Mission Statement
The Chamber shall strengthen the identity
and enhance the image of our business
community, enabling businesses to grow
and prosper by serving as a unified voice
and providing service to its membership.
A Message from the President
As we begin to enter another beautiful winter on
the Oregon Coast I would just like to say that I hope
everyone now has a copy of the Lincoln City Chamber
of Commerce membership directory very close
to your phone. I know that with this small change in
habit (if it is for you) we will all find much success.
We at the Chamber are very excited about the
prospects of a successful and busy 2012. With many
events and workshops full of education and fun, new
ideas and returning annual plans, we believe that
2012 will certainly be a year for renewed growth
and opportunity for the Chamber office as well as
the membership.
With much optimism and enthusiasm, I would like
to say thank you for all that you have done to support
your Chamber in 2011 and we look forward to your
continued support in 2012.
Happy holidays and best wishes for you and your
loved ones.
A Message from the Executive Director
Gratitude brings Giving
This particular time of year is always an introspective
one for me. Celebrating Thanksgiving with family
and loved ones allows me to slow down and truly
reflect on the many great things/people that are in my
life. And then I begin preparations for the “giving”
season – Christmas. And, yes, I am one of those who
wait to shop at the last minute.
This year is not any different, but by being the
Executive Director of the Lincoln City Chamber of
Commerce I have so much more to be grateful for
which spurs me to give more. Let me explain.
I love what I do. I am inspired daily by the passion,
drive, and commitment of our members and our community.
I have the opportunity to witness, on a regular
basis, the connections the Lincoln City Chamber
of Commerce is able to facilitate. I have seen new
businesses being embraced by established ones in an
offer of support. I get to participate in collaborative
efforts to address the needs of our business community.
I have met the most phenomenal people who
have chosen to work, live, raise their families, and
engage in the livability of Lincoln City. I am grateful
to be here and do what I do. And from that I strive
to be a good steward. In recognition of all of your
efforts I continue to look for ways the chamber can
give you the support and services you need. And I
do this with the support of our office manager and
volunteers, the Board of Directors, and you!
As we near the end of 2011 it’s exciting to revisit
the opportunities the chamber has given our members
to participate. From facilitating the beginning
of the Lincoln City Young Professionals, to offering
Free Social Media classes (Spring & Fall), taking on
the Great Oregon Coast Garage Sales, hosting our
first Roundtable Series – Make $$ - Save $$, creating
a new event and fundraiser the Artober Brewfest, not
to mention our Chamber Lunch Forums with quality
speakers, monthly Business After Hours, Ribbon
Cuttings and other celebrations. There are also the
committees that offer our members the opportunity
to support and drive the Chamber into the future
while also promoting their own business.
I look forward to 2012 and the many opportunities
that we, the Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce,
can give you to support you, your business, and our
community.
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
Perseverance: A History of African Americans in
Oregon’s Marion and Polk Counties
A new publication on the history of African Americans in Marion and Polk counties,
Perseverance, will be the subject of a presentation at the North Lincoln County
Historical Museum in recognition of Black History month.
Since the beginning, even before the wagon trains, African Americans have
played an essential part in building Oregon. In Marion and Polk counties, they
overcame the obstacles of wilderness, prejudice, and isolation, helping to create a
vibrant community. They have often been left out of the paintings and statues, but
Perseverance brings you many of their names and describes the ways they have
made history, taking their rightful place among pioneers past and present in the
Oregon’s Minimum Wage Will
Rise to $8.80 Per Hour in 2012
Oregon’s minimum wage rate will increase to $8.80 per hour on January 1, 2012.
The state’s minimum wage is linked to inflation and will rise 30 cents pr hour or 3.5
percent. Oregon’s minimum wage has been set at $8.50 per hour since January 1,
2011.
Oregon had the second-highest state minimum wage in 2011, behind Washington.
Oregon’s 2012 rate will remain lower than Washington’s minimum ($9.04 per hour
as of January 1, 2012) but above the federal minimum wage rate, which rose to $7.25
per hour on July 24, 2009 and has stayed there since.
Oregon’s Hispanic Population Growth: Higher Than
National Average, Lower Than Some Neighbors
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Oregon’s Hispanic population grew by 63 Percent
from 2000 to 2010. This is a faster growth rate than the national average of 43 percent in that
time period, but lower than some of its neighbors. Nevada had the highest growth rate at 82
percent, while California grew below the national average at 28 percent. Even though California’s
growth rate was the lowest, it still had the highest net gain of Hispanics (3,047,000)
which is a bigger gain than the other four states combined (886,000).
Notes from Nonni: What’s the Green Arrow?
When you’ve been looking through our website, have you ever wondered what that little green arrow-looking symbol by the Facebook
and Twitter badge in the top right corner does?
If you click on it, a little window will open up with these words: “Copy the code below and paste it directly into the code of your site!”
Then in a smaller box below are the magic words that, once placed in the code of your website, will allow an image of the Chamber’s logo
to be visible on your website. It will be an active link back to our website. Just copy and paste!
Why would you want such a thing on your website?
First, it will help increase your website’s activity rating by increasing the referral options on your page for each visitor to your page.
Secondly, the image of our Chamber displayed on your website, indicates to the public that you are a member, that you support the goals
and ideals of the Chamber of Commerce. This is important to many shoppers/visitors looking for a trustworthy source.
In this age of trying to maximize advertising efforts, any little bit helps. Try this little trick!
Super Auction II: The Sequel
The Super Auction returns! ~ Only slightly altered. We anticipate an all live webcast in the Spring for this year’s super auction. So
plan your participation now. In the next few months you will be contacted by an Auction representative, so be thinking about the level of
response that matches your desire to join in. Just like in previous years, all contributors will receive recognition on air, on the web and in
print. If your company is putting together a budget for next year, keep this event in mind. Now is the time to tap your vendors to see what
resources are available to them on your behalf! If your tax situation could benefit from some ad expense, please keep the Super Auction
in mind. We have begun collecting sponsorships already! We know the holidays are busy and challenging times, but wanted to get the
word out. If you would like to be an auctioneer or help in any other capacity, please contact the Chamber.
Lincoln City
Chamber of Commerce
Mission Statement
The Chamber shall strengthen the identity
and enhance the image of our business
community, enabling businesses to grow
and prosper by serving as a unified voice
and providing service to its membership.
This is a Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce publication produced by the News-Times.
All content was provided by the Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce.
This month we will all see, as chamber members,
the distribution of our 2011-2012 Lincoln City
Chamber of Commerce Member Directory. Our Executive
Director, Linda Roy and many of our chamber
members have worked very hard making sure
they have published what is one of our most valuable
assets we can utilize as chamber members. After living
with my directory in place of the local phone
book for the past several years, I have felt the need
to pass on how the majority of our membership gains
tremendous value from our directory.
I operate a business, just as many of you do, that
requires local services on a regular basis, including
plumbers, electricians, printers, contractors, banks,
and every other service that you could imagine a
large restaurant would need (and there are so many).
The services that are required for this single business
total into the thousands, if not tens of thousands,
of dollars every year. In the past, with just
the phone book, our products and services were not
always local, and I wasn’t always sure whether they
were Chamber members or not.
After making sure that my Chamber Directory
was my first resource for products and vendors, I’ve
not only found that I am able to support the local
economy more, I am also able to work with chamber
members first, and network with those who might be
more inclined to patronize my business as well. Using
our Chamber Directory keeps money in Lincoln
City, helps build local relationships, and definitely
adds to the strength and value of OUR Lincoln City
Chamber of Commerce.
So as you all receive your Lincoln City Chamber
of Commerce Business Directory 2011-2012,
move over that local phone book, plant your Directory
squarely on your desk, and support your fellow
chamber members. From personal experience I can
promise that you will be happy you did.
