Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the members of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA), we are pleased to welcome
you to the 2012 ISHA Annual Scientific Meeting in the beautiful and historic city of Boston, Massachusetts. The
ISHA Program Committee has developed an exciting and educational academic program to emphasize evidence
based medicine, as well as new surgical developments in arthroscopic surgery of the hip and discussion of the
indications and limitations of hip arthroscopy. The ISHA Annual Scientific Meeting provides a unique
international forum for the exchange of scientific information and collaboration in an atmosphere of friendship.
This two and a half day scientific meeting includes an assortment of educational opportunities for attendees
including a variety of symposia, lectures and scientific paper presentations. In addition, a hands on model lab,
electronic posters, small group surgical demonstrations, technical exhibits and two awards, the Trainee Basic
Research Award and the Richard Villar Trainee Excellence in Clinical Research Award, are offered to enhance
your experience. We are honored to have Lanny Johnson as our Presidential Guest Speaker, giving his talk
“Lessons Experienced during an Arthroscopic Surgical Practice “on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 9:00 AM.
We hope you take the time to enjoy the historic city of Boston, Massachusetts. Vibrant, influential and one of
the most historic cities in the United States, Boston offers visitors a wide depth and breadth of activities to
meeting attendees.
The Fourth Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy will be successful as we
welcome attendees and delegates ambitious for scientific exchange. We thank you for your participation in the
2012 ISHA Annual Scientific Meeting and hope you enjoy this invaluable experience in Boston.
Best Regards,
Thomas Sampson, ISHA President 2011 - 2012
Marc Safran, ISHA Program Chair 2012
Overview
The ISHA Annual Scientific Meeting provides a unique international forum for attendees to share scientific
information and learn the latest advances of arthroscopic surgery of the hip. This three day meeting includes a
variety of symposia and lectures. Additionally, hands on model lab, electronic posters and technical exhibits
are offered.
Target Audience
Orthopaedic Surgeons, Physical Therapists, Specialty Physicians, Athletic Trainers, Physician Assistants,
Rehabilitation Therapists, Medical Students, Residents and Fellows
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
‣ Describe the pertinent arthroscopic anatomy and physiology of the lower extremity, pelvis and hip
joint
‣ Identify standard portal placement for central and peripheral compartments
‣ Define and implement hip arthroscopy techniques in their practice
‣ Define the new technologies currently available for hip arthroscopy surgery, as well as the
advantages and disadvantages of different surgical techniques
‣ Define how to use the new technology in their practice and implement various methods of operative
hip arthroscopy, including debridement, labral repair and correction of impingement
Accreditation for General Sessions
This activity is planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Medical
Education Resources (MER), International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) and MCJ Consulting. MER is
accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Medical Education Resources designate this live activity for a maximum of 18.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits .
Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Lessons Experienced during an Arthroscopic Surgical Practice
Saturday, September 29, 2012 9:00am
Dr. Lanny Johnson is a medical doctor specializing in orthopaedic surgery. As such he
was one of the pioneers of arthroscopic surgery. Among his contributions was the
invention of motorized instrumentation. He pioneered arthroscopy of the temporal
mandibular joint, the shoulder, and elbow, wrist, and finger joints. He was perhaps
first to perform arthroscopic shoulder reconstruction (August 1982). These
contributions as well as hip, knee and ankle arthroscopy were documented in
Arthroscopic Surgery; Principles and Practice in 1986. He was perhaps the first to
Dr. Lanny Johnson
develop computerized medical records in 1982. Retired from clinical practice since
1995, he continues research and development projects related to cartilage healing
with two major publications in 2011. His avocation includes the past 10 years as
Instructor on PGA tour and recently published, There is More to Putting than Meets
the Eye. This is an in depth study of PGA tour players putting techniques. He is a
recognized innovator and holder of more than 50 US patents in surgery and golf.
