2 EVENTS Say NO to risks at work! The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council was established on 1 April 2008 to raise the workplace safety and health standards in Singapore. The Council comprises 20 leaders from the major industry sectors, the Government, unions and professionals from the legal, insurance and academic fields. The Council’s key thrusts are to build industry capabilities to better manage WSH, to promote safety and health at work, to recognise companies with good WSH records and to set acceptable WSH practices. There are six industry committees focusing on the areas of construction and landscaping, healthcare, logistics and transport, marine works, chemical, metalworking and manufacturing. Three functional committees have also been formed to identify, champion and implement initiatives in the areas of engagement and outreach and industry capability building. SHINE is a quarterly newsletter on workplace safety and health issues. EVENTS 3 This year, the National Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Campaign raises a clear challenge to all workplaces with its key message “Say NO to Risks at Work”. Focused on preventing everyday risks in workplaces, the Campaign strives to heighten public awareness on what employees need to know about the WSH Act and what is expected to keep all workplaces safe and healthy. With the extension of the WSH Act to all workplaces from September 2011, the campaign was one of the key initiatives in the WSH Council’s efforts to reach over 100,000 employers and close to 3 million employees on WSH. Extending its reach from traditional sectors such as construction and marine, the Campaign reached out to new industries less familiar with WSH issues such as retail, entertainment, administrative services and finance. Kicking off the three-month campaign was the launch event at Raffles Place Park on 20 April 2011, where startling scenes of workplace hazards extruded from the greenery, catching the attention of passersby and employees working in the heart of Singapore’s business district. The launch event was graced by Mr Gan Kim Yong, then the Minister for Manpower, and attended by about 200 industry, professional and union leaders. Minister Gan noted “the WSH profession is gaining credence and popularity, with more taking up a WSH career”. He pointed to the newly formed Workplace Safety and Health Institute (WSHI) to continue sustaining progress on this front as it aims to be a leading institute in WSH knowledge and innovations. Mr Heng Chiang Gnee, Deputy Chairman, WSH Council, also highlighted the critical point that fostering a WSH-conscious workforce and pervasive WSH culture is “the key to sustaining good safety practices.” To this end, the Campaign also marked the launch of the WSH Advocate Programme. The WSH Advocate programme works to empower suitable employees as WSH Advocates to actively inspire, influence and engage their peers to improve workplace safety practices. A key feature of the event was the launch of a new television commercial “Obvious Dangers”, developed by the Council to spread the WSH message to the general workforce. Focusing on everyday risks at work that may be neglected right in plain sight, the TV commercial played out an alarming situation with employees going about their daily tasks, turning a blind eye to the obvious dangers around their workplace. To view the TV commercial, visit www.wshc.sg This year, the campaign calendar included over 100 industry-led activities such as seminars, workshops and roadshows organised by industry partners, and culminated in the 2011 WSH Awards to recognise companies that have achieved excellent WSH performances, established best practices and deployed innovative ideas in their management of WSH issues at their workplace.
