Now in its tenth year, the Zeltsman
Marimba Festival returns to Appleton’s
Lawrence University campus for the fifth
time this summer. With goals to
familiarize the public with marimba music
and bring students together with faculty,
this festival brings fierce and feisty music
to the Fox Cities.
Nancy Zeltsman, the organizer of the
festival, says students are so enthralled by
the performance that after the concerts
they say that they’re still processing
everything they learned, and they will be
processing it for the rest of their lives.
“It blows their minds and opens up their
world for what music is about and what
they can do with their careers,” Zeltsman
says. “It’s a total immersion that leaves
them reeling with ideas.”
The festival’s participants change from
year to year, and according to Zeltsman
there are some who have done the show
six or seven times with a general 75–85
percent difference in participants from
year to year. While programming for the
closed seminars offered has some repeats
based on what has been successful in the
past, the concert styles change.
“The ideas are based on my travels,
festivals I’ve been to, and performers I’ve
met around the world,”
Zeltsman says.
This year’s festival drew many of its ideas
from Marimba 2010, a marimba festival
in Minneapolis. That festival featured
theme-based concerts and inspired
Zeltsman’s “Marimba Around the
World” concerts, which feature a 10-
piece band each playing with a distinctly
different ethnic and cultural flavor.
“It’s always been a leap of faith for them
to come by not knowing any of the
performers,” she says. “We have an
amazing group of artists and it’s really an
unusual opportunity to hear
a number of different
people play the same
instrument in one night.”
Aside from the
multicultural aspect, there
is also a variety of
presentation styles at work
with the concerts, including
performance art-based
concerts and a free, familyfriendly
concert on July 4.
In addition, the June 29
concert features Japanese
Marimba. Admission for
that concert is free, but
donations will be accepted
to benefit Japanese
earthquake relief funds.
There will be performers
from Japan, including those
from areas affected by the
quake who will talk about what it was
like to be there when it happened.
Zeltsman says she is excited for “an
incredible, moving performance and the
marimba gaining acceptance in the
classical music world. We want people to
think, ‘I’m hearing an amazing musical
piece, and it happens to be on a
marimba.’”
