A message from A. Leroy Parks . . .
At the time that you receive this E-Newsletter we will be well into our 3 rd
week of school, and I can’t begin to express to you how exciting it is to have
the school up and alive again after a long hot summer! I can tell that the
students have had a summer full of fun and also of relaxation and are focused
and ready to get down to the business of growing their minds to LEARN! The
staff had a great week of preparation prior to the first week of school, and I
can assure you they are ready to challenge your students to grow, learn and
reflect themselves on their instructional practices, which is a focus of our staff
development process this school year. We begin this school year with high
expectations of ourselves so we can push your student to excel in the classroom,
and we have built a foundation of support for your students so they can
be successful.
I want to personally thank all of the parents who attended our Open House
on Thursday August 26 th and our first annual, Buffalo Nation Celebration – Fall
Sports Kickoff on Saturday August 28 th . Open House was an informal meet
and greet that allowed parents and teachers an opportunity to fellowship in a
relaxed format. When we surveyed parents, our attempt at having a timed
schedule in the past was not well received. The past two years process of
having the informal meet and greet, seemed less stressful, and I know that I
saw several more smiles from parents! I will again put out a survey to ask
parents that attended if you liked the process and also seek feedback for improvements
as we plan for next year.
Our first Buffalo Nation Celebration was pretty well attended for a first try
at it, and we have already booked Chris Cakes to serve pancakes again for us
next year! We had approximately 265 in attendance for this year and we will
be looking to double that for next year. The pancake feed was utilized as a
fundraiser for all of our fall sports programs. The proceeds will be used to
support the programs that participated, as we continue to experience budget
challenges and reductions in school funding. Perhaps you participated and ate
At Southeast High School FAILURE is not an option! We will continue to utilize our Academics First Policy which
is designed to put the emphasis on academic achievement so that our students learn the importance of taking care of
their business in the classroom. As a reminder, the list is active from Monday to Monday and if a student’s name
appears on the list they are not permitted to participate or attend as a spectator, any extra-curricular activities that are
in session for that week. Examples of extra-curricular activities include, but are not limited to, all athletic contests,
Staff appreciation: a simple way to be
involved
The Southeast Teacher Appreciation Committee shows its support for our
cost of dinners, paper goods, etc.
· sending treats on designated days
· helping set up, serve, and clean up
For the past sixteen years, Wendy’s Restaurants have teamed up with the
Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee to create the Wendy’s High School
Heisman Award. The award honors both male and female high school students
who excel in academics, athletics and student leadership.
Applicant criteria include both male and female student athletes who exhibit
excellence in the classroom, on the playing field, and within their communities.
Eligibility for application is limited exclusively to men and women
whose senior year of high school is the 2010–2011 academic year, who have
at least a “B” grade average, and participate in at least one of 27 sports.
They are looking for all student athletes who work hard, are dedicated, and
have become role models for underclassmen.
To apply, please visit www.wendyshighschoolheisman.com. The deadline
to apply is October 3, 2010. For more information, please contact Amy Alvarez
in the CCC at aalvarez@usd259.net.
In a joint partnership with Wichita
State University, Southeast has the
opportunity to have four cooperative
education students. These students
will be working throughout the building
assisting both teachers and students.
Please help us welcome Katie
Flaming, Kerry Fryhover, Amy Haight
and Michelle McNabb.
Have your student listen for announcements
as we begin both our
AVID and school wide tutoring program.
Tutors will be available before
school, after school and during lunch.
The tutors are college students who
have received additional training in the
AVID tutorial process. Please welcome
placed on the list when they receive two or more Failing grades or F’s in any of their classes. Teachers are required
to post their grades by the end of the day on Thursday’s. The list is then compiled on Friday and distributed to staff
for implementation on the following Monday. A student need ask their administrator, counselor, or their Advocacy
teacher if they are on the list, as we do not post this list publically anywhere in the building for confidentiality reasons.
I will provide monthly data on the Academics First list via this e-newsletter. The Academics First list will begin
with the first distribution list on Monday September 13, 2010.
The Southeast faculty and staff will again work in the collaborative process to increase the professional dialogue
and discussion to aid in increasing student achievement at SEHS. We commonly refer to the process as Professional
Learning Communities or PLC’s. PLC’s allow each department time to meet and discuss more in depth a guaranteed
and viable curriculum for the benefit of our students. We will use the time to focus more on how our own student data
can help drive our instruction so that we can see the results in our student’s achievement. We started PLC’s on
Wednesday August 25 and will continue the process throughout the remainder of the year. This process does have an
impact on the daily schedule on Wednesday’s, so we have a late start to the normal school day. On Wednesdays we
will start classes at 8:20 a.m. Students that ride buses will experience no change in their routes or schedules and will
arrive as they do currently. Students are supervised during PLC meetings in the building. Because students do arrive
at a normal time and we start our school day later on Wednesday’s, students are required to enter the building as they
do on a regularly scheduled start. Students are NOT ALLOWED to walk to the local area businesses, or visit Curtis
Middle School, particularly if they ride a bus to school. School administration and security will be monitoring the
parking lot and directing students to enter the building. Please encourage your student to not walk to QuickTrip,
Dillons or Walgreens to get snacks or beverages before school on late start days. I thank you in advance for your
support.
I look forward to meeting as many parents and families as possible as I try to make myself as accessible as
possible to better serve you. It is my belief that parents send their very best to our school each and every day with the
hopes their student will be challenged academically and to learn. It is then our responsibility as educators to ensure it
happens to the best of our ability, on a daily basis. I have challenged myself and our staff with the task of building
Relational Capacity with our students and parents of Southeast, to better meet the needs of our students. Relational
Capacity is better defined as the depth that you can go with someone, and the width (topics of conversation that I can
cover with said person) and the value that I can add. Relational Capacity then is actually the capacity within a
relationship to withstand the struggles and issues of life. You have to have Relational Capacity with someone, in
order to give them feedback
The mission of Wichita Southeast is to be a professional learning community that provides students with the
knowledge and skills to be productive in our society.
I am proud to be the principal of the school that launched me into my professional life and career choice, many
years ago. I look forward to working with all parents, students and staff to make this year a positive experience for
everyone. Please stay involved in the education of your child and involved in the school.
Respectfully,
A. Leroy Parks, Jr.
