My task as Sightings Editor did not look unusually difficult when the<br />
first mail bag arrived on the ferry; it’s when the second mailbag<br />
loaded down the ferry so much that the seas washed over the<br />
gunwales that I knew this issue would require considerable time.<br />
Movies have used Land <strong>Rovers</strong> to pump up their appeal since<br />
the days of Series I’s. Fans of The Green Zone watched Matt Damon<br />
co-star with a Defender 110, the movie on the US-led overthrow of<br />
Iraq. Although Damon portrays an American official, he travels about<br />
in this fine British product. Steve Eisenberg, Manchester Center, VT,<br />
Priscilla Corazon, Columbia, MD, Gregory Duckworth, N. Myrtle<br />
Beach, SC, Laura Minner, Carnation, WA, and Richard Thomas,<br />
Savannah, GA, noted this oddity.<br />
According to the trailers for Sex in the City 2, Defender SVX’s<br />
cavort in the desert dunes of Abu Dubai. Alex Osias, Denver, CO,<br />
Nate Rutterbush, Fresno, CA, Joshua O’Neill, Hoboken, NJ,<br />
Theodore Casareo, Jersey City, NJ, Adrian Borunda, San Antonio,<br />
TX, Jeff Pearl, Wisconsin Rapids, WI, and Chris Richichi felt<br />
compelled to watch the ladies relive their consumption-driven lives.<br />
Sherry Block, Hadlyme, CT, notes with pride that even though<br />
the villain in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo rolled his Discovery 8<br />
times, it still landed square and intact. Rory McDonnell, St. Marys,<br />
Ontario, watched Michael Caine in Harry Brown drive around in a<br />
Series II-A. Gerald Sapienza, Chesapeake, VA, and Derek Leath<br />
watched a Range Rover and a Discovery in The Informant. Jeffrey<br />
Pearl, Wisconsin Rapids, WI, saw a Defender 130 shot full of holes<br />
in Layer Cake. Faye Dunaway and Mickey Rourke once starred in<br />
Barfly, as did a red Series III, according the Mark Maz, Maquoketa,<br />
IO, who was, “really not expecting to see a Land Rover in this movie.”<br />
Derek Leath, Frontenac, MO, spotted a Range Rover P-38 in<br />
The Time Traveler’s Wife.<br />
Of movies mentioned in earlier issues, Chloe Miller spotted the<br />
Series III in The Princess Protection Program. Dan Parrow, Springfield,<br />
MA, remembered the Discovery in Volcano. Jeffrey Austin,<br />
Chesapeake, VA, enjoyed Land <strong>Rovers</strong> in You Only Live Twice.<br />
Catalogue companies often spice up their offerings with Land<br />
<strong>Rovers</strong>. Boston Proper, a woman’s clothing concern, included two<br />
Series <strong>Rovers</strong>, reports Eric DePetris, Orange Park, FL, and James<br />
Dargan, Plymouth, MA. Keith Armstrong and Donald Smith noted<br />
the Filson catalogue featured a Defender 130 on safari. Holland &<br />
Holland also interested Jeff Foland, Clarksville, OH, with Land Rover<br />
on safari. James Pickle, Manchester, ME, found a Series II-A in the<br />
F.M Allen catalogue. The Sierra Trading Post catalogue extols its Kelty<br />
tents with an LR3, notes Paul Kennington, La Grande, OR, and Ray<br />
Herrmann, East Chatham, NY. Mike Archer, Victoria, BC, Canada,<br />
noted that a Defender was used in a fashion layout in Flare, a<br />
Canadian fashion magazine.<br />
Annie Clark, Telluride, CO, noted a Land Rover in the photo<br />
book of The Ski Journal. Jerry Smith, Coos Bay, OR, and Stephen<br />
Johnson, Johns Island, SC, found a Series III adorning the pages of<br />
foodie bible Bon Appetit. John Camp, Athens, GA, found a nice<br />
write-up on Steve Ayers’ Series III in a Haggerty auto insurance<br />
mailer. Wernher Wiehman, Kirwin, KS, delighted in reading an article<br />
on agronomist Norman Boulaug in Hobby Farmer, complete<br />
with his Series I. Popular Mechanics wrote up an LR3 modified for<br />
animal photography work, notes Kevin Hawkins, Yukon, OK. Edward<br />
Busse, Woodbridge, VA, found the Feb/March 2010 issue of Virginia<br />
Sportsman included a great article on the ROAV Mid-Atlantic Rally.<br />
Television ads have only a few seconds to grab your attention,<br />

noted that, “even other car companies like Land Rover,” when he<br />
spotted a Discovery in the background of a Subaru commercial.<br />
Chevron is back with Land <strong>Rovers</strong>, saw Jeff Labbe, Twekesbury,<br />
Quebec. Nicholas Dover claims a Canadian Kraft mac and cheese<br />
commercial includes a toy Defender 110. Danton Cardoso, Kirksville,<br />
MO, saw an ad for Symbalta which included a Series I.<br />
TV shows use Land <strong>Rovers</strong> to enhance their ratings, which is why<br />
HBO’s “How to Make it in America” includes a Range Rover Sport in<br />
one episode, noted Victor Estorga, El Paso, TX. Shawn Chummar,<br />
Beaverton, OR, found a Range Rover in “Burn Notice”. Naturally,<br />
you’d expect to find a Discovery I in “Speed’s Dangerous Drives”, and<br />
Jeffrey Austin, Chesapeake, VA, found just that. Randy Kremer,<br />
Paramus, NJ, was delighted to see that “Earth Day Play Date” on<br />
Nick Jr. would include a Series Rover for Dora and Diego the Explorers.<br />
Norman Sturgeon and Joe Donati, Wolcott, VT, saw a Series<br />
Rover in an episode of Alton Brown’s “Good Eats” program. Todd<br />
Cannatelli also spotted the Discovery II on “House”. Jonathan<br />
March, Roanoke, VA, Randy Hopkins, Grass Valley, CA, and Dean<br />
Minner, Carnation, VA, also watched a “Mythbusters” episode in<br />
which a Range Rover is used to test bulletproofing. Lori Peterson,<br />
Acworth, GA, enjoyed seeing a Range Rover in “The New Adventures<br />
of Old Christine”.<br />
Jon Winningham, Kansas City, MO, found a Defender 90 NAS<br />
in a PBS special on Pluto. Brian Homer, Half Moon Bay, CA, and his<br />
6-year-old son watched “Phineas and Ferb” and delighted in spotting<br />
a Series Rover. Lucas Forgue, Seekonk, MA, saw a Defender in Les<br />
Stroud’s “Off the Grid”. Peter Land, St. Paul, MN, saw a Defender<br />
90 in an episode of “Planet Mechanics”. Gene Lytle, Boulder Creek,<br />
CA, watched the customizers on “Unique” pimp out a Range Rover<br />
for a Yankees player. Grant Turpin, Deerfield, NH, noted a Range<br />
Rover driven by a real estate broker in HGTV’s “The Property Shop”.<br />
Hannah Thayer, Abingdon, VA, was impressed that the lead in<br />
“The Bachelor” chose to woo his lucky date with a Range Rover. Luke<br />
Seashore, Chapel Hill, NC, is only 6-years-old, but spotted a “cool<br />
Series” Rover in an episode of “Shaun the Sheep”. Andrew Lyles,<br />
New York, NY, enjoyed a “Top Gear” episode comparing the expedition<br />
qualities of a Range Rover Classic, a Toyota Land Cruiser and a<br />
Suzuki model. Guess who won? Jeffrey Austin, Chesapeake, VA,<br />
watched the show “Visions of Canada” and noted they included a<br />
Range Rover SE parked at the president’s house of the University of<br />
Toronto. Jeff also watched “The Weekend Guy” on ION television to<br />
find a nice program on the Toronto Area Land Rover club. Joe<br />
Sobaski, Coal Valley, IL, enjoyed seeing a Defender 90 in an episode<br />
of “Avec Eric”.<br />
Before Jim Cheney was deployed to Afghanistan, he enjoyed an<br />
Esquire article online, “The 12 Styles of American Man”. Naturally,<br />
the “Woodman” had a Defender 90 in his driveway. Glenn Grove<br />
found a sidebar on Series Land <strong>Rovers</strong> in the online “Cessna Caravan<br />
News”. Michael Fisher, Morrisville, PA, found a Series Rover when<br />
looking up Sweet Maria’s coffee website. John Bufton, Galveston,<br />
TX, found a Series Rover in a magazine article in “Hemmings Motor<br />
News”. Col. Paul Duray, Rockville, MD, enjoyed the cover shot of<br />
Discovery I from the Mid-Atlantic Rally in Virginia Sportsman, a magazine<br />
that usually focuses on, “country estates, fine dining, and highend<br />
hunting locales.”<br />
John Belt enjoyed listening to AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the<br />
Top” and spotting a Series Land Rover in their video. Nestor Nicolas,<br />
San Pueblo, CA, noted the Black Eyed Peas video “I’ve Got a Feeling”<br />
