Mission Statement
The Chamber shall strengthen the identity
and enhance the image of our business
community, enabling businesses to grow
and prosper by serving as a unified voice
and providing service to its membership.
A Message from the Executive Director
“I would like a large
with all of the toppings
please...”
I recently visited with one of our retail chamber
members and we began a discussion about the value
of chamber membership and how to some folks the
benefits may seem intangible.
I know the value because our office is on the front
line—the front line for those visiting or thinking of
visiting Lincoln City, or those planning a move to
Lincoln City, or a business who is thinking of opening
a store in Lincoln City, or current citizens needing
to find the business that they just can’t quite remember
the name but they are next to… We answer
thousands of questions each week either through
email, telephone calls, walk-ins, and yes, regular
mail. And how do we respond We send them to you
The Business After Hours host for
September, North Lincoln Sanitary,
1726 SE Hwy 101 Lincoln City,
have joined a campaign called ‘Can
Cancer’ to help with costs beyond
basic medical care for those battling
cancer. Twenty five percent of
those diagnosed with cancer lose
their life savings trying to survive
it. In its billing to customers,
– our members.
That is just ONE of the benefits.
In this same conversation I appreciated how she
broke down the value for her. She said, “Look, I’m
a business owner. I need to look at every one of my
expenditures, even chamber dues. So I broke it down
by the month. I then realized that my monthly chamber
investment was equivalent to my favorite large
pizza that I order once per month. Decidedly, put in
that perspective, my return on investment is well
worth it.”
Thank you, Marcia Glenn, owner of Glass Confusion,
for your continued support and offering one
more perspective on the value of being part of the
Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce.
Now, I’ll take what she’s having please…
COUPONS CAUSE CONFUSION ON DISCOUNT SITES
Dissect Deals Before Buying
Lake Oswego, Ore.
Daily deals on coupon marketing
websites—like Groupon and Living
Social—may seem tempting,
but be wary: Not all discounts are
delivered as advertised. While the
vast majority of coupon transactions
connect reliable businesses
with satisfied customers, Better
Business Bureau warns that some
companies don’t keep their end of
The Lincoln City Chamber of
Commerce is pleased to announce
the addition of our long-awaited
and brand new office manager,
Linda (NONNI) Augustine, who
joined our staff on August 1.
“I’m Nonni, the new office manager
for the Lincoln City Chamber
of Commerce, very recently relocated
from Portland. My background
includes corporate training
and retail hardware, with a very
solid career in the printing industry
as well. I believe that old adage
‘nothing happens unless something
is sold’ and, therefore, think the
Meet Nonni…
good health of our local economy
is of paramount importance. I am
so pleased to work on its behalf. I
have a lot of getting acquainted to
do and look forward to meeting
you all.
“My father bought a hardware
store when I was seven years old
and allowed me to earn my keep by
dusting shelves for a nickel an hour.
(I made a lot of money, too.) When
other teens were getting summer
jobs at the pool, my father insisted
I work at the store, saying, “Why
would I pay someone else to do
what you can do I want to keep
the bargain. “Coupon marketing
sites offer great incentives for consumers
and new opportunities for
local businesses,” said Robert W.G.
Andrew, CEO of BBB serving
Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington.
“However, undisclosed restrictions
and expirations can leave
consumers feeling empty-handed.”
To get the best deal possible, BBB
suggests the following considerations:
Quality: Check out the company
before buying their coupons
or Internet specials. Read customer
reviews online and visit bbb.org.
Cost: Take a moment to inspect
the company’s website and regular
pricing to see if the discount is really
a deal. Timing: Some coupons
can only be used on certain days or
times. Review offers for expiration
dates and fine print. All restrictions
should be specified in the deal, according
to BBB’s Code of Advertising.
Convenience: Make sure the
coupon is easy to redeem. Find out
where the company is located and
its hours of operation. Usability: To
avoid waitlists and long lines, it’s
best to sign up or schedule services
as soon as possible. When redeeming
services, be prepared to provide
proof of purchase or a confirmation
code.
as much money in the family as I
can.” I got a very good grounding
in business fundamentals and an
unparalleled respect for the power
of good customer service from my
dad.
“I have been attracted to the
ocean from the first moment I saw
it and knew that I wanted to live on
the coast. Although jobs were more
plentiful in Portland and that’s
where my little family settled, I
always expected to wind up on the
coast and now—here I am. I was
attracted to Lincoln City because
it appeared to be making progressive
strides every time I would visit
the coast. Some communities have
remained the same for many years,
but not LC. I also appreciated the
respect for the natural resources exhibited
by local residents.”
We’re delighted to have Nonni
aboard. No doubt, you will meet
and get to know her around town
Standards Changing For
Fluorescent Lighting
(Information furnished by Pacific Power, August 1, 2011)
New national efficacy standards for the manufacture of fluorescent
lamps will take effect next July, and now may be an excellent time for
businesses to upgrade their fluorescent lamps and ballasts while there are
still incentives. The Energy Trust of Oregon provides cash incentives to
Pacific Power customers for these types of upgrades, among others.
New federal standards have been enacted that will put an end to the
manufacture of T12 lamps and magnetic ballasts by July 2012, making
T8 lamps and electronic ballasts the new standard. The newer technology
produces better light with less heat, and requires little to no maintenance
for up to 20,000 hours of operation. The new standards will help produce
continued energy savings and reduce controllable operating costs without
compromising lighting quality.
In Oregon, Energy Trust of Oregon, Inc. offers incentives to Pacific
Power customers. Businesses that convert now can take advantage of both
the new technology and a bonus incentive. At some point the lower efficiency
products will no longer be available in the marketplace, affecting
supply and demand through 2012. Once T8s are standard practice, financial
incentive may no longer be available.
Take advantage of current incentives
Energy Trust offers incentives from $10 to $42 per fixture on upgrades
from T12s to T8 lamps with electronic ballasts. For a limited time, a bonus
incentive of $5 per fixture will be added to these standard incentives. Businesses
that convert before November 1, 2011, can tap into these additional
funds and manage their upgrade on a schedule they control.
Leisure and Hospitality Industry Trends
Oregon Labor Trends – June
2011, says average employment
in Oregon’s leisure and hospitality
industry was over 170,000 in 2010
and made up nearly 11 percent of
the state’s covered employment.
Payroll for Oregon’s leisure and
hospitality industry in 2010 was
nearly $2.8 billion.
Food service makes up the largest
segment of leisure and hospitality
in Oregon with over 120,000
jobs and 70 percent of the industry’s
employment. The accommodations
sector makes up 15% of
Oregon’s leisure employment with
nearly 25,000 jobs.
Leisure and hospitality employment
in Oregon reached its peak in
August 2008 with 181,700 people
employed. From that peak to the
most recent low in February 2010,
leisure employment lost more than
28,000 jobs, a 16 percent decline in
18 months. In 2010, Oregon average
employment in leisure and hospitality
was the lowest it has been
in the last five years. However, the
growth in seasonal jobs in 2010
was much greater than in 2009
when the seasonal drop from the
August summer high employment
was just under 13,000 jobs.
Tourism thrives in the summer
like many of Oregon’s other tourism
businesses, about 80 to 85 percent
of the resort’s business occurs
between Memorial Day and Labor
Day. The Oregon weather is more
This Weeks Business Tip is: Prepare to Make Sacrifices. Starting
a business is hard work, but after you open your doors, your work
have to make sacrifices, such as spending less time with family
and friends in order to be successful.
