expediti<strong>on</strong>s against fourteen key port cities in Sou<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>Asia</strong>. This<br />

volume examines <strong>the</strong> background, course and effects of <strong>the</strong>se expediti<strong>on</strong>s, as well as <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>text<br />

of <strong>the</strong> events. It brings <strong>to</strong> light many aspects of this key period in <strong>Asia</strong>n his<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

Unprecedented in <strong>the</strong> degree of detail assigned <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ry of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chola</strong> expediti<strong>on</strong>s, this volume is<br />

also unique in that it includes translati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>temporary Tamil and Sanskrit inscripti<strong>on</strong>s relating <strong>to</strong><br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>Asia</strong> and of <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong>g dynasty Chinese texts relating <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chola</strong> Kingdom.<br />
